"Many of us remember when taking a trip on a cruise ship was only for the wealthy. Because we do remember, it is hard to break stereotypes and change impressions. Obviously times have changed, and now those who can afford a modest vacation can manage to find a cruise that will fit their needs and means."

Cruising is the perfect way to enjoy the best times of your life. Seniors can enjoy lounging by the pool on a deck chair with a good book, or a game of cards. Or they can be as active as their hearts desire with excercise classes, dancing lessons, wine tastings, singles parties, and more.
When it comes to dining, guests can opt for a low-calorie lunch, pasta preparred at your table in the dining room or a cheeseburger and fries at the pool buffet. Dinners are five to seven course meals and often feature international specialties. Depending on the ship selected, passengers can dress formally or dine as casual as they want to be. Deciding what features are important to you is a priority: perhaps you are single and female and would like to dance before or after dinner; then you should consider ships that feature Gentleman Hosts. Gentleman Hosts are men over 50 who dance with the unescorted ladies. You may also be assigned to dining room tables with other single men & women traveling alone, and attend a variety of social functions aboard.
Medical Facility: Many seniors ask us "Is there a doctor on board". The answer to that is simple....yes. Though the following information is important and should be read by all passengers before booking a cruise, especially so if one has an existing condition.
Should a guest require medical attention while aboard a cruise ship there is an Infirmary staff available to assist 24 hours a day. The Infirmary is equipped to treat minor non-emergency matters. Physicians are available to render services at a customary fee. A charge for medical services will be billed to the guest's on board account and a receipt will be provided for the guest to submit to their insurance company upon return for possible reimbursement. The physicians on board are independent contractors and are entitled to render services at a customary fee which may vary from ship to ship based on the time of day. The basic fee does NOT include medication, tests or treatment.
Typical medical Infirmary hours for most cruise ships:
Infirmary Hours: 8:00am - 8:00pm
Doctor's Hours : 9:00am - 11:00am; 3:00pm - 6:00pm
Services Offered for Passengers with Special Needs: Accommodations for guests medical needs including oxygen and dialysis are available. A variety of equipment is also available onboard, such as shower stools, bed extensions, raised toilet seats and transfer benches Wheelchair accessible staterooms, & activities are aslo available.
Cruise lines that offer Gentleman Hosts are: - Crystal Cruises
- Cunard Cruise Line
- Seabourn Cruises
- Holland America Line
- Orient Lines

Senior Cruise Introduction:
Who says 55 is not fun anymore? They’re sadly mistaken. 55 is the best time of one’s life. It’s the age where you are not anymore burdened by school fees, meal planning, car payments, taking care of the baby and all those stuff you did when you were much younger and still struggling to do everything you want. By 55 you’re on the road to give much more meaning and more value to your existence.
More about Senior Cruises:
Cruising at the age of 55 and above also entails some good thought especially on the choice of cruise line. Cruising when you were much younger would be a little different when you are on a more mature age.
- For instance, food considerations should be thought of. Cruise activities are also somewhat different, more peaceful, calm and soothing. These are just a few of the deliberations you’ll be considering when traveling. Senior Cruises are cruises especially designed with the comfort and luxury travel of senior citizens in mind.
Whats Involved:
So what constitutes a perfect senior cruise? For starters, it should be comfortable and especially made for senior citizen cruisers, it should abound in activities that would foster happiness and fun targeted towards people in the senior age group. A good senior cruise should also have a handy medical team onboard to attend to cruisers who have medical problems; lastly the food and drinks onboard should also be sumptuous and first class without the added calories.
- Tip is to choose a small to medium cruise fleet as walking long distances may tire the seniors more.
Types of Cruise:
Senior Cruises can be classified into two types;
- There is the sedentary cruise where activities are more toned down and into a more calm and serene degree.
- There are also senior cruises that border on the upbeat where ballroom dancing sessions and fitness classes abound. You just have to take your pick as to which type of senior cruise is more suitable.
You always get a Discount!
What’s great about senior cruising too is that they are mostly discounted and most senior cruises offer tours around the world in first class pampering and comfort.
What Cruise Lines:
Some of the most prestigious cruise lines that offer true value senior cruises include Crystal Cruises, Cunard Cruises, Sea Bourn Cruises, SilverSea and Orient Lines.

I think it is nice they cater to seniors and I am one of them, but in most ways do not feel or act like a senior. I have never picked a cruise activity that was calming and soothing, that is for when I am ready for th rocking chair! Heck even my 77 year old Mom does not use a rocking chair and travels more than I do ( she is regional president of parents without partners) I still do amusement parks and roller coasters and all the fun stuff. "Sixty is the new Forty." Look around you; today's Seniors are more active than ever. And despite the continuing increase in the percentage of young couples and young families on cruise vacations, Seniors continue to represent a major cruise demographic. In fact, with the "boomers" advancing in age, a huge upswing is now underway. There are important factors that can sway a Senior to choose one cruise over another. We've identified several below and if a particular cruise claims them all, it's a shoo-in for our "Best Cruises for Seniors" list.
- Compelling Itinerary. While the Caribbean beaches remains a popular choice, Seniors lead the way to Alaska, Asia, Canada & New England, Europe and South America. Interesting, historical ports with breathtaking scenery top the list.
- Senior-Friendly. Cruise lines that have traditionally catered to the mature traveler have an advantage here. Seniors are a loyal bunch and appreciate a line whose service, onboard programs and refined shipboard ambiance reward them!
- Enrichment Programs. Step into any any shipboard culinary arts class, computer seminar, language lesson, guest speaker lecture, pottery-making class or Tango lesson...and look around - most attendees are probably Seniors!
- Small to Medium-size Ships. Seniors traveling with spouses or other Seniors often prefer smaller ships - and for two reasons: They don't need or use the highly-touted facilities of "mega-liners" (skating rinks, water slides, etc.) or they're not crazy about all the decks or the distances to travel.

Why you young whipper snapper, thank you for posting this info for us old folks.:angeldevil:
I've been reading about that discount for cruisers 55 and over, and can't get any real concrete info. Has anyone received this? If you don't mind me asking, how much was it? Is it just for the one pax that is 55 or can it be used for the couple in the same cabin, even if the other is not 55?

Information is a bit sketchy. A TA might be able to answer that question. I checked Celebrity just for an example and here's what they said on their website:
"There are special senior prices on selected sailings for guests who are ages 55 and over."
AARP (American Assn. of Retired Persons) offers some discounts to it's members on selected sailings as well. I saw one that was $100. Whether or not it applies to just the person over 55 or to everyone in the cabin is probably another can of worms, again determined by the cruise line.

Freighter Travel - - The Cheap Way for Seniors to Cruise the World
Freighter travel cruises are for romantic and adventurous travelers of any age
Traveling around the world on a tramp steamer is something most of us read about in books when we were teenagers. I always thought freighter travel was the kind of thing that raffish young men with no thought for the future did until they ended up looking like Humphrey Bogart -- before they were 25. Well, like a lot of things I thought when I was a teenager, I was wrong. You don't have to be young and feckless to enjoy freighter travel. Yes, nowadays they call the boats freighters rather than tramp steamers, but they are still an inexpensive and quite comfortable way to see the world. These aren't the rough and ready trips of old movies, but dress is casual and you have to make most of your own entertainment. Passage covers accommodation, meals and soft drinks but not alcohol and you'll probably have to do your own laundry and ironing.
