Seattle, April 12, 2007 – On behalf of the crew of the ms Noordam, Captain Hans Mateboer accepts the Navy League of the United States, New York Council AMVER Award Medal for the ship’s dramatic rescue of 22 people on June 6, 2006, in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece. The individuals, believed to be refugees from a number of countries, had been sailing on a boat which had capsized. One fast rescue boat and two tenders were lowered and the 22 people, all wearing life jackets, were brought aboard within two hours and 15 minutes. Following the rescue, the officers and crew of the Noordam also received accolades from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres.
