Review of 16 European Explorer onboard Grand Princess

Flight – Toronto to Rome (direct) with Air Canada. 8.5 hours long, boring, in Economy (need I say more?) Landed in Fuicimino -  no problems with customs, or baggage. All prearranged drivers waiting outside of baggage claim area with signs.

Our prearranged driver was personable and spoke excellent English (Rome Limo’s – Stefano Costantini owner. Our driver was Marco.) He drove us from airport to downtown hotel for 45E . Drive was approx 40 min in noon rush hour.

Rome Hotel –  Hotel White, appox 300m from Trevi Fountain. Very close to other attractions. Located down a small cobblestoned street. Grill restaurant next door, deli across the street. We loved the hotel, very Italian, small, breakfast included, in breakfast room in basement, elevator.  No problem with airconditioning, view funky (flowered courtyard) room was  a suite (I did not ask for a suite) Bathroom well equipped, but as usual in Europe no face cloth (no big deal) Beds hard. Check in and out easy. Staff Italian and spoke English.

Rome – due to time constraints did not see much, despite many maps got lost +++++. Hot as hell. Tons of tourists, tons of car exhaust. Tons of hills, tons of scamming aggressive street hawkers (at times verged on dangerous, beware of flower sellers). Homeless gypsy women on streets asking form $$ and when not given they are proficient in calling you filthy names in Italian.

Trevi Fountain very crowded, and bigger than I expected. Best to go around 0600, when the only ones there are you and the fountain cleaner.

Quatro Fontana – probably the only person that has actually seen it. Stumbled on it when lost, except for the traffic they are nice fountains.

Collesium – awesome, crowded, watch for pick pockets.

Wedding Cake – awesome, Italians hate it.

Pantheon – awesome

Piazza’s – hit just about everyone of them, and loved them all. Very crowded.

Spainish Steps – totally disappointed in them. What’s the big deal???

Castle St Angelo – Massive

Churches – OMG… too many to mention. They are everywhere.

Crowne Plaza Hotel – Downtown pick up point for Princess transfer. Typical north amercian type hotel that looked like it was run of the mill. In a more residential area closer to Vatican.

Princess Transfer Rome to Civitavecchia – Handled by the Aloshi Brothers. Airconditioned buses, went well. Baggage was sent independently in trucks from hotel. Slightly disturbing leaving luggage in a hotel lobby. No proper transfer form was issued by Princess (all you had was the section of your itinary to prove that you booked a transfer – they did ask for this)

Civitavecchia – Drive from Rome approx 1 hour through country side. Pleasant. Check in at Princess was swift. From arrival to stepping onto ship….. approx 12 min. Cabins were ready. Buffet lunch was on. Coffee cards, pop cards and wine packages were available. (Coffee card was $24.98 and worth every penny)  Civitavecchia port was industrial and away from town areas. Did see some unfortunately blokes walking to ship, it was hot, and not a very safe area. I would not recommend going into the city to site see. I did not see taxis outside the port gates. There was heavy security checks at the port.

First Impression of the Grand Princess -  She’s huge. One long ship. Nothing glitzy about it ( I like the less glitzy gals). She needs a reno. Carpets are worn, bedskirts are disgusting. Mattresses comfortable, duvets nice. Drapes disgusting. Mold starting in bathrooms. Some hallways smell of sewer, occasionally days were a waft of sewer odour comes out of cabin bathroom. Balconys have the blue cork type flooring (nice). Lighting is dull, need more electrical outlets. Tons of storage in cabins. Was clean, but in need of a facelift……don’t we all???

Grand Princess – Cabins C242 (balcony)  C752 (wrap around aft balcony)  C749 (aft suite) C616 (mini)  Current Captain Niccolo Bonmarco (?). Rarely seen or heard. Rarely blew horn. Even crew commented on the silence of this Captain. We suspected that he never really existed, but ran the ship from some exotic island via of a Blackberry. Last Captain Perrin is currently on vacation, and apparently is on the speaker 24/7 +++

Can’t comment on the entertainment…… couldn’t stay awake long enough. Did manage to see Philippa Healy and thoroughly enjoyed her operatic voice.  Princess Theatre is comfortable, and used also for meeting areas for excursions. Alternate lounges were equally comfortable and well layed out, and had entertainment nightly. Some of the lounge singers were of lesser quality. Princess Armadillo string quartet were very good.

