I get the impression that all this chit chat is meant to distract us from the fact that Bama, is dicking around and NOT finishing the story for us.
We will not be distracted Mr. Bama. Let's go. Chop chop.

We arrived at the Mason Hotel on St. Charles Street at about 6pm and checked in. It was a nice New Orleans kind of place. Just what one would expect. It had the gardens, the courtyard, and even the flags, the unique triangular shaped flags haninging down in the outside lobby area. It was the perfect place to get us into the NO frame of mind after a long roadtrip through the great states of Alabama, Mississippi and Lousianna. We dropped off our luggage and valeted the van for the week. After we dropped off the overnights in the room we jumped in a cab and headed for Mulates for a fantastic Cajun feast and some Zydeco dancing. I know the place is a tourist trap but we were tourists and I knew the kids would love it. We had everything from frog legs to fried gator which is the ultimate for those at the ages of 12 and 13 even if they don't really like it.. Jen even got an official Zydeco dance card. The old man who was the official Zydeco dance guy was quite a character. The only problem was he was so freaking old and so very slow that by the time he walked back into the crowd to pick out a dance partner and finally got her back to the dance floor the song being played was all but over! It was funny as hell. He repeated the same dance journey, song after song after song. He did not get much actual floor time but he signed a bunch of dance cards. The band was entertaining and we would do Mulates again even though it is a tourist trap. The red fish, red beans and rice and jumbalyia was fantastic even though a bit over priced but where else can you get all of that great food and an official Zydaco dance card for $150.00?.
From there we got into a cab and we were off to Bourbon Street. Sit back, relax and get a beer or a glass of wine, fire one up or eat a brownie or something………….because this is where the National Lampoons Vacation movies and our real life vacation really begin to come together. I sometimes wonder if this stuff happens to all families or are us and the Griswalds the only ones?
First of all Bourbon street and humans under the age of 21 do not mix. I don’t know what I was thinking but I wanted the kids to experience the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. So the cab driver dropped us off and we got out and started down the street of debauchery and retail voodoo mixed with some of the best musical talent in the world. I knew I had made a mistake when I saw my Son and especially my Daughter holding her hands up for the beads being tossed by strippers from the balconys onto the street. You might want to check some of the advertisements on the beads before the kids see them much like you would check any email you might receive from Planersedge. I also had a clue as my wife led us in a zig zag path through the street in order to avoid the many strip clubs along the way. I had only been to Bourbon Street 3 or 4 times in my life and what stood out to me in the past was the heart and soul of the music there. It is still there! There are many great Jazz and Rock clubs alive and well in the French Quarter in NOLA. A few of the really great Jazz clubs are hurting for listeners though. We stopped in one place with the best jazz gutarist I've ever heard in my life and we were 2 of 10 people in the place (Two premium beers will set you back $14.00 US which might have been part of the problem). I'm talking old school kick ass jazz guitar. The kind of muscians that you can almost read the story of their musical and life history on the lines in their faces. Its a shame. The Rock clubs were somewhat jumping. I got the feeling (and I hope I'm wrong) that the true music of NOLA may have been blown away forever by Huricane Katrina. The crowd on Bourbon Street in general was down 60 to 70 per cent overall for a Friday night compared to when I was there before the disaster!
It got to be about 11pm and TW was ready to take the kids and go. Greg (20 year old) and I was not ready to go however. After some debate I got TW and the kids a cab back to the hotel and Greg and I were gonna hit some clubs for a while.
We started out at this open air area with some great Dixie Land Jazz. Then we stared to head down to find something a little more electric. We found great music at almost every corner. After hitting 3 or 4 jazz clubs We ended up at a club that had an excellent progresssive rock band. I got a drink and Greg went on the floor to get his groove on. I never left my spot by the door and the last thing I remember seeing is Greg doing a double tooter shot on the dance floor. I looked away, looked back and he was gone! It was about midnight and I would not see him again until around 5 am.
After 20 minutes or so I thought he must have gone to the restroom or something. 2 hours later there was still no sign of him! WTF! I ended up getting a cab back to the hotel. We had both disgaurded our cellphones for the vacation wich was a mistake. Although he was so hammered he would not have been able to answer or dial one anyway. I finally rolled up to our hotel at about 3 am and saw my lovely wife standing on the street as my cab came to a stop. This is great I thought for a moment. As I opened the door to get out she saw me and I don't ever remember when I have ever been so disappointed. The look on her face was oh its only you, and she quickly said where is Greg? WTF again? I was the one who was where I was supposed to be in the club. I was the one who was able to get a cab back to the hotel. I was also the freaking one who asked her to marry me!
It seems she had got a call from a very lost Greg an hour of so before and she, the hotel clerk at our hotel, the hotel clerk at the hotel where he was lost, and taxi drivers throughout the city of NOLA were not able to get him back to our hotel. He did not have a clue where he was or where he was going. He did not even know the name of our hotel. I think its important to note here, that I was feeling no pain, and when I found out first of all that my lovely bride was not happy to see me and Greg was hammered and lost on or around Bourbon street I decided to have some fun with it. TW was on the verge of a full vacation meltdown and it was up to me to take her over the edge (which would not have happened had she been glad to see me when I got out of the cab). The hotel desk girl had already got things started by telling her about local gangs and serial killers so the it only took about 5 minutes with me there to get TW to get the Valet to get the car and venture into New Orleans to find her lost son! WTF! She had been to NO once before in her life and she was gonna venture into the French Quarter and find her long lost son. It seems while waiting for the car to arrive she decided that it might not be such a great idea and finally went back to the room. I had to tell the valet guy we would not need the car after all, when he brought it up. So for the next hour I waited in the lobby for the Prodical Son to return. It was around 4:30 or 5:00 when I saw the cab roll up in front of the hotel. The Prodical stumbled out, I paid the driver and we were off through the courtyard to the room. I remember TW verbally wearing The Prodical out as I passed out thinking we have had more adventure tonight than our entire cruise might bring. Oh Shit I almost forgot we were here for a freaking cruise!

