Emerald Princess Southern Caribbean Medley Friday April 4, 2008
We are in our early 40’s, not married and have no kids. We have been on 19 previous cruises most of which were to the Caribbean; 7 RCCL, 4 NCL, 2 Princess, 5 Carnival and 1 Celebrity. Please keep in mind this is my opinion based on my experience.
Like most of the cruises we take we chose this cruise based on a combination of the ship and itinerary. The itinerary included two islands we hadn’t been to before Grenada and Dominica, Bonaire an island we had been to only once before and enjoyed and two of our favorite ports of call; Aruba and St. Thomas. During our sailing the Emerald Princess celebrated its one year anniversary of its christening; it still had that new ship smell We had enjoyed the Caribbean Princess in 2005; the Emerald Princess has all the good features of the Caribbean plus some great improvements. This cruise ranks very high on our list of all time favorite cruises, based on a combination of ship, crew, fellow cruisers and itinerary. We had fabulous weather the entire cruise, mostly sunny and 80.
Emerald Princess
The Piazza
The Piazza is a wonderful space on this ship. It is the equivalent of the atrium area found on most ships; this one is three decks high. Deck five of the Piazza includes the International Café, Vines, Michelangelo Dining Room, the future cruise consultant and the internet café.
Upper decks around the Piazza contain shops, the reception desk, and Crooners martini lounge.
The International Café is a full service bar and coffee bar and also includes a counter featuring a wide array of free and nominal charge items throughout the day. In the morning croissants and pastries are available. In the afternoon there is gelato, sandwiches, cookies and other sweets. In the evening there are various tapas.
Vines is the wine bar with an expanded selection of wines by the glass. Flights are available to sample three reds or whites at a time. On selected nights throughout our cruise a ricquolet was available, melted cheese over cooked potatoes with proscrutto. Other nights a cheese plate is offered. Sushi is also available for a charge.
Internet service at the café and WiFi available in public areas throughout the ship was slow at sea. While in port the speed was faster with the best speed reported while in St. Thomas.
The future cruise consultant was available a few hours each morning and afternoon. There is a number box next to the office door. We wanted to book an Alaskan Cruisetour for the next year. The Alaskan offerings would go online during our cruise. We met with the future cruise consultant to convey our preferences. When the cruises were available online she was able to book exactly what we wanted then left a message on our phone so we could stop by her office to review.
There are also various entertainers in the Piazza through out the afternoon and evening consisting of comedian/jugglers to four piece string quartets.
Princess Theater
Luckily we aren’t show people so we didn’t spend much time in the theater. I had heard complaints about the size of the theater and problems with seat saving. We didn’t have a problem finding a seat; it’s the size of the seat I have issue with. The seat itself is very narrow. The small table hidden in the arm of the seat reminds me of an old school desk. This along with the narrow seat won’t fit the average buffet line participant.
Our Inside Stateroom
Our stateroom was a category K, inside P330 on Plaza deck, a couple doors down the hall from the Piazza on the port side. The proximity to the Piazza and easy access to the gangway on deck four make this a convenient location. Below I describe how small the room was, this is not necessarily a negative, because I would book this very same room again based on the location and price. This stateroom was located directly below the casino; we did not experience any noise from the casino through the ceiling.
This was probably the smallest cabin and most definitely the smallest shower we have ever encountered. There was one small walk way around three sides of the bed and a desk, TV and refrigerator along the wall opposite the bed. The illusion of space is provided by the placement of mirrors on opposite walls over the bed and desk. There was a small table in front of the refrigerator that would have caused more then one stubbed toe since there is clearly no room for it, we stashed the table in the spacious open closet. Although the room was small there was plenty of storage. The open closet is nearly the width of the room. In the closet area is floor to ceiling cabinet containing the safe and five or six shelves. On either side of the bed was a night stand with two good sized drawers and a cubby space. Opposite the refrigerator was another large cabinet under the desk, with a few small open shelves along the side.
