| BERMUDA CRUISE 2008 We left Trois-Rivieres Saturday August 23rd and drove to Boston. A nice sunny drive and had a funny moment at the US border. The female officer had a very brusque manner and scared the ditties out of us when she barked out “where are you going folks” – after we told her we were cruising she got all smiles and wished us a good time, one of her colleagues standing by asked if we had room for him in our luggage ! We drove of laughing and commenting on how we thought she was going to give us a hard time.
We arrived in Boston at 6 PM at our hotel, the Comfort Inn on Morrissey Blvd and were informed of where to park the car for the whole week. We then had Chinese food delivered to the room and shared a bottle of wine we had picked up at duty free. Early to bed with dreams of the Dream.
Next morning (Sunday) we got on the hotel shuttle at 10 AM, we were the only passengers and the driver was a friendly fellow. We were among the first 30 passengers to arrive. We had to wait outside in line with our luggage for about 20 minutes and then a porter took them away. Then we spent another 15 minutes in another line up to enter the terminal, this line indicated Lattitudes but everyone was in the same lineup. Once inside we saw an interesting and funny woman to whom I asked if this was the Gold + Platinum Lattitudes group. She undid the strap (accidently hit me in the face with the buckle) and had Pierre and I sit on a very small group of chairs facing the check in desks. Within 15 minutes we were all checked in and ready to board BUT I was asked to go clear a suitcase containing a bottle of Porto - $15.00 later we were back ready to embark and did so immediately.
We were welcomed aboard with a glass of champagne and we went to our cabin to deposit our hand baggage, at this point it was around Noon ! We passed by the welcome committee and got a second glass of champagne to bring to lunch in the Sports Bar. After lunch we walked around a bit and explored the ship, we peeked into the Terraces dining room, we checked out the Bistro menu and I tried to register on Internet but no one was around to do so. Finally decided that I would stay away from a computer for the week ! For sail away we invited ourselves to share a table by the pool with a nice couple and ordered a martini, I went to the Pizzeria to get a plateful of fries (never drink on an empty stomach). I took a ton of pictures of the Boston harbor and skyline. After that we went to our cabin to undo our suitcases. CABIN 4009: we knew we had a simple porthole cabin and were pleasantly surprised to find a nice sitting area with sofa, armchair, table and 2 big portholes ! Only hick was that the shower stall was VERY tiny.. We had enough room to put away all MY clothes and room left over for Pierre`s also. We had to call security to have our safe opened and reset, many of you have also lived through this. My night table light was broken and when the electrician came to fix it I miraculously turned it on properly – duh ! Having read a few reviews about stinking and regurgitating cabins I was a little concerned, so let me tell you about our bathroom: our toilet refused to flush on two different days, our shower drain gurgled every day and on different occasions we ended up with all our shower water on the bathroom floor. I explained to our steward, Romeo, what are natural hot water springs and told him our shower acted the same way, we had to laugh about it ! These issues were quickly addressed but they were irritating none the less. Back to our first evening aboard, we had dinner in the Terrace dining room and tried to get to the show at Stardust Theatre but it was filled to capacity ! Off to bed we went !
Monday, sea day, I got up early to go reserve two lounge chairs by the AFT swimming pool. I did indeed go through deck 8 and found a quiet and shady area with 20 or so chairs as had been indicated by Shoreguy but I chose to go up the stairs to the adult (HA) pool deck as these Quebecers were sun starved ! We had breakfast at Le Bistro. Exceptionally on the Dream breakfast and lunch is available to GOLD AND PLATINUM LATTITUDE passengers (the hostess has a list of the pertinent cabin numbers) After a lazy morning in the sun we ate at the outdoor BBQ and I got P off at a rude man we decided to cut in front of everyone – saw him around the ship a few times and my first impression kept being confirmed… We did a little jewelry shopping, bought our usual ship souvenirs and changed for our next activity – the wine tasting. We had a choice between a talk on Bermuda or the Wine Tasting – no contest ! Wine tasting was very interesting once the bartender from the Martini Clinic stopped interrupting with his “advertising”. We didn’t go to the martini clinic at 3 PM since the wine tasting already led us to a nap ! This evening we had dinner at The Four Seasons dinning room. It was not possible to make reservations to any dinning room except Le Bistro. You got wait listed and called in the nearby bars. Food in the dinning rooms was always tasty but unfortunately luke warm only.
Tuesday we had breakfast in Le Bistro. Let me recount here a short altercation, when we arrived at Le Bistro the hostess had stepped away from her desk and a waitress took one look at me (?) and very curtly said “Madame this restaurant is only for certain special passengers”. She had not even asked us any questions and I had not yet had my cup of coffee – so I gave her a sharp lesson on “never presume”. She apologized profusely and I calmed down ! Our concierge, Karen Goedecke, made her rounds every morning in the Bistro to greet us all and ask if we needed her services. Karin was the most professional and attentive staff member we have met in all our cruising years. We did prevail on her to make all our dining room reservations from then on. We then spent the morning at the aft pool and watched the ship go through the narrow passage to dock at St Georges and be welcomed by the town caller and a canon shot ! We had lunch at the Bistro and asked for our bottle of RED wine which we had stored from the previous evening – surprised, aren’t you - this is when we discovered that all wines are stored in a refrigerated area, so red wine is ice cold YURK. Having had an educational wine tasting the previous day we were shocked to receive this cold red wine ! We then got off the ship and wandered about St George and bought our public transportation 2 day passes for $20.00 each, a very worthwhile purchase. It was a hot and humid day. We came back to get ready for the VIP cocktail party in the forward Observatory Lounge, we enjoyed the drinks and took an immediate liking to this very pretty bar. Dinner followed in LA TRATTORIA, a tasty meal and I had 2 appetizers of fried calamari …yum. At 10 PM we then went out to St George’s weekly craft fair which I thought started at 10 but in fact it ended at 10 L I was just in time to buy a watercolor print of a lighthouse and come back to the ship. I went to check out the White Hot Party on the pool deck and Pierre went to bed, I followed soon after. I filled in the breakfast room service card before going to bed.
