I am not a great review writer but here goes…

We flew into San Diego from Sacramento as we were traveling with a friend who lives near Sac so we decided to fly down with her instead of flying from the Bay Area.  All was good with our quick 1 ½ flight and we arrive in San Diego around 10:30 and grabbed a cab to the grocery store for vino.  On the way we passed the Oosterdam and all was looking well though they were coming off a red alert for Noro and were disinfecting like crazy…..cab waited with the ladies as I loaded up on vino and we were off to the cruise terminal…$20 with tip including waiting time..can’t beat that!

Got out of the  cab at 11:30 and was on the gangway at noon….all is well so far…. Got aboard and tried to take my carryon to the room even though it wasn’t ready but staff was VERY adamant about not letting me get there….Off to the main dining room for lunch as I was getting damn tired of lugging that vino around!

We had  a nice lunch at the back of the dining room next to a window giving us a preview of our aft view we would be enjoying all week. Finished lunch and decided to just sit right  there and ordered our wine and cocktail card from the wine steward and immediately got to getting some punches in the wine card as we waited. As I polished off my vino the cruise director came over the intercom at 1:15 and announced all rooms were ready and off we went…

Our room was FANTASTIC, it seemed to be a little wider than most standard balcony rooms as there was almost 2 feet of room at the end of the bed before the bulkhead and most others have seemed to be about a foot maybe a foot and a half tops this is when your bed faces sideways in the room configuration…..our aft balcony was about 1/3 covered and HUGE with 2 lounges, 2 chairs and a small cocktail table and still had plenty of room for moving around. Right next to us was the corner suite which was taken by one of our roll call members so we had the steward open the door between us.

Bathroom was plenty big and even had a tub, only previous tub we had was on Princess in a mini-suite!

Sailaway on our balcony and neighbors wrap around balcony…he had tons of appitezers delivered and around 20 people attended and about that many bottles of bubbly were consumed.  Aircraft carriers USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan were right across the harbor for a beautiful view as well as right next to us was the carrier USS Midway museum which is a ship I have spent a few days on during my alcohol free cruising days!

After getting quite a good buzz on bubbly we departed San Diego Harbor and things got a tad rough so one minute we were partying and the next everyone was bailing so dinner sounded like a plan!

I have sailed in and out of San  Diego harbor prolly 70 or 80 times and I can tell you  this one was my favorite!

More to come….

Do all cruise lines offer Prime Rib on sailaway dinner?  It seems so and since I love Prime Rib its OK with moi!  We had anytime dining and with the exception of the second night during formal night we got seated right away every night. Second night we did have to wait for 15 min but in the end it was worth it as we dined with the comedian on board whom we had also seen on Golden Princess last year….but I digress..

As I said I had the Prime Rib medium rare, thick cut and it came as ordered! I can’t remember what Gabriele and Karen (our friend cruising with us for her first ever cruise) ordered but we all enjoyed it and were seated with a couple from LA who mostly cruises Regent but grabbed this on a last minute low fare offer on the internet. We were envious of their all inclusive tails of cruising Europe and Tahiti on Regent but….some day…

After dinner we explored a bit more of the ship and discovered virtually ALL of the onboard entertainment was in one area of the ship 3rd deck forward….the nightclub, the casino, the sports bar, the show room, the piano bar all right there…pretty convenient actually..

A day that began at 3:15 am was starting to set in and at around 9 we decided to call it a night and turned in….I called the front desk just before turning in and signed up for one of HAL’S cooking classes they offer in conjunction with Food and Wine Magazine for the next to last sea day….our first towel animal ever, a monkey hanging from a hanger which was hung in the center of the room and was actually a little startling to see! LOL

2nd Day…Sea day…

Things were beginning to warm up as we made our way down the Baja Peninsula , we spent the day at the pool (2 pools, one mid ships and has retractable roof, one aft and adults only. Like THAT is an issue on HAL LOL)  Played in the slot tournament, and Gabriele had a 6:30 toenail appt @ 6:30  ßWTF…. but since she had been sick she didn’t have time for  her nails prior to sailing so I chilled in the Ocean bar while she did the Spa thing…though just prior to her going she asked where my tuxedo shirts were and we then discovered I didn’t bring em….grrrrrrrr…I volunteered to just order room service so Karen and her could do dinner but she wouldn’t hear of it…quick call to front desk and for $12.50 my room steward Su showed up with a freshly pressed tux shirt!

As I noted earlier we did have to wait with our little buzzer thing for like 15 -20 min but that was just long enough to get a martini and have a sip and were promptly “buzzed” to dinner…

Note: the BEST pre or post dinner bar is the Ocean Bar, VERY nice padded bottom and back bar stools and easy access to the dining room….