Photographers were as all… annoying, cheaply done, and costly.

Spa quite frankly is a rip off. Had a deep tissue massage, and quite frankly felt like I had been run over by a truck even after thoroughly describing what could or couldn’t be done.

Shared my sisters couples massage, and it was great. Had a pedicure that was slap happily done, and a facial done by the skin girl who was doing her very last one and getting the hell off the ship and back to South Africa….. use your imagination. The usual push for purchases of spa products.  I was given two spa treatments as a gift, and had quite a fight with the spa regarding the credit of these to my account. They finally conceded 14 hours prior to disembarkation after a note sent to them by the pursers office.  Will never use the spa again on any ship, quite frankly in my opinion it just isn’t worth it.

Resistance pool located outside the spa is a nice quiet pool. Resistance is way too much for this fat old lady. Loungers outside spa are uncomfortable, but located in a nice quiet area. Sun deck above spa needs to have indoor/outdoor carpet replaced. It is infested with aphids, and they bite. Some loungers are in need of repair. Children’s play area and water playground is located in a segregated area here.

Indoor pool is the usual, no separate pay area here.  Outdoor pool area is the usual. Aft pool is a nice area, but very noisy from engines.

MUTs in my opinion is a PIA.  Way too noisy. Movies showing were ok, but very few people watching. I thought that special personal speakers were provided, but they just let the big movie speaker rip day and night…………………

Wine List….. sorry folks, but it’s crappy. I never thought I was a wine snob, I know very little, but soon found out according to the wine tasting both simple one and more exclusive one, and Princess’s wine list, I drink very good wines when at home. It’s way over priced compared to what we pay in Canada, and it’s the cheaper end of wines. The worst part of the wine issue….. the ship ran out of most types of wine five days before the cruise ended (go figure…. Poor planning if you ask me)  Booze prices were the usual.

Food – I expected better, and found out Princess is no better than the other major lines. The specialty restaurants (Sabitini’s, and Painted Dessert) were very disappointing I did not enjoy anything they offered there. All food in both places was also way too salty.  Service was good though.

Buffet was the same each breakfast, and very little deviation at lunch or dinner. They buffet area is very crowded with poor layout.  It becomes congested and dangerous. The coffee and tea stations were also poorly layed out. I didn’t mind the coffee, and had purchased the coffee card for the cappachinos etc.  They ran out of regular tea bags many days.

Dining Room service was excellent although rushed (8:30 seating).  The dining atmosphere in the Botechelli dining room was very noisy, you could not hear the person sitting beside you to talk. They need to look at doing something to correct this problem. The assist Maitre D was evident nightly to all tables. There was nothing special or outstanding about any of the meals. They were nicely presented, but often tasteless.

Balcony dinner was arranged for eight of us on one of the suite balconies. It was worth it. We had the surf and turf. The Lobsters were huge, and beef well sized. The table was set with fresh floral arrangements (one for each couple). Champagne was provided, two waiters, and a private photographer. For your 8x10 picture included ($100 per couple.)  Here’s the kicker… this dinner was arranged by one of the couples in our group, and they paid for it as a treat. But since they paid for it, the ship would only allow one 8x10 for the dinner, meaning that each couple had to buy their own 8x10 . I’m sure if  we had of challenged them, they might have conceded, but we couldn’t be bothered.  We paid the money for the photo (best damn one of the whole trip), and never bought another from them.

The waiters arrived 30 min prior to the meal, and set up the tables. Two waiters arrived, once the majority of courses was delivered one of the waiters left. The other waiter waited in the hallway to be unobtrusive. We all had fun, and I’m sure royally ticked off the neighbours (despite the roar of the oceans back there, we were pretty noisy singing Janis Joplin songs)

Onboard shopping – Limited. Poorest I’ve seen yet on any ship.

Flower Stall – Overpriced.

Wedding Chapel – very dull, although it did have fresh flowers in there.

Casino- Ok, I suspect the slot machines are broken, and I did write a letter about it on board. When you pull the dolphin handles they are heavy and stay in the down position causing the slot machine to keep running and using all your credits. Did win a few times  on other machines. A few tables. Even when no smoking signs up it is still filled with heavy smoking.

