Our cruise adventure started off on the evening of 2/5 with the arrival of Fil & Pierre from Canada. They stayed the night and drove to the pier with us on the morning of 2/6. We had to fit the seven of us, and luggage, in the minivan. Our group consisted of me, Amy, Spencer, Liam, my Mom and Fil & Pierre. After about 30 minutes the van was loaded and ready for the drive to the pier. It took about 1:10 and we arrived just after 11:30. Dropped the luggage quickly, parked the van and headed downstairs. The new checkin system seems to work well, but the Latitudes line was longer than regular line. We did get a lower number, but since they had started boarding and there wasn’t a line, we didn’t need it. We were on the ship in about 45 minutes.
The Gem is beautiful and felt familiar to us because we’ve sailed the Dawn a few times. The Gem is laid out a little differently, but just as easy to navigate as the Dawn. We had lunch in the Grand Pacific after dropping our luggage in our 2 AFs and then proceeded to explore the new spaces.
We met up with all the other OGGs at the Star Bar to call Jim and toast the newlyweds, then went out on the decks for an unbelievable sailaway in NY, 60+ degrees, no jacket and a beautiful sunset. Dinner at Cagneys was great and then we took the kids to the welcome aboard show.
The first sea day was a doozy. After a night of rocking and rolling, we woke to 14’ seas, and 60+ know winds. It was hard to walk down the halls without bumping into the walls. We tried breakfast in the Grand Pacific, but it’s aft position was rocking much more than our midship rooms and some of our party had to return to the cabin. I went up to the buffet and grabbed some food and took it back to the room so we could eat. We had to skip the CC M&G, but we did make the Latitudes party (hey, free drinks!). Later that afternoon we had the first of 3 martini clinics and OGGs present were Chris, Jimmy, Fil, Pierre and Amy and I. 4 martinis later those who were hit with seasickness were on the mend. We did have a first at this clinic because they charged the fee after the clinic. One couple waltzed in, sat down, had one martini and left! We all got a chuckle.
The second sea day was much better and the ship was back to normal. Great weather, great seas and a fun day onboard. The boys played bowling on the Wii and were crowd favorites. Spencer loved joining in the trivia most days as well. Dinner on the second sea day was an OGG group dinner at La Cucina. Dave & Sharon, Pattie & Joe, Fil&Pierre, Deb & Win, Leslie&Pete, Ian& Vickie, Chris& Jimmy and our five were in attendance. We read Jim’s toast to the newlyweds and each raised a glass of Dom Perignon.
Ports coming up next…

Our first port was St. Thomas and we were taking an NCL excursion to Coral World. When we looked at the tickets that morning we realized the time of the excursion was changed to nearly 2 hours later, so we did a little shopping at Havensight and then got back for our 12:50 excursion. Coral World was pretty interesting and the Coki beach was fun. We snorkeled right off the beach and had swarms of fish all around us, it was pretty neat. Back to the ship and onboard a little before sailaway.
Our second port was Antigua and the extended Hogan family took a bus to the Grand Pineapple Resort for a day of fun, food and drinks. Chris&Jimmy, Fil&Pierre, Deb&Win, Pete&Leslie, Greenie&Joe, Legalsec(Kathy) and Chesquinn were all on the bus, I think it was 19 in all. Sean Beazer was our driver and was very courteous and timely, we’d use him again.
After overwhelming the young lady giving us our daypasses it was off to the beach and looking for drinks. It took the OGGs about 5 minutes to get their first round. Most of us found chairs on the beach, right at the entrance in true NY fashion. Pete and Win found some nice comfy chairs 20 feet from the bar and proceeded to have their first of many Wadadlis. Because the drink cups were so small we got a lot of exercise running to the bar and back. Buffet lunch was served at 12:30, and then back to the beach, or in Pete and Win’s case, back to the same chairs near the bar. Jimmy entertained Spencer and Liam with his sound effects in the pool for a little while and Leslie went shell hunting with Spencer, but the beach has no shells. What’s that all about?? 3:00 and back to the bus. It was probably the best beach day we’ve had in all of our cruises. We had dinner in Tequila that night, and probably saw some of the Oggs later, but I can’t remember. I’m finding a lot of holes in my memory, I wonder why that is?
Our third port was Bridgetown Barbados. We booked the Natural Wonders tour with Glory Tours and Stephen Smith was our guide. Steve tooks us around the island, answering al our questions and giving us a real nice tour from a lifelong Bajan. We stopped at Earthworks which is a pottery factory on top of hill with a beautiful view. We go a tour of the factory from a young man who, in addition to working at Earthworks, is also a member of the national Soccer team and a heckuva nice guy. Of course we brought back more than a few pieces of this beautiful pottery. Next we hit Welchman Hall Gully, it’s a nature trail that was cool to explore, but we didn’t have time to do the whole thing. We had lunch across the street and then it was off to the highlight of the day, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve.
As we were driving into the parking lot we got a taste of what was to come, a green monkey ran in front of the van. We walked around and saw turtles, deer, peacocks, crocs and green monkeys. No, the monkeys aren’t really green, that’s just their name. I have video of the monkey eating and they were literally sitting 2 feet in front of me and one of the turtles was bumping into me as I was filming. The peacocks showed their colors in an incredible display. If you’ve never seen that live, it is really amazing. We finished our stay at the Reserve by having the most potent rum punch I’ve ever had. It tasted like only punch, but 20 minutes later I really felt the effects. Luckily, I only had one. We finished our day by going to Bathsheba which is a beautiful beach.