Ahhh, I remember trying the fried gator in NOLA. Pretty good. Tasted like chicken. Bourbon Street and the French Quarter were an eye opener for me and I'm waaaay older than your kids. Methinks you are lucky TW didn't murder you before you got on the ship.

I'll take the hit for number 1.
But number 2 was not my fault! He is almost 21 years old. Should I have had him in a stroller?

My head was pounding as I woke up from my Bourbon Street adventure! TW was coming in the door with Josh as I awoke. They had been out for bagels and coffee. Wow, what I would have done for a cup of coffee and a couple of bagels with a nice Tylenol cream cheese spread. As I fought through the haze of my 4 hours of sleep I came to the realization were about to embark on 5 days of fun and frolic! That thought alone helped clear my head. I was about to get a dose of Vatimine sea and was as exicited as a kid at Christmas. I could sense TW was still a little pissed about the night before but she would get over it. We would be on the ship in a couple of hours. The taxi arrived, we loaded up and we were off. With a quick stop to get beer and wine (do not buy alcohol to smuggle in New Orleans. I could have got it of half of the price just an hour up the road in Mississippi. Prices have skyrocketed since the storm. Everything from cab fares to alcohol.). After we got the smuggle stuff the driver pulled up to the line of cars a the pier and told us it would be about a 2 hour wait from where we were now in line. We decided to get out of the car line and have him drop us off down the road as close as we could get to the ship. So out we piled At the RCCL embark) and the 5 of us carried and rolled our stuff about a half mile so we could beat the line of cars and buses. We looked like a mother duck and her family in a line all the way to the Carnival terminal. once we arrived at the terminal it was the smoothest embark ever. it took us less than a half hour from terminal door to the atrium of the ship.
I think its important to get on a Carnival Soapbox here. I am not cheerleader for any line but it seems Carnival takes more “shots” than any other line. I thinks its unfair. I know there are many carnival haters out there. There even some FOMTs who refuse to get on a Carnival ship. You guys are missing out. This is our third Carnival cruise and they have all been fantastic. Over all we like Carnival as much as an line we have been on. I would even go as far as to rank them above NCL in overall satisfaction. We have overlooked some things on NCL in the past because of the Freestyle concept because we love it. NCLs food and service overall don’t hold a candle to Carnivals food and service. Carnivals standard and ocean view rooms are bigger and the room stewards are actually friendly. That’s it for the soapbox.
The ship was in great shape it looked almost new. Weighing in at only 70,000 tons, it carries about 2000 passengers, it is the smallest we have ever been on. I’m glad the seas were relatively calm because we could feel the movement much more than on a bigger ship. It was refurbished recently. We were on one Carnival ship in the past that was neon everything which was ok but not really my style. Everything has been toned down a bunch with the refurbishment. The atrium was small but nice and all the clubs were around it which made everything convenient.
We headed strait for the pool area when we boarded. We always carry our swimwear on the ship so we can get in the pool ASAP. We all changed in the restroom and made our splash in the pool before most of the passengers got on the ship. The weather in NOLA was warm but the water was cold has hell. The kids jumped in first and told me it was heated so I jumped in. I went in a man and came out a unick! The water was almost as cold at the water we jumped into off the windjammer in Maine. After being called out by the attendant for playing chicken on the slick plank that ran across the pool the attendant decided to open the waterslide early. Josh (swift udder) thought it would be fun to pull himself up on the bottom of the slide as the attendant turned the water on. He was a little surprised when the pressure blew him back about 5 feet across the pool when it hit him. That’s all the kids needed. They wore that slide out. The water slide is the main reason we cruise carnival with the kids. That is all they need to keep themselves entertained for hours.
We got word that the rooms were ready so we ventured down to check them out. We had one ocean view and one inside cabin that were across the hall from on another. The luggage had arrived with all smuggled good still there. I have never had anything taken out of our bags on any cruise. So everything was good so far.
We went to a painless muster drill. We were called to the main theater and set there for about 15 minutes with our life jackets in tow and then set free. On NCL we always have to go stand up on deck in lines like sardines in the hot sun for what seems like hours. So far so good. Stay tuned for the Meet and Greet after the drill which included a Rock Star, A BAMA fan, a freelance writer, A karaoke Star and a couple of junkies!