Excursions – Well organized for getting on the buses, but some of the exursions Princess offers are useless. (Normandy Landing Beaches for one)

Amsterdam on your own was good.

Brugges on your own good (the tour guide was awesome “Jacques”)

Santigo de Compostella good (the tour guide was excellent)

Mt Vesuvious / Pompeii good (the tour guide at Pompeii was excellent)

Private Limos arranged (Florence, Cannes) were very good. Spoke good English, paid in cash, told them what we wanted to do and they arranged an itinerary. One driver was a little too passionate about religion, the Vatican, and where he took you to purchase things, and quite possibly preplanned a little “fleecing operation” on the great cheese caper of the century. ($4600.00 later and the drunken women of this caper still haven’t seen the cheese yet)

Naples

Princess Mt Vesuvious / Pompeii Excursion – Long and hot. Climb up Vesuvious was hot and hard. I did not make it all the way. Great view, some sulphur smell, thermal vents evident. Coming down is difficult as it’s very slippery in the rubble. Hard on the knees. Do not sit in the front seat in the bus, terrifying ride up and down. Bus stops part way up mountain. Small bar and store there. Wine and Lemoncello can be purchased there.  (both so so). Cameo Factory stop. Beautiful pieces there, but expensive. Short blurb on how Cameo’s are made. Washrooms located here.

Pompeii is long and hot. Very interesting especially if you get a great guide. You get a cooks tour, easy to get lost here. Read the book Pompeii before you go, and you get a really good feel for what life must have been like.

This excursion was worth the money, and time spent.

Livorno – Private driver arranged. Did not bother seeing Pisa. Drove straight to Florence, and yes, did get caught in a traffic tie u. Country side is very pretty to look at, driver took a back route to bypass some of the tie up and the small villages were beautiful.  Went to the Santa Croce Church. What a wonderful view of Florence from here. Wonderful church and grounds. Nasty toilet (worst fear came to life…. Hole in floor)

To Accademia and toured (tickets were prepurchased, and no queing). I expected more, was disappointed. Davids’s hands and feet are enormous compared to the rest of his body. Washroom facilities and shop. Next on to Florence market, and fleeced for olives, cheese and 21 yr old Balsamic Oil (delicious sheep cheese, olives like I’ve never had, balsamic oil, and creama, biscuits and salami) First they got the women drunk, sent the husbands to the bank and sold us $4600. worth of cheese)

Onto Duomo and shopping downtown. Tons of stores, shoes everywhere. Duomo was crowded. Ques everywhere. WOW what a wonderful building. Exhausting day, and whoops we forgot to get a receipt for all the cheese purchases!!!!

Cannes – What a beautiful city. It was a Sunday so difficult to move around. MonteCarlo was appealing but decided against and I’m glad we did. Others reported back that it was disappointing. We had a private driver who took us to St Paul de Vence (an artists village). We drank cappachino’s while watching the local old men play an early game of Bocchi, as the church bells called all the people to church for the kids first communion. We watched as funerals made their way to the local church, mooched thru the stores, snapped pictures galore, bought fresh flowers (that lasted for the whole cruise), and drank in the local hilltop bar. Afterwards drove on thru the small villages, and stopped for lunch. Drove thru Cagnes sur Mer, Colles sur Lop, Grasse, Villenuve, Gourdon. This area is wonderful. Sheer beauty, the French certainly take pride in their gardens. Drive on the Cannes waterfront is one of wealth and great shopping (nothing open on Sundays tho).

Barcelona – I was anticipating this port, and was slightly disappointed in it. We took a taxi to Park Guell. Beautiful day but very hot. Interesting park. Next a taxi to Las Ramblas, and walked down to a Tapas bar and ate, then onto Barri Gotic shopping. What a wonderful area. Becareful, there are some sketchy areas, walked back to the Statue of Colombus and caught a port bus. Taxi’s were very cheap and plentiful. Very difficult to do a lot in Barcelona if time constrains are tight. Car exhaust in this city is overwhelming. Crowds ++++  Wonderful shoe and bag stores J

Malaga – Was the replacement port call due to Casablanca being cancelled. We did not get off ship due to DH sick. All who did visit port enjoyed it, by exucursions or taxis to small villages surrounding Malaga. Very pretty to look at from ship. Harbour water is dirty. Why can’t these Europeans get their acts together?? Grafetti and trash everywhere.