The bathroom was a challenge for anyone with long legs, there wasn’t much clearance between the stool and the sink. Storage above the sink was slight with three small shelves along one side with a large shelf area under the sink. The shower itself is so small a comedian suggested soaping the walls, stepping in, turning around and then your cleanJ It was very small. One day I encountered a clogged drain in the shower. It only took about 15 minutes for maintenance to show up and unclog the drain.
Gatsby’s Casino
The casino contained a variety of slots and denominations along with many tables. I don’t gamble much, but we like to each play $20 the first night to see what happens. My $20 turned into almost $200, after playing it down a little we walked away with a nice profit the first night. The first formal night was a smoke free casino night, I don’t remember if there was another one. During most nights, the smoke in the casino didn’t seem too overpowering.
Anytime Dining
This was our first experience with Anytime Dining. Normally I prefer the traditional time and table assigned dining, but I really enjoyed the anytime option during this cruise. When I have traditional dining I tend to feel guilty if I don’t make it dinner one night, but with any time that isn’t a factor. We normally eat late, so the nights we ate in the dining room we didn’t go until about 8:30. I noticed a lot of pagers between 7:00 and 8:00, which seemed to be a popular time. When we went about 8:30 we never had to wait and were always seated immediately.
Horizon Court
The first night we ate dinner in the Horizon Court, it was the seafood extravaganza! There was shrimp, lobster claws and crab knuckles. I ate breakfast here a couple times also. The made to order omelets was different than I have experienced on other ships. Here they take your order and the eggs are made in a central kitchen area between both sides on the buffet then brought back out to you, while you have to wait and find your self in the way of others trying to get food from the serving area. Needless to say after my first omelet I didn’t bother. Another breakfast highlight was the presence of real hash browns rather than the tri-tators most ships buffets offer. I didn’t make it here for lunch often. The only other thing I noticed was the horrible salad dressing. I don’t remember Princess salad dressing being this bad, but I have always despised Carnival salad dressing; I’m guessing this has changed since Carnival took over. For an hour every afternoon there is free ice cream in the buffet usually 3:00 to 4:00. I can’t say I ever had a problem finding a table in the buffet area, although a couple times I found a table with no silverware and had to wait a considerable time for someone to bring me some. There are beverage stations in the buffet that are self serve, but I think Princess would rather we let the wait staff serve the beverages. This practice could reduce the spread of germs and virus. It is also hard to carry a plate and beverage, since trays are not available.
Café Caribe
The Café Caribe is a separate buffet line located towards the aft of the Horizon Court buffet. Each night there is a different theme in the Café Caribe. We ate dinner here a couple nights, I really enjoyed the Bavarian dinner. One afternoon, while in Bonaire I believe, I stumbled upon a lunch featuring all kinds of pasta, my favorite lunch of the cruise.
Michelangelo Dining Room
We ate in this anytime dining room three or four times during this ten day cruise. We always went between 8:00 and 9:00 and ate at a table for two and were always seated immediately. The service each time was always exceptional. One thing I can’t stand is when the waiters sing and dance in the dining room. We were happy that we never encountered that while in the dining room. We heard there was singing and dancing the last night, luckily we ate in the Crown Grill that night.
Sabatini’s
Sabatini’s has been moved to an upper deck overlooking the aft. Next to Sabatini’s is Adagio, in Adagio you can order drinks and desserts from Sabatini’s. When dining at Sabatini’s only two choices are necessary, your main dish and dessert, all other courses are served. Dinner includes several appetizer courses, but each is a small portion so you don’t get too full. The charge is $20 per person. I ordered lobster and it was superb.
Crown Grill
The Crown Grill offers an appetizer, soup/salad, main dish, side dish and dessert choice. The side dishes are served family style so everyone can share. Lobster is available for an additional charge above the $25 per person charge. The first time I had the NY strip, the second time I had the filet. The filet was better. The first time I ordered the berry/apple cobbler for dessert, warm with ice cream on top, very yummy. The next time I ordered the dessert sampler, it contains small samples of all available desserts except for the cobbler. The waiter brought the sampler and the cobbler, just to make sure we didn’t miss anything. I really enjoy the Crown Grill, the menu has so many things on it you can visit several times during the cruise and get something different each time.
