Maybe ......Costa.

Sheila, I would do a lot of homework before booking Costa. If you really take a look around the different boards, this line gets a lot of negative reviews. The ship that is really shaping up nicely is the Solstice from Celebrity.

Gordon, I've sailed this itinerary 3 times in the last 2 years, have another one booked for next year, and own a timeshare in Puerto Vallarta, so I might be able to help. What kinds of things do you like to do?

I wonder. If you bought a power scooter, do you think you'd fit right in? :big grin:

Tim, I will have to look at the ships shore excursions and get back with you. I think that in Cabo we want to do some type of whale watching excursion. Not sure about the other two islands.

Post what you find. I've wanted to do a Mexican Riv cruise. Do you wear thin on "all Mexico" though? And were the seas any rougher than elsewhere? Weather in Feb-May?
Yes, the Soltice is looking very good. So were the prices.

There are also several non-ship tour companies that I am familiar and comfortable with including, but not limited to, zip lining, horseback riding on the beach, city tours, party boats, etc.

In Mazatlan you MUST go to Tony's on the beach for lunch....make sure you get the right one though..there is a Tony's you pass on the way to Tonys on the Beach and some taxis try to take you to the first one....There are 2 things you have to order...the Lobster and Shrimp platter for 2 and the Steak Mocahete....we had both of these between 3 of us and were stuffed and had leftovers..My wife and I agreed it was the BEST food we have ever eaten in Mexico..if you go to the Mex Riv board on CC and search Tonys on the beach you will see much info on it...when you get out of taxi it looks like an abandoned office building but walk thru the passageway and go all the way to the back to the beach and there it is...the staff are awesome, accomidating and act like you are their old friends as soon as you arrive and NOT just to try to sell you something, they really want you to eat and enjoy!

All that food, 3 beers, a couple of maggies and total damages was around $75 US  oh and with the Loster platter you get tortilla soup or salad..get the tortilla soup...it is GREAT!

Weather is fine  Feb-March.....Winter is only about from mid Dec to mid Jan in Mex Riv....and even then the highs are in the 70's usually...we had a few chilly days when it was overcast and the  windblew but other than that is was fine....in fact my face got one hell of a sunburn...

Also Gordon, a corner aft cabin is a suite right?  I was right next to one on deck 7 and we opened the divider door as the people in  it were in our roll call group..AWESOME wrap around and  HUGE deck..nice teak dining table on deck thats great for room service breakfast....the room service menus are better than ANY I've seen....Also if that class of suite qualifies to use the Neptune lounge you should take advantage of that too..It is like a private suites only lounge with a private concierge to book all your meals, shore excursions and basicly kiss your ass while onboard and there are alway LOTS of goodies to eat and cappichino (I think) and coffee available in the  Neptune lounge all the time....

only problem for  you will be it is on deck 7 midships...I passed by many times and looked at the goodies thru the window..also I believe the Neptune lounge will deliver free appitezers to your suite if you want to have a sail away party or whatever...the suite next to us had like 10 large platters delivered for our sailaway in San Diego......cheeses, crackers, salmon, all kinds of goodies and I can attest they were quite tasty

Thanks for the info Mike. In Matatlan we will hit Tony's. Sounds like my kind of place.

We do have one of the corner suites and I have seen photos of the balcony. It is huge which I like. I enjoyed those corner aft suites on Carnival's Spirit class ships and I know that the Vista class is a knock off of those. Sounds like a sail away party it is. Thanks for the info. Just about six weeks to go and we hit San Diego. I have not been there in about twenty years.

I've never been to San Diego. My sister will be there in two weeks, she loves it. It's a must on our to do list....
Is it a nice cruise port area?
If you were going to do a Mex Riviera would you do it out of San Diego or elsewhere?

LOTS of changes in downtown SD in the last 20 years..where are you staying? The Holiday INN is RIGHT across the street from the cruise terminal on the waterfront and easy access to lots of stuff downtown

I wouldnt base my cruise choice on embarkation port but that being said, San Diego is an AWESOME city....excluding Hawaii ,prolly the best weather in the US, I lived in SD for a few years and still love going back and it is  even better now than when I lived there!

And yes Sheila the embarkation area is nice...right downtown and 5 min from airport!

That is where we are staying. I had read many comments over on CC about the HI and it's location. When I was first booking a room nothing was available so we booked the Westin just up the street but I kept checking back and finally a room opened up. We are supposed to overlooking the port.

yes it overlooks the maritime museum, the Star of India an old sailing ship, and is literally straight across the street from the ships dock....

Also right across the street is a seafood restarant called Anthony's..there are 3 of em in SD..a VERY nice restarant built out over the water with great views as well!

Thanks Mike. Just looked at the menu for Anthony's. Looks very good.

I just found this thread over on the CC West Coast board. Love the views from the hotel room.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=699785

I wonder if you could follow up with the cruise line prior to cruising to see about getting some trays delivered to the cabin for a sail away? I see what you mean about trays being delivered for a sail away. There are some photos here showing that.

I have no idea of who these folks are in the photos. I just found them using Google.

I doubt you could set it up in advance but if you go right to Neptunes lounge after boarding your concierge will be there and will set ip up for you...

They are REALLY hardcore about NOT letting you to your room till they are ALL ready...I had to lug around my carryon with 7 bottles of wine till rooms were opened...they did try to have me drop my stuff at the Neptune lounge cause they assumed I was in a suite cause deck 7 is almost all suites..thats how I saw the concierge waiting there as I walked by...

Like most cruise lines they DON'T tell you the main dining room is open for lunch but they are...we just went there and had lunch and had a couple of after lunch drinks there while we waited..

Not all rooms at HI face the waterfront...a 20 spot might help you get one if they say they don't have any available!

Also there is a large full service grocery store right downtown for your wine or other purchases...its called Ralphs and its right on Horton Plaza downtown..about a 4 minute cab ride from your hotel...we took a cab right from the airport to Ralphs and had him wait and then right to the pier!:drink:

I'm going to call the HI a couple of days prior as my reservation is for a bayview room. Our flight arrives just before 1:00 in the afternoon and we are going to rent a car and head straight over to the hotel so I am in hopes that we have no problems with getting the room of choice.

I don't know if you need a car due to some other plans but if you are flying in the day before and not going far from your hotel I wouldn't even  bother with a car..airport is LITERALLY just a few minutes from downtown and your hotel..$10 cab ride at the most...but like all California cities if you're going very far you will need a car....

Actually we are coming in two days ahead of time and not sure what we are going to do so we decided to rent a car and take off on Friday and drive around. We will have Thursday afternoon and evening to spend around hotel area.
