We've had some bad snow storms as early as October here, but I think the worst was the ice storm in January about 6 years ago. The city viewed from a hilltop looked like it was made of crystal. Reality though was a LOT of limbs down, power out everywhere.

Susie, you may have missed this as it was on another thread, but I used to work for a division of AIG a few years back. I'm really glad I'm not there now!

Good luck with the site!

Thanks...I am hoping it attracts new business.

Buf, I am getting nervous now. I looked up the Great Depression on the net and one of the causes (not the whole shabang) was that credit was given out way to freely and people just couldn't pay their installment loans. My grandparents built a house for $5000 and had a 30 yr loan and couldn't make the payments!!They sent my mother and her sister then 12 and 14 to work.My mom worked as a live in nanny for rich people in NY and her sister went to a silk mill.

At my bank the ladies had the jitters because one of our local banks heavy into AIG was rumored to be closing. They on some level were wondering "What's next".

Now they are saying shipping will crash if credit is not available meaning empty grocery stores.

A lot of people have been feeling the economical crunch for a while now. I sure hope it doesn't come to another Depression. I remember the stories my mother told me of living through that. My grandmother took in ironing and stayed home to take care of a handicapped son. Grandad worked at a brick making company. Only people with good, solid incomes weren't hurting back then. They made do with what they had, but it wasn't the best of things or times.

The costs at grocery stores are up due to the cost of transportation. If shipping causes the shelves to be emptier, we may have to learn things that aren't as common these days. Canning food while it IS available. Drying clothes on a line instead of a dryer. Alternate transportation or ride share to work (for those of us lucky enough to keep our jobs). We'll have to lower our output if the income and available resources are reduced.

I was reading the other day that the most common searches on the Web are how to save money. There really are lots of things we can do, if we research a little. I personally could save a few bucks by clipping coupons, going to the library instead of the book store, etc. I already combine all my errands into one trip to save on gas and we don't eat out but once a week, if that. We take advantage of things that are free or close to it for entertainment

I took a lot from AIG and put in a high yield MM Account for the time being.........now Wachovia may go down:shock: I don`t think that it will, may be bought......but there is irony in that ......no?

I don`t think that we will have to go back to the "olden times" a lot if this will play out if people don`t panic.

But then again Susie, the Bag Lady sanario may be in the future:hide:

We are doing what we call "The Sweep" too. Making all our errands in one shot.

I actually know how to can food or as my grandma said "Put food by". I did it when I lived with her and I did it until I had 2 kids and a full time job.

I never lived large....or as large as I could have. When you come from little it is almost as frightening to spend big on yourself as it is to have nothing to spend at all. I made sure family came first.

For a friend's sake, I hope Wachovia isn't next. He was interviewed by one of the local stations on all this "financial" bruhaha recently and that's where he works now.

I too hope we don't have to go back to the old ways. Who has the time? I guess we could do it if we had to, but I'd rather not.

I know what you mean. My mother taught us to be frugal so it's rare that I'll spend a lot of money on something for myself. The kids, when they wanted something expensive, were told to earn it themselves.

Same with my son. We gave him the world for Christmas and for his birthday but when he wanted something other times, he worked for it. He started earning money when he was 13 and has a great work ethic now to show for it:big grin:

Ann, you've done something very good when you instill a good work ethic in your kids. I was reading an article in the magazine we put out last month. I usually don't have time to read it, but yesterday I did. Employers these days are looking for kids who have that good work ethic. In our magazine's case, it was directed to working farm and ranch families. Still, no matter where they come from, the ethic is going to be helpful when they are looking for a career.

I think that they call the working kids Millennial? or something like that? They feel a sense of entitlement in their jobs, the bosses "Owe" them and they feel free to do whatever , whenever and get pissed when they are not coddled:nono:

I sent my kids out to work when someone was willing to hire them...young...pumping gas , washing dishes. Uncushy jobs . They didn't have to. Their friends didn't work.

Now they still work hard after getting great educations but they still have Mommy as the buffer. Between them and granite countertops.

I worry that they will never truly reach their potential until I am six feet under. After they spend all I have saved...if after this debacle there is anything left that I saved.

But they are nice human beings even if they had me for a mother. We do love one another.

I haven't heard the term, but I know what you mean about the kids feeling they are "owed". I don't see it much where I work now, but I did see it in other jobs. The good thing about my office, if they don't have the work ethic, they don't last because we don't have the time to coddle anyone.
