Anyone here have any experience on Costa? I got 2 brochures from them a few weeks ago that look really nice.
The only drawback (for me) is that I heard that the dining rooms have a smoking section. I don't smoke and it has always been my bad luck to get seated one table away from the smoking sections in places that allow smoking in their dining rooms.
Of course, my preference would be a totally non-smoking dining room. I was just wondering if the smoke was a problem throughout the ship?

I don't know about the smoking, but for smoke free that would be Oceania.
I have researched these ships, they look appealing to me, mainly due to the food served ( I love Italian). I think they may be comparable to RCCL. And from what I understand, they are merging into the market slowly and steadily. Which is a pleasant surprise. I'm a bit tired of one corporation having the market. I know that they are broken down into their own little "meag" companies, but I'd like to see some really different stuff out there happening.
There must be a market for the wierd and whacky?

| From what I have heard and read, people either love them or hate them. There seems to be no middle ground. They are becoming more of a Carnival ship with a different funnel. The ships being built are either the Spirit or Conquest class and the interiors are designed by Jor Farcus who does the Carnival fleet. I have no desire to cruise with Costa due to the amount of smoke that you read about and the annoucements being in five languages.

Didn't know that about the announcements...... nothing worse than all that blaring non stop during the day at a foreign land resort. the only time it ends is 5pm to restart for the nightly shows!!!!!!!
I'm not particular about Carnival, so it that's the way it leans~~~~
We need people to post reviews.

Hurry! Until June 30, 2006, Kids cruise free* on the stunning Costa Magica and beautiful Costa Mediterranea in the Caribbean. Imagine white-sand beaches, great shopping, historical sites and a fun-filled kids program that ensures a little extra down time for Mom and Dad.
Now, that's amore.
Thought of Folgy when I found this on their web site.

| Costa usually has cheap prices in the Caribbean but I still cannot get myself to try them. Maybe one day. I think that they should offer some shorter cruises. That would entice me to book. If I didn't like them then I would not have to spend a full week on board.

I know this is painfully outdated now.. but since I've only arrived here I couldn't answer any sooner. My first cruise was on Costa and while my husband and I enjoyed it, we weren't blown away by anything. Not the service, decor, entertainment or food. The endless announcements in 5 or 6 languages, and the forced geniality was rather grating by the end of the week. They even called bingo in multiple languages. Despite all of that we enjoyed cruising this just wasn't the line for us. I was surprised how abused the ship appeared, since it was basically a new ship at that time, private areas were well maintained, but an amazing amount of damage all over the ship in the public areas.Costa frequently runs the kids sail free and room upgrades. I seem to get those offers every couple of months.

That's funny. I thought you wrote "kids run free on Costa."
Anyway, that's one of the things I did hear about Costa: unruly children.

Another reason why I wouldn't want to cruise with them. Granted, you might find unruly children on any of the mainstream lines, but with so many to choose from, I'm not willing to take a chance on this particular line.

I guess I will have to throw my hat in to the "not real interested" crowd as well. I have looked at them a bit, and to be perfectly honest; if I'm going to sail a Spirt or Conquest Class ship, I'm sticking with Carnival. At least I know what I can expect.

Ditto what oLEEander wrote.
We sailed on Costa Magica in March of 2006. While we were grateful to be cruising, the service, food and entertainment was lacking. Our room steward was awesome, but we felt so bad for the dining room team. It seemed they had too many table to serve and we didn't get that personal touch that we were used to with Carnival and RCCL. The menu in the dining room mirrored the food served in the buffet. So on nights that we didn't want to miss something by being at dinner for 2.5 hours, we would just eat on the Lido deck.
We'll stick to Carnival, their food, service and entertainment is always great for us. Plus we love to stay up late and have fun..

I am so glad to read these reviews!!!!! I had been thinking about checking out Costa, but I will rethink that now. THe announcements in 5-6 languages really would annoy me! I dislike all the announcements all day long already on most of the cruise ships.

Carnival has turned this line into nothing more than a Italian Carnival Cruise Line. It's really sad. I understand that at one time Costa really had a nice Italian feel and one really got to enjoy that but now the ships are a clone of Carnival with the same designer and one can only tell them apart by the funnels. If I want a true Europeon feel then I would go MSC.

| We were on Costa Mediterranean a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it! It was what got us hooked on cruising. While I don't know about European waters - no one smoked in the restaurants while this ship was in the Caribbean. (or the theaters etc - same as any other ship).

Our first cruise was on the Costa Atlantica in March 2005. We LOVED it! Of course, it didn't hurt any that our balcony guarantee turned out to be a panorama suite. Our butler was psychic, providing for any possible need. We really enjoyed the food, although I remember the lobster wasn't very good. The wine package was great <hic>, and I don't remember thinking that drinks were anything but reasonable. The interior design of the ship was a bit ecclectic (based on the films of Federico Fellini?!?), but we chalked that up to it having been designed for the European market. Since DH and I love languages and travel, we really appreciated the wide mix of peoples.
Some day DH and I will do that Greek Isles cruise we've been dreaming of, and we'll definitely consider Costa when we do.
