Costa Crociere’s new Asia operation is off to a slower than expected start due to a late marketing launch, however the ship is being well-received, Carnival Corp. & plc management said today.

Carnival had budgeted a third-quarter operating loss for Costa Crociere Asia but the loss was ‘a little bit higher’ than anticipated, Carnival cfo Gerry Cahill told analysts.
‘Passenger response to the ship is very, very good,’ according to Carnival vice chairman Howard Frank, who added that the challenges have been more related to marketing and distribution. The product was late to market due to delays in securing licenses to operate from China. That necessitated lower pricing.
Costa announced its Asia strategy in March, and the 1,000-passenger Costa Allegra began sailing from Shanghai in July.
The vessel is scheduled to redeploy to Hong Kong in November. Frank said the Shanghai itineraries are being re-evaluated.
Carnival will hold off on a second ship for the region until it has the program right. But, Frank added, ‘We’re very hopeful, very positive … We’re going to stick with it for awhile.’

I would think that the marketing strategy would have to be different in Asia than in the U.S. or Europe. They need to understand the culture of the people then use that in an effective marketing technique.

I think I had forgotten that Costa was owned by Carnival.

I would have thought the Asian market would be a big seller, though.
