Unfortunately, DS is only 2 years away from college, and I have not saved nearly enough.  Oh well, that's what loans are for I guess.  He is considering Rutgers :rastabanana:, which will give me a chance to go back and ogle the way-too-young coeds.  :drooling:

That's great your son is considering RU! It is a really great school! My husband's office is literally right next to Cook/Douglass campus. I always joke that he better not be checking out all the cute coeds on his lunch break;):P

Oh, I am sure he averts his eyes whenever some scantilly clad young thing strolls by.  Not much to see on Douglass campus unless you like watching chicks make out, lol.:eyepop: (My BIL works for Rutgers, so I he tells me stories, lol.)

That's true! And Cook has a lot of cows and pigs, literally! So I guess I have nothing to worry about;)

Thanks for all the info! I haven't been to that particular Office but have been to the ones in Montclair and Ridgewood. Next time I'm up that way, I'll have to give it a try!

I actually almost bought a 6 of the Double Bag this weekend but got something else instead! I'll definitely have to try it now! Any other fall beers you'd recommend??? The stores are starting to stock up on all the Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers!!!!!

Not a huge pumpkin fan.  If you want to try a classic, try Theakston Old Peculier.  It is a strong dark English ale.  I brewed a version of it for the Sam Adams competition and won my category. :-)

Look for any ale ending in "ator".  These are all dopplebocks and are rich, malty, sweet, high alcohol brews.

Lastly, look for a barleywine.  These are the highest alcohol ales out there.  Some of my favorites are Sierra Nevada Bigfoot and Young's Old Nick.  MMMM good!

Not out yet, but look for Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale due out in November I think.  I had a full keg of it last year, and it is like a double IPA.

Celebration ale is great.

It's availabe now! DH is going to pick some up on his way home from work:big grin:

The Saranac winter pack is out. There are a few new beers this year including a vanilla stout. YUM:guiness:So far, I've tried the stout, ESB, and Belgian ale. All three were really good.

We were in Washington DC last week and I had a great Micro Brew at the Chophouse pub.

I had the wheat beer and it was awesome.  I also tried the Bourbon Stout which was good but not as good as the wheat.

The food at this place was great.  If you are in Washington near the Verizon Center you should check this place out!:drink:

Hey guys, this one is worth waiting for!

Double Bastard Ale

Appearance: Pours crystal clear, deep copper with a beige head and incredible lacing.

Nose: Hops, malt, more hops, awesome fruity esters, with hop notes of evergreen and citrus.  Christmas in a bottle.  Additionally, brown sugar/alcohol notes that strikes a vague memory of the last beer I had at last summer's beer fest before I started making drunkie calls. (Fair warning to all that this is one potent beer!)  As the beer warms, I get nice roasted grains.

Taste: Big ass hops (noble, northwest??), nice maltiness followed by huge bitter hop finish that stayed on my tongue for many minutes after each sip.  Not a huge alcohol flavor, however definite warming.  Hops and malt, malt and hops.  This is no feeble beer, and you better like hops - from the intense hop flavor to the infinitely long bitter finish.

Mouthfeel:  Oily, chewy, big!  I would puke this up on a hot summer day, but cold winter nights in the waning days of the Christmas season just cry out for this beer.

Overall:  Although this is classified as an American Strong Ale, for me this is this year's answer to Celebration Ale, which is frankly a little played out after me going through a full keg of it last winter.  It is a huge, complex, malty, hoppy ale that will leave your senses feeling violated and abused.  This is not as "big" a beer as the Santo Palo or Expedition ale, nor even Celebrator, IMO.  It is much more balanced so that the malt and alcohol are well hidden by the hops presence.  At about $6.50 for a 22 ounce bottle, it is not cheap, but if you are looking for a winter warmer, grab a bottle or two (if you dare) of this 10.5% alcohol beauty, give the keys to someone trustworthy, and enjoy! Can you tell I LOVED this beer???

Welcome back, Repete! We've done a pretty lousy job of keeping this thread going in your absense:hide:

Why thank you sweetie!

I have heard great things about Basil T's.  I used to buy homebrew supplies from the former brewer there.

Tell us about any beers of merit there if u get a chance.  Been to the Shop-Rite in Sayreville yet?  Their selection is dwindling, but still pretty good stuff.

If you don't have total wine near you, you should.  They have the best selection around.  Otherwise, find yourself a store with a great selection and make friends with the beer guru there.
I have made a few bad choices beer-wise (and elsewhere) but if you get a good beer dude you will make better beer choices.  Sorry, can't vouch for the personal choices resulting from your beer choices, lol.

Our best selection in Bham does not have many of these.  We have got Chechvar only in the last year or so.  :help:

Hmm, let's see. . .

The porter and winter brew were my faves followed by the stout. DH had the pale ale and said it was just ok. The porter had a hint of chocolate. YUM! The winter brew was different from anything I have had. Hint of licorice. Nice change of pace from the typical spiced winter ales. We've been drinking A LOT of Celebration lately!

I haven't been to the SR liquors in Sayerville. Is that the one you can see from rt 9??? I usually go to the SR's in either Marlboro or Freehold and the Wegman's on rt 9. All 3 have decent liquor stores but I'm hoping they'll open a Total Wines around here one of these days!

Thx for the update.  Gonna have to make Basil T's a destination one of these trips to Jersey.
The SR in Sayreville is off the beaten path.  It is on Washington Road at the intersection of Ernston rd., off of rt 9, but you def. cannot see it from the hwy.
I only know it cause it was local to me when I lived in South Amboy, but I suspect there are other places nearby with better selections.  Do yourself a flavor, lol, and visit the office in keyport.  They have the best draft/bottle selection around!

I've skimmed this thread a few times and can't comment on "mouth feel" and all that, ;) but I don't know that I've seen Old Speckled Hen mentioned.  I was treated to this ale in London last year and it quickly became a favorite for DH.

Of course my local "packy" stopped carrying it almost as soon as I discovered that they carry it!!! :finger:

I'm a big fan of the English ales...including Fuller's London Pride and Newcastle (which was replaced by Smithwicks, then the Hen).

Any recommendations along those lines are always welcome.

For those not on the East Coast, DH loves Fat Tire...but we can only pick that up when we visit the folks in AZ...

Are you able to find any Scottish beers?  If so, I'll ask DH for recommendations for you!

You might want to look for Bodington. Pint-sized yellow cans, a nice smooth English Ale.