Chef’s Table
We had read about the Chef’s Table on Cruise Critic and other internet sources before arriving on board and decided we wanted to try it. As soon as we got on board at about 12:30 we called the Dining Hotline #6219 to express our interest in the Chef’s Table. We were told the Chef’s Table was booked but would we like to be put on the waiting list. We said that yes we would like to be on the waiting list, and then they asked if we had any food allergies, which we don’t. Later that night while at dinner we got a message that we had been chosen for the Chef’s Table and to call Generoso the maitre’d after breakfast the next day. We figured they had told everyone there was a waiting list to gauge the amount of interest and determine how many they could accommodate. There were three Chef’s Tables during our ten day cruise. We talked to others that attended different Chef’s Tables and their experience with calling the dining hotline was the same although the menu they were served was different.
We met at the International Café and were given a lab coat to wear while we were in the kitchen. We paraded through the dining room and immediately upon entering the kitchen washed our hands. The various areas of the kitchen were explained as we walked through. All the cooks we so happy to see us, I think they really like the chance to see some of the guests, since they are always behind the scenes. The appetizers and champagne were served while in the kitchen. During the appetizer course Executive Chef Michele explained each dish and provided more insight on the workings of the kitchens, there are nine kitchens on the Emerald Princess. He also answered all of our questions. After the appetizers we left the kitchen and went back out through the dining room. We took off our lab coats and were escorted to our table in the Michelangelo Dining Room. The table had a beautiful exotic flower arrangement and real candles. The remaining courses followed with plenty of wine to accompany. A separate table was provided where Chef Michele could flambé the main dish with flaming brandy and au jus.
At the end of dinner a photographer took a picture of the table with Chef Michele and Generoso, personally presented to us by Generoso later in the cruise. Each female participant was presented with a red rose and a copy of Princess Cruises Courses, A Culinary Journey including a copy of our menu. This was truly a unique and memorable experience. I hope we are able to enjoy the Chef’s Table experience next year on our Diamond Princess Alaskan cruise.

Pizza
The pizza counter had three types of pizza a pepperoni, margarhita and a daily special each day. The pizzas are large in size with a thin crust. The pepperoni was very greasy. One day I had a very tasty slice on Mexican pizza as the special. There is an ice cream for charge place right next to the pizza place.
Grill
I had a cheese burger from the grill a couple afternoons. The cheese burger was good but small, but you could get a double if you asked. Other offerings include, chicken, veggie burgers, hot dogs and brats.
Daily Recap
Thursday April 3, 2008 Minneapolis to Fort Lauderdale
We always fly to the embarkation port at least one day early just incase there are flight delays or lost luggage to recover. We flew American Airlines from Minneapolis to Dallas/Fort Worth, then on to Fort Lauderdale. All flights went smoothly and were on time. In Fort Lauderdale we were booked at the Comfort Suites Airport/Cruiseport on Federal Highway. I had never stayed at this property before and will not stay there again. The front desk personnel were impolite and unconcerned. Our room was damp and smelled of urine, the bathroom was dirty and moldy and there were dirty towels and hair in the shower.
Friday April 4, 2008 Fort Lauderdale
Friday morning we went to the cruise port between 10:00 and 11:00. After dropping our bags with the porters, we proceeded into the terminal and received a number 1 and health forms to fill out. At noon they let the Platinum and Elite members check in, then about 15-20 minutes later called group 1 for check in. Check in was by deck and was pretty easy; a swipe of the credit card and a swipe of the passport. Then onto the ship at about 12:30. We stopped at our room first to drop our carry-ons and met our room steward, Ricardo.
Then we were off to explore this beautiful ship. First we found the Crown Grill and Sabatini’s to make reservations. Then we placed a call to the dining reservations line to express our interest in the Chef’s Table. We located the aft pool area where we would have our first informal meet and greet, followed by sampling drinks at all pool bars. We decided to try the grill for lunch instead of braving the crowds in the buffet. Our muster station turned out to be the casino. There were enough chairs for everyone. The drill was pretty painless compared to others we have endured.
After the drill we donned our mardi gras beads and went to the aft pool for our first meet and greet at the aft pool and bar area. We had a good turn out and had fun meeting many of those we had been chatting with online for many months. We were still back there for sail away. Tonight we ate at the Seafood Extravaganza in the Horizon Court. Then we went to the casino and won!
