I'll be doing a review, but it probably won't be until the weekend when I have some time.

We enjoyed it, but I know a lot of people who wouldn't.  If you don't mind announcements in five languages, and understand (and can accept) differences between European & U.S. cultures, then Costa could be for you.  If not, you're setting yourself up for a cruise that you won't be happy with.

I will say that the food was much better than I expected.  When I got on the scale when we got home last night, it said "Get off me...you're hurting me".  Well, not really, but 2 days after the cruise I was still up 6 pounds.  My normal is 3-4 pounds, and that's the day we get off the ship.

What about smoking in the dining room?

Not allowed (and same in the theater).  I really didn't find smoke to be a problem anywhere on the ship, and even with what I'd say was 60% Europeans on the ship, I didn't notice any more people smoking than on any other cruise.

That's good to know Rich. Because I actually sent to Costa for a brochure & we are interested.
But, I was looking over at CC (I know, big mistake :shoot me: ) and there are lots of threads about the smoking on the ship. I actually thought they allowed smoking in the dining room, so I am glad to hear they do not.
What did you think about the food quality, as opposed to mass-market lines like RCCL/Princess?

Nipper, I honestly don't get the anti-Costa bias on CC. Maybe I like Costa just because I've lived in Europe and happen to think Europeans are a lot of fun?

Buffet wasn't that great, but the dining room food was very good...better than the ones that you mentioned.  Costa actually is a mass-market line, at least in Europe.  They're supposedly the 5th largest cruise line in the world, and largest in Europe.  That's what draws the European passengers to Costa.

I was in line at the purser's desk at one point, and a European passenger tried to cut in front of me.  I didn't say anything, but the person at the desk had seen it and made her go to the end of the line.

I've never seen more pool chair hogs in my life, but that's probably about the worst thing I could say.

 Check these two stories out. Maybe it'll explain the European pool chair hog phenomenon. http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=2430, http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=2437.

Our first cruise was on Costa and we absolutely loved it! - it was what actually got us hooked on cruising.

That being said, the one and only time I encountered rudeness was on this particular ship. Perhaps it was due to the amount of  passengers that were from the other side of the pond, I don't know.

I must say though, that all of our subsequent cruises had more passengers from North America and we never had a problem.

I'm sure every country has it's share of dicks. However I've always found the US people very nice, never rude and always look forward to going "State-side" whenever we can.

And no, I'm not bag licking anyone here. It is my true opinion, for what it's worth.:smiley1:

Rich, I'm pretty sure Costa isn't for me, but I look forward to reading your review. Especially about the food and the similarities to and differences from the lines on which I HAVE cruised.

This is a very interesting message board about Costa. I have never been there. I am glad they don't allow smoking in the dining area. Who wants to eat and smell smoke? Even smokers don't like it. I know years a go people could smoke anywhere but now, in many places, it is against the law even in the USA. I am sure it is like that in Europe.

OK I know this is a wheel chair but it comes close.      :gramps:Chair Hogs  That was funny. People have no regard for others. And cutting in line, what's up with that? People would get annoyed if it were done to them. That is why we have to watch out for ourselves.

I am glad you had a good time on your cruise. I have never taken a cruise in Europe. I would like to but the air fare is so high. Maybe one day. Have fun on your next cruise.

 Happy sailing, LFSC :capt:

So Rich, after seeing your avatar, what kind of beer do they have at the bars?
