Just back from a great 22 hours on the NCL Spirit and a 3 hour nap. This was my first and only time on this ship so I thought I would take a few minutes and share a few impressions.
Yyou all know I really find NCL fits me right now. Take the this with a grain of salt. A CTN is like no other cruise and stuff will and does happen.
The only reasons I booked this cruise was the gang of 10 from CTT that I would be joining. Having done a CTN on the Dawn in the Garden Villa no less I knew what a zoo they could be and made sure this time I did everything in advance to maximize the one night. Add a couple of weddings with a couple of 100 guests and you have a formula for gridlock. More on that later.
Overall this cruise was a 10 but only because of the company and the planning. Well the near perfect weather played a roll. So let’s get on with the details most first hand some second hand.
About a month ago I started the planning with emails to the ship to set up dinner for 10. After a few no replies I head back from Karan Arora the concierge who was our butler on the GEM a very special man. The rush to the reservation desk erased we had dinner at the Bistro for 10 taken care of. And a great dinner it was.
So the day of the cruise is here. Jump in care with an almost empty carry on at 9:10 am an off to the pier. Got there around 10:30 a perfect time with those getting off just leaving the lot on pier 88 opening parking spots right by the escalator.
Pier 88 and only pier 88 in NYC has been redone and it is great. You clear security when you first enter. Running out for a smoke is easy with a keycard and ID for those that care. Lines are clearly marked on the other side. Regular, Balcony and Mini Suite, Latitudes, Gold and Platinum members ( no you are not a VIP just because of your level), VIP and Casino as Sea. Second hand information if you are not VIP they give you your card and a boarding number and you are all set to board when called. In my case I went to the VIP& Casinos at Seas line Did the check in, gave them the credit card, got the security picture, and they headed off to get my card. The ladty checkingme in was really funny. She comes back and says “excuse me Mr. VIP you will need to follow me and the Concierge will have your key at 11:00
The VIP waiting room was very lonely. Me and 3 other passengers who all had on strange shamrock hats. Having not had breakfast the snacks, sandwiches and coffee were welcome. After a a little food I headed up to the other end of the waiting area to spend time with the gang. Well back to the VIP waiting room and Karan had arrived. We shared stories from our last cruise together. I made sure some other friends that were boarding the next morning were taken care of. Tipped in advance for the reservations and special treatment for my friends. No need I will see you onboard at dinner. I said take it now I have been on a CTN and the chances of seeing you again are slim and none. None turned out to be the case. Karan asked where the rest of my gang was. I told him waiting to board. He said go get them no reason they can not enjoy the space and board with him.

Headed out to herd the cats into the VIP lounge. Damn I am not even on the ship yet and this is getting longer then intended. The cruse really came together and started to rock with all of us in the lounge. 11:40 in front of the hundreds waiting for the weddings we were boarding. Not to worry the wedding parties wound get their revenge. Dropped the bags in the rooms and headed for the Beer Garden to get the party going. Nothing better then being the first onboard the ship.

Things start to get hazy from this point forward and remain that way until sleep at 2:30 am. Buckets of beer, beach bums, Patron, rum, martinis for the gang it the main dining room was not even open for lunch yet. It is a long story an inside joke but may where trying the mashed potatoes with gravy at the Beer Garden before lunch to buffer the booze.

Around 1 pm it was off to Windows for lunch. The food was fine and the wait staff we drew excellent. I stuck with the appetizers knowing it was going to be a long day. After lunch it was off for a tour of the ship. Getting a gang to make a decision is always a challenge. We made our way to Henry’s Pub an then into the casino to see if we could get our cards early but the desk was not open (no need as it turns out as our cards where delivered to our cabins with the free drink card). Decided to head up to Galaxy of the Stars and this was the first of several roadblocks from the weddings onboard. Closed until 3 pm for private party as was Maharini’s lounge before dinner when we went there and a whole section of the aft area for sail away until 6 pm.
Back to the Beer Garden and we got our same table. Clearly with everyone onboard it was no longer the peaceful space it was hours earlier. Headed out to find a spot for sail away. I found a great spot aft on deck 12, rounded up 8 extra chairs for the table and sent the other scouts back to herd the rest of the cats. Let the party get into high gear.