Wednesday – phone call from room service at 8 AM to announce breakfast was on the way. We got on the 10 o’clock ferry to Hamilton which had a stop at Dockyard on the way. I mention this because I had a snorkel excursion that left from Hamilton and Pierre was spending the afternoon at the beach at Snorkel Park in DOCKYARD. This is when we realized that Pierre had to get on another ferry and return to Dockyard L So we agreed that at the end of the day I would get on the ferry to St George, Pierre would get on at Dockyard and we would proceed back to our ship. BUT surprise the ferry I got on ONLY went to dockyard, so we both had to go back to Hamilton. The next ferry to Hamilton now was at 10 PM and so we had to walk to the bus terminal and take a long bus ride to St George. All this walking had the advantage that we did not put on that much weight on this cruise, hihihihi. We were tired so we had martinis and dinner in our cabin J Do NOT eat pizza on the Dream – YURK !
Thursday – breakfast in the Bistro and went to a liquor store to buy a nice BIG bottle of Gosling’s Black Seal rum. In order to buy it duty free $19.00, they had to deliver it themselves to the ship. We then took the ferry at 10 AM to Dockyard and a bus ride to Horseshoe Bay beach. We stayed there long enough to take a few photos and to admire the SandFantastic sculptures. We left since this beach was so crowded and headed back on the bus to Elbow Beach. Elbow beach is just gorgeous and should not be missed. We left the beach around 5 PM to go to the Hamilton bus terminal and transferred to another bus taking us to Swizzle Inn. WHAT A FABULOUS EXPERIENCE !! We ordered a “souvenir shaker 32 oz” of the house specialty Swizzle Rum and a basket of homemade onion rings – yummy! We lifted our first glass to Amy’s health as she had recommended this venue. I had a great meal of Surf and Turf (filet mignon and giant shrimp) and Pierre had the filet mignon. OINK OINK !!! Meanwhile a couple at the next table heard us speak French and the fellow came over to speak to Pierre, later on he sent his girlfriend to ask us to join them after dinner but our sixth sense sent out warning flashes (can’t explain it in words) so we decided to go upstairs to the souvenir shop, bought a few items and made a discreet exit to the bus stop. Back to the ship for a shower, a stop at the chocolate buffet and an espresso martini at the Observatory lounge. At this time I have to mention that a wonderful group of Irish elderly people had a gay ole time dancing and singing almost every night in this lounge. I truly admired and envied their stamina.
Friday – breakfast in the Bistro (we took a liking to this). We took a taxi to Tobacco beach and since it was tiny we walked 5 minutes to St Catherines beach. We enjoyed a couple of hours there and had to taxi back to the ship as everyone had to be back on board for 11:30. We watched sailway from the Observatory lounge and had lunch at the Four Seasons dinning room with white wine to say goodbye to Bermuda. I went for a nap and Pierre went to the casino to make a nice withdrawal. We then agreed upon a late dinner and headed out to the Stardust theatre for the show. I went to take a few pictures of the sunset and Pierre went to reserve our seats, when I got to the theatre the show had started and I could not find hubbie so we watched the show separately. Pierre had a ordered us martinis so I drank mine after the show Dinner at Terraces.
Saturday – Pierre went to the pool deck early to reserve two chairs, it was a must on this ship as outdoor seating was scarce, there is no seating on Promenade deck. We had outdoor breakfast from the Pizzeria and spent 3 hours by the pool. The aft pool is salt water and 6 feet deep, with the motion of the ship you end up getting a bit of a wave pool, it is a small but very pleasant pool. Lunch in the Bistro and in the afternoon Pierre napped and I went back to read in the shade. Through out the day we packed our suitcases here and there. We capped off the day with dinner at the Trattoria and drinks in the Observatory lounge. Picked up bottles bought on board and off to bed.
Sunday – breakfast at the Bistro (for a change ) finished packing last items and went to clear NON US citizens immigration in Observatory lounge. We then went to meet Karin in the Stardust theatre at 9:15 for VIP debarkation (with checked in bags). Passengers who walked off their bags had an earlier debarkation with Karin . Debarkation was an extremely fast and smooth process. We had to admire and appreciate all our special perks. At 9:30 we were on the pier waiting for our shuttle which we had just phoned for. We were told 15 minutes and 30 minutes later the shuttle came by and the driver said he’d come back later as he had to go to the airport to take people. This was very understandable but what got my goat was the fact that he was rude about it and demanded that we move our luggage up ahead to another place for the later pick up. We no longer had a porter so this move would have been difficult. I went back to the terminal and got a taxi and we went to the Comfort Inn and got into our car and drove away. As we left the parking lot we crossed the shuttle and the driver did seem to be looking for someone – tough ! We got on I-93 at 11 AM and arrived home safely at 5:30
After we got the suitcases in and reopened the house we settled down to a TASTY pizza and a relaxing bottle of wine.

