This brewery's beers seem to be available in the US http://www.harviestoun.com/home.htm  The brewery was started about 12 miles from us (in a town called Dollar!) by a guy who was fed up working for Ford (the car company) and who had always brewed his own beer!  DH really likes Bitter and Twisted, especially draft B&T which is available in some local pubs.  I haven't found Ola Dubh anywhere yet but will keep looking.

Dopplebock style lager

Pours dark copper with decent head.  Nose is pure malt with some alcohol.

Taste is malty, some roasted nuttiness, wonderful complex toffee and caramel.  Finish is some hop bitterness to balance the malt and clease the palate, with noticeable alcohol warming.  This is how to do dopplebock!

If not for the high alcohol content, 7.5% I think, I could drink these all night.  Be careful cause these will definitely sneak up on you.  Very drinkable - makes me want more!  Medium-heavy mouthfeel and body, so these will fill you up.

I agree... this one IS tasty!  :drink:

LOVE IT!!!!

My first thought was figs!  The aroma was very strong with spice and figs.  Malty.. slightly nutty, fruity.  Taste... strong with fig, which I love.  Slight chocolate, molasses flavor... slight roasted flavors.  Light... no real aftertaste except for the fig (which is wonderful)  Very clean flavor... would be a good winter beer.  Not sure why the fig was so prominent, but it's probably the reason I enjoyed this beer so much.  Left me wanting more...

Scott~

We finally made it to the Brauhaus this weekend! Great place! We sat outside (around back by the raw bar) for a couple beers and then headed in for dinner. We were seated right by the window and watched the sunset from our table. We had the Hacker Pschorr oktoberfest, dunkle weisse, and dark. We enjoyed all three. The service and food were excellent too. The inside bar looked like a great place to hang out, as well.

Oh that is GREAT news!  Now I must get back there!  I was just in South Amboy this weekend, but had no time for anything :(.

So glad to hear everything is still as I remember it.  We always insist in a widow table.  You cannot beat the view of the bay.  What did you have to eat?  I love the spatzle there!

Too bad you couldn't make it down to LBI this weekend! Chowderfest wknd is always a good time!

I had the sauerbraten and DH had one of the veal dishes. DH's came with the spatzle. Very good. We've never had them fried before. Pre-dinner they served a horseradish and cheese spread with crackers and fresh bread. DH loved this! The portions were HUGE and between that and the beer, I was SO glad my gym has a branch down in Manahawkin!!!!! That was my first stop Sunday morning:P

I didnt even know about it!  Darn!

Love the veal there.  I am getting hungry thinking about it, lol.  I love the way they do the spatzle, too.
And I LOVE that horseradish cheese and those funky flatbreat crackers and bread they put out.
I need to make a point to get out there again soon!  This is killing me!  Great time of year to be down on LBI, plus you can get some great deals on rentals.  I really miss the Jersey shore living in the DC area.
Thanks for the update!

Bell's Expedition Stout

Pours thick black syrupy with a decent deep tan head.  I could have been draining my oil pan, this stuff is so dark.

Aroma is rich malty, with a huge roasted malt presence, and a nice alcohol bite.
Taste, WOW!!!!!  This is Kalamazoo Stout on steroids!  Same creamy, chocolate-coffee flavors as Kalamazoo, but with a nice alcohol kick!  Definitely an improvement over Kalamazoo, but more like an apples-oranges comparison now.  This is a classic imperial, but with much more roasted character and less overt maltiness than those that I have tried before.  Also, very bitter finish due to hop rate and alcohol content.
Mouthfeel is thick, oily, chewy.  This is definitely not an all-night beer.  One is plenty, and at 10.5% alcohol, I would not last long drinking these!

At this high of an alcohol content, I think this will definitely benefit from cellaring.  I am going to put a bottle away for a half year and see if I can get some sherry character to come out and some hop character to diminish.  It may very well turn out to be the perfect beer.  At this point, the Santo Palo has the edge, but in six months, who knows.  Stay tuned!

Well, I'm no expert at reviewing beers, but have tried quite a few new beers lately, and this one has been by far my favorite, so I'll give it a shot.

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock
Poured very dark, almost black.  Not much of a head.  The aroma was sweet, roasted, malty, slight hint of dark chocolate...almost like caramelized sugar  (think sugar as it carmelizes but right before it burns, it smells almost burnt, but not quite scorched, it's hard to explain)

The taste... ah, the taste!!  Almost creamy, but not really creamy as in thick... just felt creamy in my mouth, not sure how else to describe it.  I didn't want to swallow it at first, just felt good in my mouth, felt like all the flavors were just absorbing into my tongue (yes, it was as erotic as it sounds, LOL)... slight dark chocolate flavor, a little coffee, malty, a little sweet, but not as sweet as the aroma led me to believe, pickied up a little molasses maybe, a little spice but not really sure exactly what... notes of fig, maybe raisins or dates??  It is slightly rich, but light at the same time.  Ever so slight alcohol taste... it is just slightly bitter, right before swallowing... After sitting for a bit, it took on a yeasty aroma.  Very slight, but very good aftertaste that left me wanting more.  It has so many flavors and each sip brings out something new... goes down great.  It's a significant beer... I really enjoyed this beer!!!!  I can see drinking it at anytime of the year, although last night I was a bit chilly and it warmed me right up.  Not a beer you want to drink fast... I enjoyed every minute of it.  This is definitely the best and most enjoyable beer I've had yet.  It was bursting with flavor and complexity.  Going to become a regular in my house for sure!!!

We went to the Irish Fest up in Weston, Mo. last weekend and tried some of the local brews which were pretty good. I sipped both the Festival Ale and the Cream Ale.

Wow, the festival ale sounds awesome!

Chris, Celebrator happens to be my favorite dopplebock. It is the first "real" beer I ever had, and got me hooked on big malty beers.  Great review!  (Sure you aren't a closet beer guress?):P

Don't you mean 5 close friends? :P  Just sayin...

Edit:   In that case, you may want to try the "Bare knuckle Stout" instead.