Please fill in any details I've missed. I know we were constantly running into Oggs all over the ship and meeting up at night, I just don't know which nights they were.

Thanks Greg. I will add what we did in Barbados. Several OGG's went ont he Malibu Beach Break. Deb & Win, Chris & JImmy, Vickie & Ian and us. It was a beautiful beach. We all got to hang out again. Pete and Win went back to thier pattern of sitting and having Malibu Rum Coctails and Cigars. The rest of us enjoyed a day in the sun. Anyone going there beware of a strong drink called the "Sponge". That drink beat up me and Chris.
After the beach Pete and Win took a cab to the Royal Barbados Cigar Company. They cigars were rolled. The rest of us shopped and had free rum tasting.

Greg, I'm really enjoying your review! Weren't the lizards at Coral World something? I have a "few" pictures of them from our most recent visit there. I also loved the lorikeets. Next time we go to Barbados I'm going to have to visit Earthworks as I collect pottery in most ports. Sounds great!
I must have missed it. Who were the newlyweds? I'm ruling out the ones I know for sure have been married for a while.

I forgot about the Lorikeets and Lizards. I have some pretty good shots of the lizards, but couldn't get any of the lorikeets.
Greenie and Joe were married on the GEM 2/6 before she sailed.

Our fourth port was St. Maarten and this was a pretty quiet day for us, just shopping and beach. After shopping, I walked Spencer and my Mom back to the ship, then went back to the beach to hang out with Amy and Liam a little. I got back to find that Liam had been shell hunting with his new Aunt Leslie, while Amy had found rum punch heaven. Apparently, $6.00 buys some pretty potent rum punch in St. Maarten. I had two Caribs and back to the ship it was. On the way, I couldn’t resist the lure of cheap Corona, so picked one up for $1.00 and drank it as we strolled back to the ship.
It seems none of the OGGs read the Freestyle Daily because Amy and I were the only ones present at today’s port-day Martini Clinic. In fact, we were the only people there, so Armando (sexy A, as he calls himself) gave us a few freebies in addition to the ones we purchased. We were abandoned, but still happy.
Our fifth and last port was Tortola where many of the OGGs went to the Baths at Virgin Gorda. Chris & Jimmy, Fil & Pierre, Pete & Leslie joined the 5 of us. It was an early morning (7:30) and after a highspeed boat ride, we were in Virgin Gorda and boarding the safari trucks to get to the baths. Chris stayed up at the top of the Baths to guard seats for the late-morning Bushwhackers while the rest of us proceeded to the bottom. We were at the water for 10 minutes and decided to go through the caves to get the Devils Bay side. It was a little congested, but we all made it with no trouble. After looking at the scenery , most of our group went back for Bushwhackers while I stayed behind with my Mom and the boys so they could get a little water time.
Because I stayed behind with the boys, I was the only OGG to see the some of the dancers prancing in the water and posing for a group picture on the beach, alas, I had no camera. The dancers walked backed to the meeting point with us. I got back just in time to gulp down a bushwhacker and my free rum punch and it was back to the ship just in time.
The last 2 sea days, coming up soon…
