| I am trying to help a friend track down his birth certificate. He knows he was born in the Bronx but doesn't know the hospital. Does anyone know what steps I could take to help him?

He doesn`t have to know what hospital. Contact the Bureau of Vital Statistics in NY.

Will they help me or does he have to call?

You can try, but more than likely he will have to call. Depends on the state and/or county.
When we requested Brian's several years ago he just had to send a letter requesting it. When we requested my dad's a few weeks ago, he had to have the letter notarized. Same state (IL), different counties.

Here is one place.
http://www.usbirthcertificate.com/google/
This is another.
If you or he is in or near NY you maybe able to get it at the Vital Records office much cheaper.

I just talked to my Mom who retired from working at an adoption agency based out of Brooklyn...and she used to contact NYC Vital Records (link above)
Your friend will need:
Name, DOB, Mother's Maiden Name, Fathers Name and Borough he was born in.
When my Mom used to request these she said that they took up to 6 weeks to come in.
Good Luck