Lots of pics from that spot in the webshots. Fast forward off to duty free to pick up enough stuff to pay for the cruise with the savings. No limits of cigs or booze. Back to the cabin to get cleaned up for the evening. Insert card no green light repeat over and over and down to he desk. New card same result repeat the trip. While they were making my third card the light bulb went off. My hand blackberry case was the perfect spot to carry the card except it had a magnet to close it. I erased every card all by myself. What a dope.
Finally in 11618 which I named the rust bucket suite. The pictures tell the story but like many things on the Spirit (sorry those that love this ship) they need work. The list below was on the bed. I am not sure if it was just for the crowd on the CTN but I found it insulting.

Overall I loved the décor of the ship. The layout a bit quirky with some of the again on deck 5 midship that had to go forward and up a deck or 2 to go aft. The ceilings are very low. In the Casino one of the gang who is perhaps 5’4” could touch the ceiling. The Atrium is stunning. The pool area classy. The terraced aft area and kids pool area outstanding.
Off to the Casino before dinner. As expected the table stakes were raised for a CTN. 3 card poker and Blackjack $25 minimum. Let it ride $15. An hour later down $300 it was time to move on. A martini in Shanghai Bar and another at Henry’s before dinner and the fog thickened. Time for the Bistro.
Dinner was outstanding. The usual great escargot and mushroom soup. Split the 32 oz rib eye with another member of the gang. The rack of lamb got rave reviews. I passed on desert but the chocolate fondue was enjoyed by many. The company still was the best part of diner.
Wine with dinner was my job. I have found the Merryville Reserve a great value for years on NCL. It has crept up from $39 a bottle to $59. On the Jade this summer they ran out and replaced it with a regular Merryville but did not change the price. So last night I was smart enough to ask before I ordered. As expected they brought out a bottle of the white label generic Merryville a $20 retail bottle of wine. The Assistant F&B director showed up at the table. I shared with him nothing wrong with the current Merryville selection but it is not what is on the list and they need to update the list and price. He recommended an Argentinean Cab that as it turns out was outstanding.

Deeper in the fog I head back to the casino only to have the same luck. Never made a show in fact I don’t even know where the main showroom is. Around 2 am headed back to my room. Some of the gang headed upstairs where karaoke was still going on. Not the best crowd at that time in the morning. More F bombs flying then on the FU thread. Not a comfortable onboard environment.
Woke up at 6 am. Still dressed from the night before. I was just going to lie down for a minute to check out the ships speed and direction on the massive 12” TV. As it was we could have been at the pier. The sea was a bathtub and we were racing along at 3 knots of the south coast of Long Island. Got ready for bed and back to sleep until 7:30 am. Snapped a couple of pics of the Statue of Liberty from the balcony and headed off to meet others for breakfast in Windows at 8:15.

Breakfast food was fine. The eggs hot and served to order as long as you had 1.5 hours to enjoy it. Our waiter was clueless. A great idea one of the other waiters gave us 2 small pots of coffee. When they were empty we asked our waiter for refills. We got pots of hot water.
My food 45 minutes after we sat down

Back to the cabin to grab my things and clear out so they could make up the room. The cabin was already made up for the next guest. I want to apologize to those in the cabin now but I was not going to look for a public restroom.
Off the ship and traffic in NYC was a mess with a walk for the cure and a bike ride for MS. Everyone trying to go north from the pier were in for an adventure with West Street closed. I went south out the Holland tunnel (closed inbound for the bikers) and home in a hour.
A 3 hour nap and this is what you get.
Summary – I will do a CTN again but only with a great group of friends. I would cruise on the Spirit again but only for one night. Clearly not the best ship in the fleet. That was an impression echoed by many of the experienced cruisers in the gang.
I will add some more in the future. Need time to mellow on our fellow passengers and the bar staff souvenir glass hustle.

| I've never seen one of those lists of "stuff" with the prices. Which does, however, lead to a question. Do you know if you can order the duvets once you're home and off the ship? I've always loved the NCL duvets and often wondered where to get one.