What a wonderful review. Bermuda is one of my favorite places to cruise. We have been there about 7 times and would love to go back again. The swizzle inn and that picture of rum swizzle ready did me in but it was really worth it.
Glad you had a wonderful time and it sounds like the weather was good to.

Glad to hear you had such a great time Fil! We also had a great time in July and are looking forward to sailing on the last Boston-Bermuda cruise on the Dream at the end of October.
We also loved breakfast in LeBistro -- though we never went for lunch. Do you recall what was on the menu? Just curious... we'll have to check it out when we're back on board.
Karin is such a great concierge! We've been fortunate enough to have her for a concierge several times on the Majesty, and then in July on the Dream.

I'll be honest and say I can't recall what we ate for lunch in Le Bistro, but I remember that we both enjoyed the meals.
Indeed Karin was a standard to be attained for concierges ! I wrote her up on the comment card !
Enjoy yourself in October

I forgot to mention in my review that on my snorkel day I had lunch all by my lonesome at the Hog Penny in Hamilton and loved every morsel, thanks for reminding me !
Hubbie and I also enjoyed a great dinner and drinks at the Swizzle Inn near the airport on another evening.
Guess eating and drinking is a favorite pass time of ours

The Swizzle Inn by the airport must be a new property? I am assuming they still have the original one, too? We got there by moped one day when we were going from Hamilton to St. George.
Now I am hungry for a steak & kidney pie!!!!!

Perhaps my description of where it is threw you off - I'm certain we went to the original one. The reason I say before the airport is because on the previous day we were on the bus from Hamilton to St-Georges and we saw the Swizzle Inn on the left hand side of the road just shortly before the driver swung by the airport. So the next day we just asked the driver to let us off at the *Swizzle Inn just before the airport*.
I hope this is now clear -

That would be the original. The new one is on the South Shore

Did you make it to the Swizzle Inn, or the Hog Penny Pub?
Yes, there are 2 now.
The new one is on the South Shore

thanks for the confirmation - with my sense of direction it is a relief to have this