Dinner was King Crab legs and I also ordered a NY steak off the anytime menu to complete my surf and turf….Gabriele had the Beef Wellington and says it was the best meal she had other than the specialty restaurant Pinnacle Grill!  Had a great time dining with the comedian and his wife (she just retired teaching and this was her first cruise with him and was beginning her new career cruising for free with her husband! LOL) They will be back onboard in another week for 6 weeks….must be nice!

After dinner we went to the show, it was a standard cruise ship show.  The casino beckoned after that but we were pooped and turned in..

Day 3  Cabo….

Since our effort to get a  larger table on our balcony failed I put our room table as  well as our friend Karen’s room table together on the balcony so we could have breakfast out there and it worked out well!  Karen was in an inside right across the hall from  us so I didn’t have to haul it far!

Eggs Benedicht on the balcony as well sail into Cabo anchorage…PRICELESS!

As some of your may remember this is our fav MexRiv port and we even “almost” bought a condo here last summer so we were looking forward to our visit….tendered in, strolled the city and visited Gabriele’s favorite jewelry store but she was only able to find one of the two pieces she was looking for…more shopping for the ladies while Mike hung out at Hemmingway’s, a cigar and tequila tasting establishment…GREAT mojito’s too BTW!

All worn out we ended up at Cabo Wabo for lunch,  the tequila shrimp from the appetizer menu are too die for….order 2 with a Waborita and you all set!!

More strolling, shopping and never made it to the Melia and Nikki beach but oh well….tequila happens!!

Dinner on ship, nothing too eventful…women were tired and tequila light weights so off to bed for them and magic show and casino for Mike!

Day 4 Mazatlan

Another breakfast on the balcony, BEST room service menu I’ve seen, even steak!  Hired a cab to explore Mazatlan as Gabriele and Karen had never been there and then to “Tony’s on the Beach” for the best mea I’ve ever eaten in Mexico…$70 or so and we had 2 lobsters, a ton of shrimp, tortilla soup, and this fantastic dish called Steak Mochahete…if you don’t know what a mochahete is I’m sure you all have seen one…it’s the lava rock thingy Mexicans use as a mortar and pestle….still confused?  It is used to grind up spices and other things..you see them in Mexican restaurants a lot with salsa served in them, black lava rock kinda thingies…anyway the machahete is brought out with this mole’ kind of sauce still bubbling up like lava with steak, chilies, green onions and other things in it…freakin fantastic!!!  Along with some tortillas to wrap in in….after lunch the server “insisted” we slam a few free tequila poppers with him and who was I be be ungrateful!!!

Tony’s like its name says, is right on the beach and though it doesn’t look like much out front when you get out of the cab you have to go all the way to the back thru an abandoned  looking office building to get there but its WELL WORTH the trip!

Back on board we had a few cocktails at Oceans, met a crazy couple from Vegas at dinner and turned in….

Day 5   Puerto Vallarta

I must say we enjoyed PV MUCH better than when we last visited…..the construction on the malecon (boardwalk) was completed and this made the city much cleaner and nicer than on our past 2 visits…..

We have friends who own a condo on the beach and they were in town so they picked us up at the pier and we did the obligatory tour of town and then relaxed back at their condo and pool for the day…..

A nice relaxing day and they delivered us back to the ship late that afternoon so naps were in order before dinner……

Day 6  Sea day..Headed North now! L

The women had not visited the onboard shops yet so while they raided the stores I logged on to CTT and ran a short “Live from” thread and returned to the shopping arcade to find that Gabriele had “found” the bracelet onboard that she couldn’t find in Cabo…what luck! L LOL   I had my cooking class at 1 and it was very fun..the chef from the Pinnacle Grill held the class.  $29.99 and we cooked 4 dishes, ate them, and washed it down with 6 bottles of vino as we cooked….the class was 2 hours and there were 5 of us attending….the chef even gave me the last bottle of vino to take with me and as it is a bottle from the ship I didn’t have to pay corkage at dinner that night on it!  I had so much fun I signed up for another class the next day as well!

Hal doesn’t really advertise these classes as they only have them 2 or 3 times per cruise and it is limited to I believe 8 people per class and advertising would obviously create a lot of pissed off people..there are free cooking demonstrations every sea day but these are actual hands on cooking lessons with the chef…

HAL even has a special room sponsored by Food and Wine magazine for this these classes and demonstrations….they also use it as a movie theater but it has a full demonstration kitchen built right in it..very nice!

Quite buzzed after drinking, I mean ….cooking class… took a nap and we had reservations at the Pinnacle Grill that night….

Arrived at Pinnacle at 7, ordered a bottle of Napa Valley Bubbly…Pinnacle is a specialty restaurant featuring 21 day dry aged Canadian Beef and Northwest Seafood as HAL is based out of Seattle….very elegant dining room…..

