It happens!
First, don't! If you're touring the port on your own, this could easily happen. Keep your watch on ship's time not island time and return to the ship no later than 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. This will be noted each day in your daily newletter provided by the ship and placed in your cabin by your steward. In ports where you tender, give yourself even more time.
Second, if you book a tour through the ship, then most times the ship will wait for your return. If weather or sea conditions make it necessary for the ship to move out of port earlier than scheduled, they will make every effort to see that you are returned to the ship one way or another.
Third, booking through an independent tour operator has benefits in that you may find it cheaper and less crowded than the ship's tours. However, if you are late back to the ship from one of these, they are under NO obligation to wait for you. Ask for recommendations if this is your choice of tours. The good ones are well aware of the ship's schedules and will make every effort to return you to the ship well ahead of departure time. Their reputation depends on it. Again, keep your watch on ship's time!
Despite all this, you may still find yourself stranded. Contact the port agent immediately. This information will be in your daily newsletter. Carry it with you! You may be able to hire a boat to take you out to meet the ship and this could cost you some bucks. If it's too late for this option, you are now responsible for getting home or meeting the ship at the next port. You will need cash, a credit card and ID, preferably a passport. Again, this is going to cost you.
Missing the ship can ruin a cruise and put you in an avoidable as well as costly situation. Watch your time, have fun and get back ahead of schedule.

Yes, the most important thing is to wear a watch and keep your eye on it in the afternoon! Remember, if you are taking a taxi back from the beach to the ship, allow for plenty of driving time. On St. Thomas, traffic jams are common-place in the late afternoon with everonye trying to get back to their ship!
And, please, take a copy of your passport!!!!!! A lot of people take their original, but I don't want to take the chance of losing my passport, so I take a good copy.

| MY DH saw a drunk couple miss the ship in Cozumel. Though he said it made quite a show, I'm sure they were scared when they sobered up!

Always remember to take a copy of the ship's daily program with you. On the back is listed the ship's port agent & phone #. That is VERY important is you do miss the ship. They are supposed to help you meet up with the ship @ the next port of call.

good thinking Denise.
I usually grab a hotel card or rip out an address from something in the room, but that's excellant advice for a ship.
I'm usually forgetful of the time changes and that could be a huge potential for missing the ship. Our rules..... "we must be back on the ship for afternoon cocktails", and that usually gives us more than enough time before the horn blows...
Dont cha just love the horn blowing...... I can hear it now.

I LOVE the sound of the ship's horn blowing!! It gives me goose-bumps! Of course, if I heard it and I was still on land, I don't think I would like it as much.........

Yeah, that sound is not a good one when you are rushing!! We ran a little late in Cozumel once... we were only at Fat Tuesdays, but made it back just in the nick of time...

| I too love the ships horn. I love it when the ships are all leaving port around the same time and they all blow their horns.

We were on St. Maarten while on our Disney Cruise. DW was enjoying the beach while DS6 (at the time) and I were out on the jet ski at Great Bay. Disney's very clear and familiar horn goes off. One of the beach guys comes running over to DW and starts saying you need to go back. Your ship is leaving there is an emergency. You need go now, it leave 10 mins. Needless to say, DW starts freaking out a bit and can't get out attention because we are pretty far out.
Finally the guy fesses up and says he is just kidding. DW finally gets her heart to start again, we come back and have a good laugh about it. hehehehe poor girl.

| I've been reading about giving yourself enough time, on the Almalfi coast due to traffic. There's no where to take an alternate route, so you could be skeeroo'd. (unless your on a ship excursion)

jc can tell you all about the Amalfi coast!
We were in a port, can't remember which one, preparing to sail after dusk. There was another ship that had been confiscated and was being held in port by the authorities. Some of you may remember the story. The line went bankrupt or something. Anyway, as we left port, the skeleton crew gave us the three blast salute from their horn. Our captain returned the salute. It sent chills down my spine.

Sounds like it may have been one of the Premier/Big Red Boats ships as they were all conficated and held in their port of calls.

Ahhh, the Amalfi Coast! The roads are beyond unbelieveable. The roads have no straight stretches. The corners are on cliffs steeply sloping up from the road a two foot concrete wall on the other side slopiing down to the sea. The towns exist whereever there is a beach everything else is cliffs. On each corner there is a series of mirrors so that you can see around the corner. The buses which are numerous especially in the summer are thick taking tourists on tours of Amalfi coast. I would like them to eliminate tourist buses then it would be heaven. Anyway a car and a bus can not negotiate a corner at the same time. So when you drive you come out of a blind corner accelerate from 15mph to 35 maybe 40mph and then as you approach the next corner you have a co-pilot yell bus as he is watching the mirrors. You slam the brakes on and get as far right as possible if you are in the corner you hope like hell you and the bus do not exchange paint. At one point at a horrible traffic jam between Amalfi and Minori a series of tour buses were negotiating the streets which in that section are really slightly more than single lane roads. We literally folded the mirrors in and got up as close to the cliff as possible, and cringed while a bus creeped past us with a local directing the driver and us. Driving there is not for the faint of heart or timid. I loved it, but I am sure my BP shot up like crazy!

Heee heee... I drank my way up Hwy 1, and then again thru the Senic Hwy thru Mt Tamalpais Park to Stinson beach.......... I was totally drunk by the time we hit the shore. (hence the lovely pic of me plunked on the beach) I'd never make it driving on the Amalfie coast, but DH would love it!! He'll probably goad me into doing it!
I can picture the person riding shot gun yelling "bus", it would sound like the kids here yelling "car" while playing road hockey.........

| Hwy 1 north of San Francisco is just no match for the Amalfi coast road. Having done both, no contest. Along most of Hwy 1 there is a bit of edge usually on both sides, on Amalfi it is most cliff and concrete wall. Neither of them looks or feels soft. Then I forgot to add in the bonus stuff. Like crazy Italians on scooters and motorcycles driving as if the cars are only objects to miss. So you have to watch your review mirrors like a hawk and still you will have a O crap moment as one will sneak up on you and cause a minor coronary attack. The way they drive them you can't imagine that they live very long. Amazingly we only saw one wreck during about 12 days of driving in Italy. It caused about a 3O minute traffic jam driving back from Naples towards Fumicino and the airport.

I can't handle the roads where you have a major drop off just off of the road. Even though they may have rails along side of the road my ass cheeks draw up so tight that I pinch the car seat!!

It really is a rush, Gordon. Stressful, though requiring massive doses of wine and alcohol at point of final arrival.

I hear you on that! We used to drive through the mountains on some of our land trips and those curves were a combination of thrilling and scary. I wish I'd had a drink to get through some of them since I wasn't the one driving!

I was OK doing drives like that when I was younger, but not now. I have seen the roads over there on the French Riveira that nowdays, I just couldn't do. No way, no how!