The "list" reminds me of our hotel stays in China last summer. Everything had its price including things which we couldn't imagine anyone taking e.g. curtains. One hotel threatened to charge us as we only handed in one of our two door keys (the credit card style ones).
Glad you had a great time even with the ship's shortcomings.

I've seen other comments about the price list in the past, and all from CTNs. I agree that it's insulting.
Maybe a "My Cruise, Your Rust Bucket" picture album should be sent to NCL. There's no reason for that much rust to be showing (well, except for neglect).

I have seen that list also and felt the same way about it.
Thanks Shoreguy for the review. I'm one of those that love the Spirit, especially the open amphitheater area in the aft. Bummer that they closed off so many spots for parties though.
Sounds like a great time with a great bunch of friends!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, SG. I sounds like you and the CTT group had a great time! I have had two great cruises on the Spirit and consider myself a fan, but would have not been happy with all that rust either! Hopefully she'll get a good makeover next month during her drydock. I didn't see that list on either of my sailings but IMO it is quite tacky! It's almost like they are accusing people of wanting to steal stuff before the ship even sets sail! Not the greatest first impression!
Like I said above, I've had two enjoyable cruises on the Spirit, mainly because of all the kid's ammenities, but I am ready to try a new ship.
If you had to pick, which NCL ship is your favorite???
Welcome back to the rest of the gang too

If the kids area is important I would look at the Dawn. Those areas are very small and limited on the Jewel ->Gem . The new ships all have water slides in the main pool. Bowling and climbing walls are a plus on the pearl +
Dawn

Our only cruise - in 2005 on the Spirit was wonderful.
At that time, we were completely wowed by this beautiful ship. Being designed originally for the Asian market, she is somewhat cozy in many areas - much to our liking.
This reinforces the "First Time" rose colored glasses theory, I suppose.
Of course, we maintain this attitude with most aspects of life.
Never have been offended by any company addressing the loss of "their"
property - It happens every day by the sleazy folks who have the attitude
of "I paid for it - I'll take it home with me". Sad statement on society
rather than NCL.
Glad you had a good time.
Sorry that the Spirit is showing her age here and there - but aren't we all? If she still did the Alaska cruise, this would surely be on our "Must Do" list .
Nice pictures! Thanks..

Thanks for the pics, Shoreguy! Based on what you and others have said, I'm leaning towards the Dawn for our next cruise. Sailing out of NYC is a major plus for us, as well.

My Oh My - that balcony is disgusting. Bathroom shower is not too appealing either.
We were on the Spirit in Jan/07 - Penthouse - I do recall the sewer smells while in port NYC - but they did take care of them fairly quickly. The tile in the bathroom was lifting from the floor at that time as well as one of the living area chairs had a broken arm (which they removed for repair about day 3). Nothing major that would ruin our cruise - just another one of those few things one has to deal with occasionally.
Come to think of it the cabin stewards were the real pits as well.
Our butler (Jay) more than made up for any discrepancies in the suite and we absolutely loved the rest of the ship. Nice Asian decor.
Hopefully, they'll take care of the problems during the dry dock for engine repairs.
I've never seen the list of "Your cruise, Our Stuff" - and can see how some would find it offensive. Perhaps they could re-word that to say "yours to enjoy onboard" or some such wording as opposed to basically saying "Don't steal our stuff"
The fact is I'm sure that some cruisers feel they can take whatever they want. Some people just get into that "who cares" mode and do take towels, robes, glasses, and anything else that isn't nailed down.
On the other hand, you'd want to make sure everything was actually in the darn room so you weren't charged at the end of the cruise as well.

