Well, I went to Circuit City tonight and bought a Fuji Finepix S700 -- it has a 10X zoom and 7.1 MP.  The price was right ($80 less than the Canon that I was thinking of buying).  Haven't taken it out of the box yet, so I can always return it without paying the restocking fee.  But I don't know how long I can resist.  I played with it in the store and it seems VERY easy to use.  What I like is that when you change modes the display tells you what each one is -- how simple is that?  It's a little bigger than I would have wanted, but the zoom is "in the lens" so it doesn't get any bigger (or get "stuck" in the zoom position if the batteries decide to suddenly die on me).  It's lightweight, but uses 4 AA batteries -- gotta get me a new charger that will charge four at a time!

DD has a Fuji digital camera and her pictures came out better at the wedding than mine did, so I thought, what the heck?  There must be something there...

I'll probably take it out of the box and play with it for a few days.  I'll let you all know how I make out!

Thanks for all your help!  I hope I made the right decision!:shoot me:

Whew!  Looks WAY too complicated for me!  I'm still trying to figure out all that my new camera does!

One thing I thought was so cool is it has a video feature, including sound.  I took about a 30 second video from our stern balcony on the Noordam of the wake -- when I need a quick fix, I just watch that video -- ahhhh.....

Haha that picture is actually a joke.  This is what it really looks like:

I need to hire a caddy to carry around all my glass (lenses) and other goodies!  It's freaking HOT on those islands!

Well what may seem like a daunting task and even makes one think at times "why bother?" let me tell you this!

Don't skimp on a camera.  You can never buy "too much" camera.  But don't be afraid to learn how to use it.  The best part about digital photography is it literally costs nothing to explore.  In the days of film it was so expensive for the novice/amateur to try different things with the cost of film and processing.  Even those that had their own darkrooms.

Why all the trouble?  Cruising is one form of vacation/leisure where you are at many places and there's a lot going on.  If you don't stop and take pictures you have no real memories of these things which can be good and bad.  Pictures are extremely important!

Every time I go through photos and look at them it brings back the memories of how much of a pain it was getting there to get that shot in many cases.  It brings a smile to my face many weeks/months/years later.  Was it worth it?  Absolutely!

Another note to self....do not let Brian cruise with dave.....

He's got a Nikon D50 that he absolutely loves.... one of his fellow scout masters has lenses for it and lets Brian try them out.

Hey Peggy!!

What a small world...I just clicked around and found this topic.  Lo and behold,  I just bought the Fuji S700 the other day!!  My previous camera (Minolta-DiMage) needed to be replaced, as I had dropped it in Bda a couple of years ago, and one of the battery compartment cover latches broke off.  Since then I have taped it shut (not pretty).  A couple of weeks ago the remaining latch gave out, so taping just wouldn't work anymore.  BTW, I had checked, and it would have cost me $180. to send it in for repairs...eek   The technology has gotten so much better, and the price lessened....can't beat that!  The Fuji is almost identical in looks to my old one, but so much better!  Snap and shoot...that's me...LOL

Hope all is well with you and Joe!!

Happy New Year!! :big grin:

Hi Fran!  So nice to hear from you!  How's Eddie???  Well, you'll have to let me know how you like your new camera -- so far I'm happy with it!  Of course when we were on the Noordam in November I hardly took ANY pictures!  The only downside to this camera (for me anyway -- sounds like you're used to carrying around a camera of this size) is how big it is compared to what I had -- so that's something I just have to get used to.  Love the video option -- I took a great 30 second or so video looking out our aft facing veranda -- ahhh, heaven!

Are you planning a trip to Bermuda sometime soon?  We are looking at the Dream out of Boston in July, but the prices are outrageous!  We'll probably wait and book last minute.  Although, now I"m thinking it would be less expensive to just fly there and stay -- and we'd be there longer!  Just haven't decided where we'd stay.  Looked at Grotto Bay and Grape Bay resorts.  Any suggestions?

Take care, and say hi to Eddie for us!

i have a sony dsc-h1, modified slr and i love it (wish it was a little smaller sometimes though).  it takes beautiful pictures.  shutter lag cld be better.  but i have had this for awhile now, so the newer, slimmer models have probably improved that further.

I have a Canon S2 IS.  It takes great pictures and the image stabilization helps a lot when using telephoto zoom.

Peggy, yes, I'm used to the size of the camera, identical in shape to my last one!  Originally (the Minolta), I chose this size for good grip and stability.  I guess I still feel the same, and hope the newer stabilization feature will add to it.  I also tried the video option...took Ed, half asleep, over his morning coffee...not a keeper...(deleted)LOL   The feature worked well, so I'm looking forward to capturing a sigh moment, as you have, too!  Too new to judge as yet, but I have taken a few shots of our newest grandson, and this camera allows for a quicker next shot...I like that!

No plans for Bermuda on our agenda, as yet, but one never knows!!  Land trip...we stayed at Grotto Bay over NYE a couple of years back, really liked it there.  Excellent location, especially for anyone, like you, who is used to being in St. George...and just a stone's throw from The Swizzle Inn!! ;)  We sailed the Dream when she was still the Dreamward...she was our first NCL cruise, and it was to Bermuda!  With 5 land trips, and 14 cruises, all to Bda, you know we'll be back...nowhere else makes the top of our list!!!  We have the carib coming up in April.  Have to check my count, it may be our 30th cruise!  OMG...LOL

I really like my new camera, it takes GREAT pictures, but is a little bulkier than I would have liked -- but it was the only way I could get at least a 10X zoom in my price range.  I like the fact that the lens "zooms" in the casing rather than the lens coming out (does that make any sense???) so I have a sense of where the camera lens is, and don't have to worry about the lens being stuck in the zoom position if the batteries die.  I will say the batteries in the Fuji last a LONG time -- it takes 4 AA batteries, and I don't believe I changed the batteries for at least a month!

I still also rely on my good old Canon Sureshot 85 MM film camera in case the batteries in the digital should be dead.

Well, now that I've used my new camera on my second cruise, I've got some more comments.  It does take great pictures; has long battery life; is very easy to use; even takes great video.  Problem is, I was so used to a small digital camera that most times I'd leave this one in the cabin and take my good old Canon Shurshot film camera -- and I didn't buy the digital to leave it behind.  I love walking around and taking pictures of the ship -- we've now been twice on the Noordam and I have NO pictures of the ship at all!

So the bottom line is, I just am not crazy about the bulkiness of it.  I think what I'm going to do now is buy ANOTHER digital camera, one that's small enough to put in my purse, to carry with me for quick photos, and use the "big" digital for shore excursions and whatever else.

Any suggestions on a compact digital camera with decent zoom, face detection, image stabilization?
