Looking at booking NCL Dawn for December 08 Eastern Caribbean.  Enjoyed one of the most relaxing vacations last yr while in an inside (deluxe OMG would never have survived in the standard inside!) cabin - nice and dark, smooth sailing!  So since we had such a great time figured that the Dawn being I understand the sister ship of Star which we were married on might be fun this year.  Have been to St Thomas a zillion times but never to Samana or Tortola BVI.  Prior to booking thought it might be helpful to hear some recent first hand experience of this Ship and or Ports from people I can trust!  Thanks in advance!

We went to Tortola when were sailed on the Spirit.

We did not spend much time on the island because we took a ferry to Virgin Gorda and went to the Bath's. It was a great day there. Beautiful beaches, caves to climb through, and great views.

Have a great time.

Can't help with the ports.  But, the ship is AWESOME!!!!  We've been on the Dawn 3 times (more than likely 4th time next Summer).    Link to pics in my signature.  OK, link in signature not working.  So, here's the link:

Samana - DR - not a lot to do there - but the area is quite beautiful, just very underdeveloped port area.  I believe the best thing to do there would be the beach excursion which you will only have access to through NCL's excursion.  Have read some very good reviews of the "beach party".  Whale watching, depending on the time of year could be interesting as well.  However, we haven't been there since 2006 so could be some improvements have been made.

Tortola - we did the Jolly Roger Pirate ship excursion through NCL - tons of fun, lots of free flowing rum punch with a choice of swimming with the turtles or being tendered to the beach for swim and sun time.  We are hoping to get back there for the Virgin Gorda excursion one day, however, there was tons to do in Tortola as well.

Totola - if you have not been there The Bath's at Virgin Gorda is a must see. NCL offers a Virgin Gorda Highlights tour that includes the ferry, a brief tour of the island , and plenty of time at the Baths

Chick on this picture for 70 more

Love your pictures, SG!

If you opt NOT to go to Virgin Gorda (sometimes a hassle, depending how long in port at Tortola), Cane Garden Bay Beach is nice!

A couple more from Virgin Gorda.

Picturesque view in route to the beach; Atlantic on one side & Caribbean on the other.

Beautiful pictures.

If I remember correctly there was 2 options for Virgin Gorda - one was by boat but you had to swim to shore and back and the other was by bus - but the access was a little more difficult?  ie.  climbing etc..

The giant picture above is making the thread almost unreadable.

There are in fact 3 ways to get to Devils Bay. If you take the boat/snorkel tour

a long swim to shore. There is a trail to the right when you get off the bus

that takes you to the Baths and then you have to climb thru the caves

to get there. There is a second trail at the top to the left that is an easier

walk to Devils bay.

I have been to the baths at least 4 times. 1 trip thru the caves was enough.

Last time down the trail to the left, back up, and down the trail to the right

Thus the pictures from both sides of the caves. We were only there a couple

hours but still had time for a morning Bushwacker at the Top of the Baths

Nice pictures. Brings back very good memories. We were supposed to go to Tortola and I was planning on returningto the Baths. However, Carnival moved our port to Grand Turk instead.

Wife & I went to Tortolla on Spirit in 2005. If you scuba dive, then you must check out the wreck of the RMS Rhone. It's probably the only thing more famous than the baths :-) Remember that movie from the late 70's "The Deep"? They filmed most of the exterior shots of the wreck there in Tortolla...def in my top 5 dives of all time.

The Dawn is a great ship. I don't think you can go wrong sailing on her.