As always, great review Jim just what I need at the moment with rubbish weather at home, makes me wish I was there.
It must be greta to have the port on your doorstep. Makes the overnighter doable.
Glad to see the Lumix is still doing a good job
Think I would take the cabin price list as a souvenir, was there a price on the bottom for the list too! Must be an indicator of the CTN clientele.
Remember the previous minicruise on the Jade delayed our boarding.
Not that the bar staff complained, one of them said he served the biggest bar tab of his career on that cruise. (+15% gratuity)

After speaking the praises of NCL to my neighbor (who had been on other lines), she and her DH finally took to the seas on the Spirit last Spring. She came back and hated it...I couldn't believe some of the things she was telling me (she hit rough weather and I think that tempered a lot of her feelings) however she did mention the rust. Seeing your pictures confirmed what she saw.
Now some relatives, who had never cruised before, went on the Spirit the week before you did (they were disembarking the morning you were getting on). They absolutely positively loved it and cannot wait to get on another ship. They did everything, went to every show, PLAYED BINGO!, and came back with the biggest smiles ever. They might even be joining us next year on the Jewel TA.
Thanks for your review...and, yes, I too would have been miffed by the bed list. But that might be the nature of the beast for CTN's. Although my first cruise was a CTN on Carnival out of NY, and there was no such list. Who knows....
Ciao,
WaWW

| How the heck did I miss this? As always, Jim, I enjoyed your review and pictures. It's nice to see some faces of our CTTers, but I'm afraid I don't know who is who. Seems to me I've seen lists like that on one of the other lines I've sailed, I just can't pin down which one. I do tend to agree with those who said that "some" of the clientele, especially on a CTN, would probably take everything that isn't nailed down if it weren't for the list. Thanks!

Well it has been a week and time always gives you a more rounded perspective. There is so much more to like about the Spirit then not. As usual I have tried to help fix those things that could be better. Those of you that followed my Jade cruise to Norway know there were condition issues with the A3 courtyard villa. All fixed before I got off the ship
I took the time to send an email with pictures to the Spirit Hotel director. From the attached you can see they are aware of the issues I pointed out and atr part of the plan to be addressed in the upcomng drydock
Thank you so much for your kind words about your last cruise. I will be delighted to share those comments.
I appreciate you sharing the attached pictures which are certainly not flattering and I do apologize for the condition of the cabin.
We are aware of some rust issues on the shower floors and balcony ceilings. In the upcoming dry dock these issues amongst many others will be taken care of and you will see the Spirit in new splendor by the end of October.
I took the liberty to forward our correspondence to the appropriate personnel.
Once again thank you for your constructive feedback and I am looking forward to meeting you again some time in the near future.
Best regards from sunny New York,
FrankHasenwinkel | Hotel Director
Norwegian Spirit

If only the noodniks on the DS would handle their "cruise ruined - I hate NCL" issues in a similar MATURE manner, the world would be...ahhh...they'll never do it...too much trouble, and they'd rather complain. One of my favorite questions I like to pose to those who constantly complain is as follows: are you part of the problem or part of the solution?
Well...rust and all, my relatives who went on their very first cruise on the Spirit are biting at the bit now to go on another cruise! They didn't have a rust issue...they were in an inside cabin and LOVED IT.
When we were on the Jade recently, the hotel director said to all of us at the MG to call him if there was a problem - they are there to address any issues and correct them to your satisfaction.
Ciao,
WaWW

the response from NCL continues. Apparently Frank forwarded my email and pictures to Miami. I got a call today once again with a sincere apology and and explaining the plans for drydock. They never thought the rust was so bad.
To make sure I give the Spirit another try they are sending me something in the mail . I never asked for or expected any compensation but I am not turning it down. She indicated they were going to send one of the $250 cruise reward certificates but noticed I already had 2.
When I get the letter I will let you all know what NCL came up with. This is a one night CTN that lives on and on.
