You're going on your first cruise, but what is it like? Cruise Diva gives an overview of what you can expect on most lines.

I think the key is to have reasonable expectations before you leave your house.  Keep in mind that traveling nowdays is a challenge, and most likely, something will go wrong! :out of it:
Plan for a lot of waiting & bring a lot of patience with you.
Realize that you will most likely meet folks from different countries and different cultures and may do & act different than we do in the USA.
Just like if you were vacationing in a large US city, be aware of your surroundings and be careful. Keep your valuables in a safe, locked place.  Keep an eye on your kids and don't let them have free reign to run all over the ship at all hours of the night & day.  They are your responsibility, not the cruise lines!!!

I think it is important for first time cruisers to read their travel documents. They need to make sure they have the proper ID in order to board and they need to know exactly what extras to expect. I know I have read many first timers reviews in which they think the welcome aboard drink is free. They need to understanding the tipping system and know why it is important to tip.