We were promptly delivered a amouse bouche  of salmon mousse, mushroom pate and grilled herbed shrimp!  I had smoked bacon clam chowder as an appetizer and the ladies had salads…..Karen had the salmon entrée, Gabriele had the petite tenderloin (which  was pretty big) and I had  the bone in Rib Eye medium rare…sides included creamed spinach, au gratin potatoes, giant baked potatoes, sautéed mushrooms and a few more I can’t recall….Karen and I had the Crème Brule and Gabriele had Baked Alaska with cherries jubilee sauce that used Ben and Jerry’s Ice cream inside…

I have eaten a “few” steaks in my day and this Rib Eye was in the top ten all time..prolly the most tender rib eye I’ve ever had….

And the crème Brule came with 3 kinds….chocolate, coffee and vanilla….topped that off with the complimentary cappuccino and it was a perfect dinner  …and cappuccino is gratis in all dining rooms on HAL…

Too full to even consider a show that night but had a drink in Oceans before heading to room and relaxing on the balcony watching the stars and having a Cuban I bought in Cabo with a nice glass of vino..

Day 7   Last day…..at sea

Breakfast on the balcony to start the day, relaxed there for a while.  Stopped in on the computer lounge  to post on  my “live from” thread and wait for my 2nd cooking class!  This day we cooked several more Mexican dishes the chef wasn’t too familiar with so I kept helping and “correcting” him and we all had a good laugh so he just kept plying me with my vino to shut me up!   See..there is a method to my madness!! LOL

Due to a scheduling issue the cooking demonstration was scheduled while our cooking class was  still going on so we were raided by a bunch of blue hairs looking for free samples during our class and the chef was getting all pissed off cause we had paid and he could care less about the free class, he wanted to ensure we had our time…

In “typical” scooter rider fashion a few of em climbed up on the stage with us and asked if they could taste….I was cracking up (helped by my several glasses of vino) and the chef had to tell them to leave and that the cooking demo would be 45 min later than scheduled…so they all just sat in the front row and stared at us for the next 45 min…LOL..you KNOW I had to let out a few zingers as the time passed!!  LMAO!! Good thing Gabriele wasn’t there or she woulda been smacking me but everyone in our class were relatively young so they all laughed~

Spent the rest of the day relaxing and Karen and Gabriele did the aft pool all afternoon and came back complaining of chair hogs….on HAL??? Who knew?? LOL

Dinner was prime rib again and it wasn’t nearly as good as the first night….watched a movie and chilled on the balcony for the evenings entertainment….

Final notes and observations….

Mojito’s on HAL suck

Escargot (my fav) was marginal at best

Cabins were great except for our holey sheets!!! Did moths invade our cabin??? WTF??

Specialty restarant is awesome..we met one coupel who ate there 5 nights, they also serve lunch but we didn’t try that…

Lunches in dining room have a pretty limited choice compared to X and Princess…

We don’t really do buffets but I did stop by a couple of time to grab a quick bite..just OK..

Wine and cocktail cards are a pretty good deal…the cocktail card will get you well drinks and all signature drinks like mojito’s, pina colata’s and the usual foo foo drinks….cards will save you like 15% but you have to remember to carry them around….

We enjoyed ourselves but still prefer Princess and Celebrity….

Atrium and shopping areas were mediocre….

Layout of ship was good…..

Nice”real” teak decks and that was good for shuffle board playing! I KICKED ASS!!

TOO MANY rooms that just have chairs in them…not designed for anything other than reading and knitting!! LMAO..prolly due to HAL demographic’s!!

Very nice library, best I’ve seen afloat…..see above! LOL

All in all we had a great time but then again we always do…

Very nice review.. who knew that you could put thoughts to quill. And we know a little more about you.
-you love your wife and let her buy jewelery
-your sensitive side loves balcony breakfast
-you imbride in the fruits of the gods a wee bit...
-you like to cook (who would've thunk it?)
-and you were in the navy
It sounds like it was a fun cruise:tropics:

As we have spoken of in the past the 10 day HAL cruise that includes the Sea of Cortez would be nice as well!!

We will most likely do HAL and probably Oosterdam again some time if only because they are so convenient in California....We can't wait for some of the newer ships to get to the left coast...

Also hoping Solstice class # 2 gets put here but I think Europe is more likely so maybe Solstice # 3

Wouldn't that be nice to get one out here. We can only hope.

what a great review!

i am ROFLMAO at this entry.  i can see it in my mind's eye. too funny.  we had a large scooter contingent on our december liberty sailing too.

the poor comedian...he had limited material to work with due to the fact that aveage age onboard was...well..."dead."   (lmao...his words, not mine)

one of these days when I ride a scooter there will be hell to pay!!! :capt:

mojito in hand, of course.:martini:

(crap...now i'm crackin' up again having this vision of you barrelling down the passengerways drunk, on a scooter.:lmao1:)

Fun review to read! The food descriptions alone were amazing. Sounds like you guys know how to enjoy yourselves.

I believe that's a reference to A Christmas Story where the kid wanted a BB gun. ;)
