Thanks for the update Shoreguy. Thanks to your photos, the Spirit will get a more thorough drydock. Just in time to be all shiney for our cruise out of NOLA in February. :tropics:

the response from NCL continues. Apparently Frank forwarded my email and pictures to Miami. I got a call today once again with a sincere apology and and explaining the plans for drydock. They never thought the rust was so bad.

To make sure I give the Spirit another try they are sending me something in the mail :confused:. I never asked for or expected any compensation but I am not turning it down. She indicated they were going to send one of the $250 cruise reward certificates but noticed I already had 2.

When I get the letter I will let you all know what NCL came up with. This is a one night CTN that lives on and on.

And that, Jim, along with how you handled the whole situation, is why NCL likes people like you vs. unnamed people always looking for nothing.

As a matter of fact, yes it would.  :big grin:

Thanks for sharing your CTN with us, SG.  As always, a great review.

When we sailed the Spirit last June, we encountered rust on our balcony as well, but knew it would be addressed in the upcoming dry dock.  The balcony glass/plastic wasn't cleaned for the entire cruise either, which is not a dry dock matter and was a tad disturbing.  Otherwise, we have enjoyed cruising on the Spirit and especially like the decor.

Glad you had a great time, foggy as it was! LOL!

Jim,

I am impressed with the way you handled the whole thing.   I am waiting with excitment to see what NCL sends you.

We cruised the Spirit in '05 and she was ok....not great, but ok.  It was the kid's first cruise and only a 5 night.  I just remembered the balcony glass was not cleaned after a previous poster mentioned that.  I also remember that the food was just so-so.

Good job Jim.

Got my letter from NCL today. $100 future cruise credit. I am delighted. I asked for nothing , expected nothing, and got a future cruise credit and a very nice letter. Considering I only paid $300 for the Spirit cruise a $100 for a little rust is very generous.

Nice things can happen when you handle your constuctive input properly.

30% is very generous - where's the casino. ;)

I read the following and immediately thought of how Jim handled his less-than-optimal experience on the Spirit:

"Judith Martin, aka Miss Manners, does not approve, especially of bullying in the guise of complaining. 'Expressing anger doesn't usually change people's behavior,' she told the Financial Times. 'If you start screaming and yelling, they will write you off as someone who would never be pleased anyway." (Reader's Digest, November 2008, p. 22)

I think Jim's well-reasoned and sensible explanation of why his sailing was less than hoped is what led to his positive outcome. We'd all do well to follow his example, and the advice of Miss Manners.

(stepping off my soapbox now)

I had a very similar experience with NCL regarding a Spirit cruise a number of years ago. I sent a simple letter to NCL addressing horrific issues about college spring breakers who were just awful. They were damaging the ship, kids were arrested, sex in the hot tubs, NCL flew in police at one of our ports to board with us etc. It was a mess of a cruise. But I balanced it with recognition of the efforts of what the crew did to still try and make it an enjoyable cruise, despite the nasty cruisers. I didn't ask for a thing but I received a future cruise credit of several hundred dollars. On the DS I was criticized because I talked about how well the crew did to work through the problems. I was accused that my view was slighted because we were in a penthouse, therefore my opinion didn't count.  :finger:

I remember that cruise and the thread very well. Some people just don't get it. I believe they had a huge group from The University of Florida.

Yup, that was it!

The pool area was the absolute worst scene. Well, maybe not... the young, extremely drunk girl carrying a red drink, thru the atrium area, wearing a white dress that was no longer covering the critical areas of the body, vomiting redish, pink gunk all over the furniture and herself. That was nasty.

I am sure she will share that story with her kids someday. If she remembers it at all :lmao1::vomit::lmao1:

Somebody posted on CruiseMates today that has booked the cabin next to mine on the Spirit. I did not have the heart to post the pics from my balcony. :confused:

In fact it looks like they addressing the issues I point out and most of the others including "replacing" the problem engine.

http://www.ncl.com/nclweb/pressroom/pressRelease.html?storyCode=PR_110408

Norwegian Spirit's total refurbishment includes:
  • 11 new staterooms are being added, eight of which are balconies;
  • one diesel engine is being replaced;
  • the Stardust Theater, with a capacity of approximately 700, is receiving all new seating and chairs;
  • seating throughout the ship is being reupholstered;
  • more than 21,000 sq meters of carpet is being replaced in public areas, stairwells, suites and staterooms;
  • new wallpaper is being installed in suites, corridors and public areas;
  • new curtains are being added to all suites;
  • tile in 300 bathrooms throughout the ship is being replaced;
  • all open decks including the main pool, kid's pool and four hot tubs are undergoing refurbishment;
  • the Roman Spa & Fitness Center is being upgraded with new doors, panels and seats;
  • more than 60 windows are being replaced;
  • the onboard phone system is being upgraded to a state of the art wireless system.

Seeing that list makes me want to book the Spirit. We loved the ship. Where are the staterooms being added?

They had plans to add them last time the Spirit was in major drydock but there was a problem with imagration and the company that was to do the work. The balcony cabins I think on were being added on deck 13. The game room is moving to deck 7 and the old game room is turning into cabins.

I need to look I may have saved the deckplans they published last time this was planned.

I did not find it but I did find an old DS thread. Last time they were going to add 22 balcony cabins on deck 13 :shock:

If anyone still has an NCL Caribbean catalog from fall 2005 the 22 cabin addition details are on those deck plans.

I just e-mailed my sister today to look into this for me since she is a TA.  If they are suites or balconies that fit 4, I may have to swap our current connecting balconies on deck 10 for one of these when we are back on the Spirit in August.
