I tried booking a guarantee once, but then I just couldn't stand not knowing where we'd end up! NO I wouldn't do it again!

We've always booked guarantees if they're available.  We've never had a problem with a cabin.  We've ended up near the back, near the front and in the middle.  I keep reading things on CC about ending up with the noisiest cabins, the worst location of cabins etc but that's never been our experience.  It's always been fine.  We've paid the lowest price available for the minimum acceptable category and we've been bumped up every time at least a couple of levels in the same cabin type and on our first cruise, from inside to outside.  There's never been a downside for us but we're also not adamant at all about cabin location.

ML hit on it exactly.

If you don't care where your cabin is, then by all means go with a guarantee.  I've seen upgrades as much as 10 categories (NCL) from the lowest inside to the highest outside below a mini-suite.

If you prefer a certain location on the ship, book a specific cabin.  If there are certain areas you don't want to be in, but other than that don't care, book a guarantee in the category above the area you don't want to be in.

We're trying our first guarantee this summer.  With no kids on this cruise, we don't care where we are.

When you get back, let us know how it went. I'm so curious, but just couldn't bring myself to book a guarantee.

I've booked guarantees on every cruise but one.  Never had one of those magical upgrades.. generally just a deck or two, once like 5 decks.  I really don't care where I am on the ship, so it always works out for me...

Well, my answer would be no... but I don't think there is a crappy cabin on a ship, LOL!!  Seriously though, I have never been displeased with my cabin... have had some better than others, but always pretty happy.

Well, we dumped the GTY so we could get an Aft Cabin with a giant balcony.  For the record, we booked a GTY balcony and ended up with a mid-category balcony pretty far forward.  Not terrible.

For our upcoming cruise we could only book a guarantee or at least that's the way I understood it. So far I'm not getting antsy about it. It IS still 7 months away. I'm sure as it gets closer I'll be dying to find out where we've been assigned. This will be a totally different experience for me.

I guess it will just add to the anticipation.  We were happy with our assigned room, but decided to switch for other reasons.

I have always booked guarantee status up until May 3 when I booked my one future cruise.  9 out of 10 times I cruise solo so it's all about the benjamins thus I select 1A guarantee.  Some cabins I liked better than others but only one that I wouldn't want to end up with again.  That was 8208 on Spirit.  It sounded like a bowling alley above me for many hours of the night/early morn.  If I had been cruising the Caribbean, I probably wouldn't have noticed the noise but I was in Alaska and couldn't get any sleep because the sun never truly set.  Nevermind the blackout curtains my body knew there was still light outside and left me awake during the middle of the night!  :sleepy: NOT

Now for my upcoming cruise on Triumph I selected a cabin.  I've heard so much about how great the two 1a aft cabins are on the Triumph/Victory and Conquest class ships so thought I'd give one a try.  It's not like my 1A guarantee was going to result in a magical upgrade to a balcony so I figured I'd go with 2444.  And, I would never book an oceanview.  1A or balcony (if Alaska) but nothing in between!

Oh yea, if I do decide to cruise again with RCL, I believe I will choose a cabin.  I got stuck with a connecting cabin and could hear my neighbors through the door.  Luckily they only seemed to converse (and no :censor:) while getting ready for dinner but it was enough to turn me off of a connecting door cabin.  I certainly wouldn't select one of those if traveling with family/friends.  There's only so much I want others to know about me when I'm behind closed doors. ;)

Later,

Denise,

We've booked several guarantees -- and they went as follows:

1.  Celebrity cruise -- ocean-view window/upgraded to balcony

2.  Princess cruise # 2 -- booked a regular cabin/w balcony -- upgrade

to a FULL suite.  [Still trying to figure that one out]  and it only cost

$749 pp. - 4 years ago.

3.  Have booked 2 subsequent guarantees and got exactly the type of

cabin that we had paid for.

The last couple of cruises we've booked a specific cabin.

We've had good luck but are getting pickier in our old age.

On our golden Princess cruise last month, this was exactly the case with some

people that we met.  They were right underneath the kids' center and

said it never quieted down before 11:30 or 12 p.m each night.

Several people also complained about being on Aloha deck, the deck right

underneath the pools because the sliding around of chairs at all hours of the night,

and they collect the chairs late at night and the noise started up again at

6 a.m. when they put they set up all the lounge chairs again.

I think I'm still confused as to what a gty really is. When I booked our cruise, we booked category JJ (superior inside) on the Norwegian Majesty. When I checked online at NCL, it showed our cabin #3011 -- would this be considered a gty? We didn't pick that cabin, just the category.
Thanks

Your guarantee was for any of the JJ cabins on the ship. They can actually give you any cabin in that category or ABOVE, but not below. At some point in the process, you are assigned a cabin. If you see 3011, that means you have your cabin. Looking at the deck plan, 3011 is a JJ so you have been given what you guaranteed. I think the time frame for assigning cabins varies with the level.

What Al said is correct, as far as I know.
Whatever category you book a GTY in (say you book a category H), then you will get a cabin in catgeory H, or you may get an upgrade to a higher category room, like a D or a B. But, you will not get a room in a lower category.

So, when you book a GTY cabin, make sure you like the category that you initially book, in case you do not get an upgrade.  Upgrades are nice, but not always given. I have only booked a GTY once, and I got exactly what I booked, no upgrade.

Yup, Al & Denise have nailed how it works.  I've seen NCL assign cabins more than once with a guarantee, so that may or may not be your final assignment.

I've now booked a guarantee four times:

(1) Costa Atlantica 3/2005 -- booked a balcony guarantee, got a suite. LOVED IT!

(2) Norwegian Dawn 11/2006 -- booked a balcony (BE) guarantee, got a BA. LOVED IT!

(3) Norwegian Dawn 12/2006 -- booked a balcony (BE) guarantee, got a BE. Not quite so happy that time; got an onboard upsell to an AC, much happier.

(4) Carnival Victory 9/2007 -- booked a 1A guarantee, got a 4A. Will have to let you know.

After #3, I agree with those who say you should book the minimum you'll be happy with.
