Grand Cayman

The only thing worse on a cruise vacation than Embarkation and the Family Formal Photo night is the dreaded tender!  It sucks tendering to the island and it sucks tendering back to the ship!  If I wanted a vacation where I stood in lines for hours I would have gone to Disney World.  We loved both Grand Cayman and Half Moon Cay but the tender made both a serious pain in the ass!  Getting off the ship on a pier can sometimes be bad enough but the tender boats should be sunk in a big pile today!  Hasn’t Grand Cayman made enough tourist dollars to build a freakin pier by now?

After getting off the dreaded tender in Grand Cayman we walked down the street to a dive shop so that TW and DS could snorkel for a few hours before the pirate adventure.  We found a place about a block away where they could snorkel a shipwreck.  DD cares nothing about snorkeling and I can take it or leave it so we grabbed a cab for an Island tour.  The only other time they had been to GC we did Stingray City and didn’t get to see any of the Island.

Our first stop was Hell!  A cheesy but at the same time interesting stop.  DD loved rock formation but didn’t care much for the weird guy that was dressed like Satan.  We hung out for twenty minutes or so, jumped back in the cab and was off to the rum cake factory.  She loved going through and tasting all the flavors of rum cake and I loved tasting all the flavors of rum.   There were only a few other tourists in the store so I got to taste just about all the rum.  It was about 9am so I was getting an early start with the rum filled pirate ship in store that afternoon.  After the rum we did a drive by of the new turtle farm and DD did not want to go in because I told her of the turtle slaughter at the end of the tour.  She freaked as we drove by because there were people coming out eating the turtle in a can that they sell in the turtle store.  After a few other GC highlights we were dropped back at the pier with Rum cakes in tow to look for the snorklers!

We went to the pirate gathering area to wait for them.  Just before we were to leave they came up carrying, you guessed it, another bag full of rum cakes from another factory.  TW announced how much better their rum cakes were than ours and I went with it mostly because I don’t even really like rum cake!

The Pirate thing was DDs idea and there was unlimited rum involved so my vote was yes!  We freakin tendered again to the pirate ship.  I must admit it looked very authentic.  As soon as we got on and in place, all the kids were asked down to be tortured for about a half hour as the adults drank rum.  They did pull one lucky dad out of the group to be tied to mast and tortured with ice water for a while to the kids delight.  After their little show they dropped anchor and we were allowed to jump (About 25 – 30 feet) from the highest part of the ship.  Kids and adults alike lined up to take part.  Our kids were a little old for the pirate part of the show even though they both took part.  I would recommend this trip if you have kids 5-12 and are in to pirates.

We tendered again from the pirate ship to the dock to get in a line to tender back to the freaking ship!  Have I mentioned how much I hate the tender?

Those dolphins were quite impressive.  The park was a well oiled dolphin exhibit machine.  Those poor little bastards pushed and pulled hundreds of people just the day we were there.  They did the kids pretty easy but there were some adults that hadn't seen a scale for a while at the end that were tough.  I could almost read on the dolphins face while comming up behind to push one...................................you have got to be kidding me.  I am gonna push this fat bastard for a freaking sardine?

Thought about it.  Even jumping in a cab from chank just to say hello.  Once I sat down and watched the kids with the dolphins and had a couple of Margaritas I never got around to it.

Personally, I like rum cake. Don't care if it's Blackbeard's or Tortuga.

Loved the dolphin swim at Chank!! Did you an TW not do the swim?  Did you buy the video that you'll never watch again? :big grin:

We did not swim.  We have both done it before and once was enough for me.  We did get the DVD.

Cozumel

Chankannab was the plan for the day in Coz. We thought about doing Paradise Beach to see Tom again but the kids wanted to swim with the dolphins so we caught a cab to Chank from the pier. We were there in just a couple of minutes from the ship and got the dolphin swim for a fraction of what the ship prices were. We got the tickets and dropped the stuff off on the beach and walked over to the dolphin arena.

Chankanaab is a great beach day in Mexico. It is really only second to Escaret of the places we have been. The margaritas are the second best in Coz followed only by the restaurant on the pier. The kids loved the dolphin swim as did thousands of others that day.

Cozumel featured the only real rain we had on the trip. It poured for about a hour during lunch but other than that the weather was perfect of the entire trip. We snorkeled and enjoyed margaritas for most of the day and headed back to the ship after about an hour downtown so DS could add Cozumel to his Hard Rock t-shirt collection.. Chankanaab always has plenty of fish and is one of the best places to snorkel we have ever been. TW got attacked by a school of groupers because of the strings that were on her suit. She panicked and tried to swim away but could not shake them until she got out of the water. DS was laughing so hard I thought he might drown!

The following sea day was much like the first featuring of course an adult nap! Carnival as always does a great job and we would not hesitate to to it again with the kids. The biggest difference of all between them and other cruise lines we have done is the staff and crew really seem to care. I mean all the staff. The are simply the best in this area in our experience. There are other line where the staff, especially if they have no connection with you as a guest simply ignore you. Some help you out if needed but act like they really don't care. I could not find a single crew member that did not at least act like they cared even though they probably really didn't.

Any pix yet?   Haven't seen the old girl since the end of the 90's, even getting to tour her before her first cruise.
