| I really would LOVE to sail on a Disney ship, but I would like to know why they are soooooo expensive? I guess anything Disney is though. Is a three or four day, steerage cabin worth it? We have never been on a short cruise and I'm afraid it won't be worth it. Maybe a 3 day and a few days at a Disney resort?? That's what I'm leaning towards. HELP!

| Like you said, anything with the name Disney is expensive. Guess the rat has expensive taste in cheese. I've never heard anything but good reports about them, though. Of course, their kids program is the best. Last edited on Sun Sep 3rd, 2006 12:03 pm by nhrich

Disney puts out an excellent product. I think the cost is directly supply and demand related. Two ships lots of people, great product. They also price on a tier system, meaning the longer you wait the more you will pay. I think (and MrPete might back me up on this) Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island is worth the price of admission alone. The ships are beautiful and essentially identical, some décor and naming differences. So you won’t miss out by doing one or the other. We did a 7 night Eastern and loved it. 2 sea days to get you oriented and then the island stops. Another sea day and then CC at the end. We would have preferred CC at the beginning, but beggars can’t be choosers. So if you can do it, go for it. I would do the 4 nighter over the 3 nighter, but that’s just me. You leave on a Sunday and return Thursday. Steerage could be worth it. If you have young children you may want the balcony to be able to go out there to read while naps or early bedtimes. Night life is not as great as on other ships since there is such a child contingent and parents are in bed or their rooms earlier with the kids. The clubs were pretty fun, but didn’t get to experience then sans child too much. The rest was great. The rotational dining was a lot of fun and a great experience.
So go for it and let us know what you choose.

YES! Paul is right. Castaway Cay happens to be my favorite place on Earth!
My recommendation is for EVERYONE to try it once. It's well worth the experience. And I would spend the few extra bucks for the balcony, but only if you can swing it. It will not make or break the cruise.
We did the land/sea thing twice; nice, but I didn't like worrying about my meals. I probably would have preferred a 7 day cruise.
But ultimately, it's a cruise with a twist. A Disney twist!

I saw a segment on The Travel Channel about Disney's Castaway Cay. Wow, talk about doing something right. No tenders, they built their own piers so you just walk off the ship. They even have a little train to take you to the other spots. And employees that live on the island all the time, just to keep everything ready. Really nice...

It is really nice. Walk right on and off whenever you want. The beach is walkable, but the tram back is great. Island is spotless and well cared for. It really is a great place. Separate adult only section and teens have their own area too.

There ae many things about Disney that is above and upon.
The sodas are free, Palo is not as expensive as other surcharge places, rotational dining, the ice cream is great, the beer tasting, wine tasting and the martini flights are great.
I really do not think the cruises are worth the price but I do love Disney. Castaway Cay is awesome.
Another thing Disney is great about is keep the kids out of the adult areas.
I agree with the comment it is about supply and demand.

Since my DH and I are child-free, we have never even considered Disney for obvious reasons. But I am interested in your comment about the kids being kept out of the adult areas. What kind of adult venues are there on a Disney ship?
Coke's used to be free on RCCL/Princess years ago, but not any more.

Nipper, you and DH could join hubby and me on the Magic on 12/6?! Find out for yourself. A couple of years ago Disney was voted the best adults-only experience. Go figure! Of course there's no casino and limited nightlife, but as a Disney nut I think I'll LOVE the shows. The Pirate Deck Party and fireworks sound awesome, too!

So, tell me about the adult-only venue's. We're not gamblers, so we're never in the casino anyway.......

I'll bring a deck of cards and we can play penny gin rummy.
Adults-only starts with our balcony cabin. There's also the spa, adults-only pool (http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/dcl/en_US/onboard/activities/detail?name=QuietCoveAdultPoolDetailPage), and Palo (the specialty restaurant).
Of course, I've not been on DCL yet, so maybe someone else will chime in here?

Our last cruise on Disney was just Jeff and myself. We booked it because they do offer a lot of adult oriented things to do. When we cruise with the children we were limited on what we could and could not do. Well they are a bit older now and we are not as limited.
They have a nice Spa and you must be 18 to go there. I think they offer a teen time in the spa now though. Otherwise you do not see children in there or they are not there long. Also the Adult Pool area is strictly for adults. Now it has been a few years since we were on Disney but then when a child or a group of children would come in or sit down they were told to leave immediately. We knew the bartender too well there by the end of the cruise. He would see us come out of the spa all relaxed and have a Rum Runner on the rocks waiting on us. That is one of the only fruity drinks I like.
Palo is an adult themed Italian surcharge restaruant. You must be 18 to eat there. It is very nice. They offer bunch and dinner. I only had one problem there once. You can walk on the outside of the area and one child kept on banging on the glass yelling mommy. You could tell which parents belonged to that child. They never got up but let CM's handle the situation. It was handled quickly and very respectfully.
They offer wine tasting, beer tastings and martini flights. Back when we did this the martini tasting was in small martini glasses, placed on a mat in a specific order and then the bartender would walk you thru the flight. Funny thing is you do not drink they in the order they are on the mat. Go figure.
They offer various other things to do that are stated Adult Only.

I would love to go again but want to do one of the new ships. I always go in hurricane season. I love the temps during H season and I love the fact the kids are not as plentiful.