Saturday April 5, 2008 at sea
Our first sea day, we found a couple of loungers on the second level at the Calypso Pool. We stayed long enough to watch the first movie then it was time to get cleaned up before our official Meet and Greet. Our formal Meet and Greet was at 1:00 in Skywalkers. Princess did a nice job of making the venue available and staffed for us. I was disappointed to find that the turn out was much less then anticipated by the responses conveyed on our thread. Tonight was our first formal night. We ate in the Michelangelo Dining Room. After dinner we went back to the casino, it was smoke free night.
Sunday April 6, 2008 at sea
Our second sea day, we were back at our favorite loungers. We stayed long enough to watch the first movie, by the time the second movie was started I was feeling kind of fried. We decided to check out the horse racing and auction. Then we stayed for the bingo session. We were disappointed to learn that they had stopped using the bingo cards that you punch through and make an extra buck by selling bingo daubers. We missed the cover all by one number. Tonight was our chef’s table experience, more details above. After dinner we were too full to do much and just crashed.
Monday April 7, 2008 Aruba
Our original plan was to go to the beach and then shop in town. Since I was fried to about medium rare we decided to skip the beach and just shopped around in town for a while, then stopped at Iguana Joe’s and Senior Frogs for beers on the way back to the ship. Then we went for a dip in the back pool and later watched The Devil Wears Prada on MUTS. Later we met our friends at Crooners for martinis, and then ate dinner in the dining room.
Tuesday April 8, 2008 Bonaire
In Bonaire we booked the early shore snorkel through the ship. We met the tour on the pier at 8AM and rode the bus to the snorkel beach. We would be snorkeling at Wind Sock Beach, next to the airport. There was a small rocky beach and a lot of fish to see. Most of the coral at the site was fire coral and despite the warnings not to touch it many people came away with fire coral burns. The excursion description said that we could take any bus back, which was not the case. The excursion included one beverage and said there would be more for purchase which again was not true. We were back from the excursion before noon. After getting cleaned up I found a quiet spot on the Promenade Deck to read my book for awhile. We were leaving this port early at 2:00. At 3:00 this afternoon at the Neptune’s Reef Pool was BAR WARS. First a couple bartenders demonstrate how to make some of the most popular pool side specialty drinks. Then five men and five women compete to make the drinks. Today it got a little out of hand, but not too much so, and was totally hilarious and fun to watch. Later we ate dinner at the Café Caribe, it was Bavarian night. After dinner we met friends at the Explorers Lounge for the late show of Celebrity Liars Club, which was very funny.
Wednesday April 9, 2008 Grenada
This was our first time to Grenada. We had heard the people here are very pushy and intimidating. All our literature from Princess said we would tender at the port, although we did dock. I booked a tour through the ship based on this information. We booked the ‘Spice Island’ Tour. Our tour had two buses of twenty people each. We learned that since the island was hit with hurricane Ivan in 2004 it is no longer the number one producer of nutmeg. Our first stop specialized in nutmeg syrup and liqueur and various fruit jams and jellies. We had the chance to sample all offerings and could view their production area. I bought some guava jam and pepper jelly. Our second stop was a fruit plantation. There was a path to follow and see nutmeg trees, cocoa pods on a tree, mango, papayas, grapefruit, bananas and more. Our last stop was the old Westhall Rum Distillery. The grounds contain the remnants of an old sugar mill and distillery. We were given a tour that described how the mill had once worked. Then we were given generous samples of their various rums, so that we could make an informed decision of the best bottle to buy and bring home. Tonight we ate at the Crown Grill. We planned to go up to the deck party after dinner, but once again we were to full and tired to go back out after dinner.
