I'm a relatively new cruiser, having cruised Princess 3 times.  We're looking at a cruise for Easter Break, and are considering the Crown Princess (we've already sailed on her, and know we like her) vs the Celebrity Summit (I know nothing about this ship).

The itineraries are as follows (we already have our tickets to San Juan, so these are the only two itineraries we're considering):

Crown Princess
San Juan
At Sea (Easter Sunday - a pro for this itinerary, since nothing will be closed)
Barbados
St Lucia
Antigua
St Thomas
Tortola

Celebrity Summit
San Juan
St Maartin (this is Easter Sunday, so all shops are required to be closed - should this change my decision?)
Dominica
Grenada
Bonaire
Aruba
At Sea

What can you tell me?  What are your opinions??

Thanks!

Eyeyore,

This is difficult, because as an almost 8-time PRincess cruiser and a one-time

Celebrity cruiser, I still yearn for my Celebrity cruise experience once more.

Although it's been since 2001 for the Celebrity Infinity [sister ship to the Summit]

it still wins out in my mind because of its elegance and the wonderful food.

I've heard others state the Celebrity food is not what is used to be, but I find it

hard to believe that the food quality suffers that much, if at all.

But Princess has a good thing going with it's Personal Choice dining program too!

I think they're all great ships.  I feel like Princess might be a little more conducive

to children's activities and the overall ambience is more social and child friendly

than was Celebrity.  Celebrity is a bit more refined, yet not snobby either.

I personally give the edge to Celebrity and always will.

We're booked on the Solstice for 2009, but we're also booked

on the Emerald Princess for 2008.

Hard question. I've been on Princess probably 9-10 times and Celebrity once. I have no new Princess cruises booked, but do have another Celebrity booked.
I think it comes down to which itinerary you like the best. I think the ships will be comparable, as will the service & entertainment. Food will probably be a little better on Celebrity, although meals are pretty subjective.
I did not find Celebrity stuffy at all. I had a great time!

I think the two are more alike than different.  Celebrity definitely has an edge in dining and dining room service, but it's a slight one.  I find I enjoy Princess more.  It's less formal, and the frequent Princess cruisers are easier to deal with than some of the frequent Celebrity cruisers we have run into, who in my opinion are almost as bad (snobby and condescending) as frequent HAL cruisers.

I think either way you'd be happy.  Expect to spend a little more on board Celebrity than Princess.

As with most opinions we have 2 different ones here regarding the "snobbyness factor"on X.....I too don't find them snobby but I can see where if your dinner companions were older and X cheerleaders that could easily be ones impression....I like Dana's words of "more refined" on X than on Princess, I actually enjoy both lines (trying HAL in Jan) but my preference is X.

Like Dana, we enjoy the much higher level of service in the dining room on X than on Princess....one thing that is cool is the waiters are in formal attire every night including white gloves which just seems to make every meal that much more special...

If only Princess would do away with those gawd awful turquoise dinner jackets  :holymoly: they make their waiters wear It would go far to upscale their image IMO....

We do enjoy both but they are different products....:martini:

I can't comment on Celebrity, but my decision is usually based on ports and the ship anyway (and cost). I MUCH prefer your Princess itinerary and I've been to all the ports before, some of them three times. ;)

Did you make a decision? Which one did you choose?

We'd never been to the ports on EITHER itinerary, so even though the Celebrity ports looked a little more interesting, we decided to stick with Princess.  This will be our fourth Princess cruise, so it'll bring us that much closer to Platinum in their return guest program.  Plus, there's that little problem with the pods on Celebrity - we didn't want to be the one cruise that has issues.  And, we thought we'd try to get a cruise on the Crown without tipping over:shock:, so we're heading back to it.

Less than 120 days to go!!!

LOL!!!!!!!  Yes, isn't it great that our Mods aren't like Big Brother and allow us so much freedom?!  Joking and kidding around is what makes it so fun!!!

When I saw that avatar the other day, I knew I had to have it!  :coolguy:

Thanks, Dana!! There's a story about how I came to be using that avatar right now. I'll PM you.

My cats draw blood a lot!!!  I have a couple scratches on my inner wrist area from where I was trying to get one of my cats down out of a tree.  She went ballistic when I grabbed her and scratched the hell out of me. Now, the scars look like I was trying to slit my wrists!