Gibraltar – Walked from port to town then tram to go to top of the Rock. Very hot and crowded. Small shops +++ The day we were there, was the celebration of the Queen’s birthday and they were securing the city and planning for the parade. Took the tram to the top of the rock and bought the whole package to be able to see the caves, tunnels apes and nature area. Apes were cute, views awesome, caves interesting (very slippery L ). The nature area is really uninteresting, and you must catch the tram half way down the rock. To do this you walk out on a very scary platform jutting out from the mountain and wait for the next car. When it arrives, they open the gate and allow you to catch on. After attempting this twice, we got on a tram. It was a very windy day, and the whole ordeal terrifying for me. I now know that I have a height problem. Fish and chips was had at a Latin Tapas bar (go figure), and the walk back to the port shopping along the way. Wouldn’t go back to Gibraltor. View of Morocco was fantastic from the rock and we were glad to see it as our Morocco port call was cancelled due to security reasons.

.........to be continued

part three

Cadiz- what a refreshing city, very unique. I loved this port, very picturesque. The placas that we stumbled upon were wonderful. We shopped, sat in a bar and people watched. It was infront of the town hall, so got to watch many weddings that day.  The food was authentic and expensive. No doubt about it, they served the best Cappuchino on the planet. Taxis were cheap. Husbands arranged golf via cell phones while on ship as Princess stated they could not provide this service. They took a taxi to the course, the driver spoke English and he stayed with them for the day 120E total.. Cart, clubs, green fees were 93E each.  Course was very nice, well treed and trapped, just over 6000 yards. Great view of ocean although not on ocean and in a very nice local, about 45 min from port.

That night the seas turned rough, and I was very sick. Unknown if it was due to sea sickness or the Paella I ate in Cadiz. Others were not sick so we chalked it up to seasickness.

Lisbon- What a grey rainy day. Total bummer for wandering around. We cancelled the trek to Sintra and opted to stay in city and deal with rain. Headed for the castle which is located ontop of one of Lisbons hills (the highest one) It is located in a very unique rustic part of the city. Probably a more truer picture of what Portugal looks like outside the the larger metro areas.  The castle was very nice, with great views. Very shameful what tourists do to their heritage sites with garbage tho. The rain got heavier and make walking on rampart walls etc dangerous so we ended our tour and hit all the tourist type stores for the usual fleecing. Caught another taxi and the driver was young, we asked about shopping and he said he knew just what type of shopping we would like …Hmmm.. After a short drive he dropped us off infront of a taxi stand and said “see that door, there’s a two level modern mall in there, and the taxi’s will all be here for you when done”. It was a great mall. Next taxi driver took us thru all the old section of Lisbon with all the authentic tiled buildings etc, actually a little sleezy area but fascinating. They have some beautiful wide streets with huge statues, some drivers gave history while driving which was great.  Taxi’s were cheap and all our drivers spoke English and were very nice to us. The other group had taxi problems, they tried to run some kind of scam with them, and their impression of Lisbon was not great.

Vigo – WOW. We had an organized tour to Santigo de Compostella. About a 1.5 hour drive. Well worth it. It is a wonderful little town built around the Church. This is one of the three pilgrim spots in the world and an UNESCO site. The church is overwhelming, The history is phenomenal. Local cheese and wine again. The countryside is beautiful.

We booked this due to it being a Sunday, and most stores would be closed. I did research it prior, and it turned out to be more than I thought. The excursion was thru Princess. Bus ride was fine. Guide was fantastic.

LeHarve – Mixed thoughts due to Princess excursion to Normandy Landing Beaches. DH took this tour and was eagerly anticipating it, but was really let down. Not enough time spent at any sites, too much time spent on bus, and having lunch. Lunch was provided, very nice and too long.  I on the other hand caught a taxi to Honfleur and thoroughly enjoyed this picturesque fishing village. We shopped and had lunch water side. Lovely little town, with nice shopping. Very crowded. Taxi drivers English was poor, most drivers at port were reluctant to take us on this drive.
