OK, this web site sucks... I can not find the booze order section. Yes, there is wine, but where is the booze?? I want to order a bottle or two, not wine. I don't want a cocktail card, I want bottles!
I can't find it anywhere, does HAL not allow preorder to the room????
Someone... please take me there..................

Sheila
The form has changed since I booked with them in 2005. hmm.... Of course, I contacted my TA to book the stuff, rather than fill out a form and fax it. I will see what I can find out.

Sheila, I found the following:
http://www.hollandamerica.com/cruise-vacation-planning/ShipboardLife.action?contentMenu=Onboard%20Policies&contentSubMenu=Bringing%20Alcoholic%20Beverages%20Onboard
"Room Service offers reduced-price stateroom beverage packages for in-stateroom consumption of alcoholic beverages."

I'll have to call.
My wine days are over. DH still enjoys, but I lost my taste after Europe.(maybe I need to switch to a nice dry red rather than all the white). I still enjoy a G&T tho. Can't believe that they won't allow you to preorder alcohol to room. Maybe will just have to order the wine packages for the old boy, and I'll have to order room service (note to self....better rob a bank !!)
Thanks folks.

| You don't have to order it in advance -- at least this was our experience when we sailed on the Noordam in March. We were able to order the bottles we wanted from any bar (we ordered from the Ocean Bar). Bear in mind that if you order it while you're still in port (which is what we did) you pay NY taxes -- wait til you're out to sea, and it's cheaper! If you don't feel comfortable doing that (or they've changed their policy since we sailed) then just send an e-mail ("contact us") and tell them what you want -- they'll refer you to the right department.

I like that... will do.
If you buy a "soda card", does that apply to room service too? Seems like such a pain to ask for tonic and then get a glass at a time???

Can't answer your question about the soda card -- if I were you I'd skip the soda card, bring a six pack of tonic, and grab a bowl of limes at a bar on your way to your stateroom! Of course, I'd give the bartender a buck or two for the limes!

see... great info here!!
Thanks, now will research where to buy in Venice.
Thanks JC, I saw your post over there....
So I'm reading: I can purchase a bottle of Gin / Vodka at the bar, have delivered to my room (they don't keep), and just order tonic or bring tonic onboard daily.
The only booze they keep is the duty free (they actually did that to us once... but only once )
Maybe once you put your booking number into HAL site, they give you a different order sheet??
Think I will bring vino onboard from there. That way DH gets a change of selections etc. What til Pearl hits Greece (she loves Greek wine) OPA!!

I'm glad you said the "first" glass... cause it might not be pretty by the end of the bottle!

WE were able to order bottles of liquor at the bar on the Noordam for consumption in our cabin -- but I can't guarantee that's how every ship works, so probably better to pre-order... Prices were reasonable ($40 for a bottle of Dewars, $55 for a bottle of Amaretto di Soronno).
Yes, I seem to remember that once you plug in your booking number there was a different order sheet. If that doesn't work, I'd e-mail HAL directly.
You do have to pay corkage fee for the wine, if I'm not mistaken.
Enjoy!