Thursday April 10, 2008 Dominica
This was our first time to Dominica; it is now one of our favorites. At Dominica we joined a private tour organized by a member of our roll call. We spent a fabulous day touring with Reyno. I had read many great reviews of Reyno on Cruise Critic. There were about 20 of us total, ten in each very comfortable van. We were lucky enough to be in the van Reyno was driving, he also supplied a very knowledgeable guide to accompany each van, and ours was Dahna. Our first stop was Emerald Pool, before the crowds. We hiked to the pool and when we returned to the parking lot Reyno was waiting for us with a cooler of ice cold water and beer. After the Emerald Pool we stopped at one of the Hot Sulphur Springs. Our next stop was Mr. Nice’s Fruit Stand. Mr. Nice’s isn’t a place to stop and buy fruit, but a place where we could sample all kinds of fresh fruit and some very good candied coconut then give a tip if we desire. There is also a stand that sells drinks and hot sauce, we bought some hot sauce and really like it. All along the way Reyno stops to point out beautiful flowers and various fruit. On the way to Trafalgar Falls we stopped at a small beach to check out the black sand. Then we drove through the Botanical Gardens in town. After the short hike to Trafalgar Falls Reyno had another treat for us, a very tasty rum cream, or more water or beer if we preferred. Our last stop was a scenic overlook high above the town, a great photo opportunity. We highly recommend Reyno as a tour guide.
We decided to do a load of laundry this afternoon. We found an empty washing machine in the third laundry room we found. It was $1.25 to wash and another $1.25 to dry. The Patter listed Italian for dinner at Café Caribe, but it was wrong. After we didn’t find much that interested us in Café Caribe we went to our room to change and went to the dining room. After dinner we met friends for Billy Vader’s late show in the theater. It wasn’t as funny as I expected.
Friday April 11, 2008 St. Thomas
Today we decided to go to St. John’s. They called for immigration about 8:00. We were off the ship a short time later. We found a cab and had to wait awhile for more people before heading to Red Hook $10 per person. We made it to the 9:00 ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay which was $5 per person, then a cab to Cinnamon Beach $7 per person. We were at the beach before 10:00. The beach was beautiful and we had the place practically to ourselves. There was good snorkeling out by the island. We caught a cab back to Cruz Bay about 1:00 and took the 2:00 ferry back to Red Hook. We did some shopping at Havensight before boarding the ship.
Tonight we ate at Sabatini’s, another fabulous meal. After dinner we caught most of Carl Strong’s show at Explorers Lounge. He was very funny.
Saturday April 12, 2008 at sea
Our last day at sea and we were back at the pool bright and early. I stayed long enough to watch two out of three movies. Tonight was our second formal night. The Captain Circle Party was before dinner. We ate in the dining room. Then we found a good spot in the Piazza to scope out the champagne waterfall.
Sunday April 13, 2008 Princess Cay
I think we had to wait for about half an hour to get on a tender. We found a couple chairs at the beach and I picked up the float I had reserved. I spent most of my time floating around. When it was time to eat we went through the line. I was surprised at how tasty the ribs were. There was a separate fruit bar. After lunch we spent some more time at the beach before heading back to the ship. This afternoon was the owners’ horse race. We bet on the winning horse! Since the last night in the dining room is usually pretty bland we decided to go back to the Crown Grill. We packed and put our suitcases out.
Monday April 14, 2008 Fort Lauderdale
Even though we didn’t have a flight to catch because we would be spending the night in Fort Lauderdale; we were assigned the first color after shore excursions and transfers. We were at our hotel by shortly after 9:00, after being called from our assigned waiting area about half an hour late. Immigration, locating luggage and customs went very smoothly.
Random Thoughts
Why isn’t the drink of the day discounted?
I don’t mind not getting towel animals.
I love that they don’t sing and dance in the dining room.
I wish there was a smaller tear away section of the Patter, so I don’t have to carry the whole thing around with me.
The aft portion of the ship seemed to experience a lot more motion from the seas and vibration from engines that I had experienced on other ships.

I love to lay by the pool and enjoy a relaxing day of reading and looking out at the ocean. Is the MUTS a real distraction to those that really don't want to watch a movie?

I noticed the same on the Crown. If it's on and you don't want to hear it, the other pool is right next door.

Very well written! Tell Beth thanks!
We ate at Sabatini's on the Grand a few years ago. OMG! All the food! It was good, but there was so much of it. I take it they've cut back these days?