The corkage fee depends on your bar server. On our HAL cruise, the bar server is responsible for selling you wine and drinks, unlike RCI where your waiter takes care of wine. Anyway, I digress, on our cruise we started in Rio de Janeiro after the ship had just done a 20 day transatlantic, and the previous passengers severely attacked the wine list. First night we made a reservation at the Pinnacle (first night was only a surcharge of $10 instead of $20, and I don't know if this is still the policy) we went to pre-order wine. At the tastings bar near the Pinnacle Grill, so I am looking at the list and I order a Silver Oak Cab and a Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio and a bottle of Chardonnay. I was very pleased at the reasonable price on the Silver Oak, so at dinner after he poured the first round, I knew that we would have no problem killing another bottle of it, so I asked for a second bottle. That was the last bottle! So, I ask for the list (there were 6 of us just so you don't think I am a complete lush!), and there was a nice Super Tuscan on the list and I said we would like this bottle, and the reply was we are out of that too. So I picked a Merlot, again nope all gone. Frustrated, I said, can you please bring me something similar. They brought a Spanish Rioja that is about a $10 bottle in the grocery store. It was fine. So, the next night we went to the main dining room and met our bar server, who was going to be leaving the ship in a couple of weeks later in Valparaiso and heading home at the end of his contract. So, I said what red wine do you have, he handed me the list. So, I start down the list, nope, nope, nope, nope, I finally said, I liked the Silver Oak Cab, just bring a bottle of what you have that might be close. So, we got a collection of odd wines the next two nights until we reached Montevideo where they restocked the ship. I guess they don't restock in Brazil... Anyway, by the time they had restocked, we had a chance to start of daily port shopping task of finding interesting South American Wines. We would usually order a bottle and bring a couple of prizes liberated from the shops in port. The wine guy didn't charge us a single corkage fee the entire 16 day cruise. I think he appreciated that we let him off the hook unlike our obnoxious table neighbors from LA that were loud, rude and the guy looked like Kramer and wore NBC network clothing about 1/2 the time. It was so tempting when we ended up in the hotels across the room from him in Santiago, Lima and Cuzco for the 5 nights after the cruise, and I know he booked all 6 of his group with HAL at $1900 per person, and I spent about $3000 total for 4 of us, and had the same experience except he road on a HAL bus and I took a cab.
And Sheila you are always welcome!

| The running out of wine happened last year on the Grand. We were floored that a ship that size, a cruise that long couldn't handle all the wino's onboard. I thought funny in the beginning but as the days grew and the wine dried up, I thought it was lacking big time in service. Poor poor planning on someone's part. You just don't invite people to dinner then run out of food and drink. Bad manners... and when you are paying big bucks, it doesn't sit well.

According to Maritime law, running out of wine is a legitimate reason for mutiny.

We had what we called "The incredible shrinking wine list" on the The first NCL Jewel transatlantic. . All the decent wines under $40 gone by day 5. Everyday they printed a new list. We had a dinner for 22 one night and I tried to order wine for the table. After I went 0 for 5 in trying to select a wine they were not out of. The HD was so embarrassed he just provided selection 6 free for everyone.
I have to admit if was really funny. The whole table cheering me on to go 0 for 6. A perfect example of lemonade

At least you saw the humor in it and had some fun.

On the Holland America websight, I went to the tab 'For Booked Guests', selected 'Onboard Gifts', then the sign-in page came up. Sign in with your Holland America screen name and password, add your reservation to the screen, then select your reservation, and click 'Choose Gifts', then 'Spirits & Liquor'. This wasn't working over the weekend, but, it seems to be working now. Best of luck to you.
Happy Sailing

HAL website wins hands down the worst cruise site of the planet!!
I registered, did all the log in, checked booked guest went to gifts.... and all I can do is print out a selection form. I'm ok with that, but.... there is no booze on this form. It has wine, spa, robes, renewals etc etc... but SHOW ME THE BOOZE???????????
I hope when it comes time to check in online, it is a much improved site!!
Maybe I should email them a little reminder!

Hummm, I wonder if it shows me the liquor because I've already checked-in online? Weird. You are right, it is a pretty lousy website. Good luck, I hope you get things worked out. BTW, I'll be smuggling on this trip.

I'm on the Oosterdam at the beginning of November. How about you?? All cruises are good in my mind, but, I'm particularly at home on Holland America. How long do you have to go before you sail??Last edited on Tue Aug 19th, 2008 12:37 am by Jetlagged

This is my first HAL, always wanted to do one. I would have chosen a newer ship, but we liked this Europe route.
First all round... never booked a gaurantee, and never on HAL.

I'm sure that you'll love it - the smaller ships are very nice IMHO. Also, my experience has been good with the guarantee cabins & Holland America. Best of luck to you. :-)
