Any suggestions for both champagne or wine? At least for starters. How do I know what is a proper wine to order with certain meals? I would hate to spend a lot of money on a bottle of good wine and then hate it. And I like wine that is served chilled or with some ice, not room temp-blech!
If you like your wine chilled then whites are definitely the way to go - although a lot of people like their reds chilled. Merlots and Cabs just don't taste as good too cold however. We recently ran across a variety of white called "viognier" - not too sweet but very easy to drink. (you have to understand - I'm a red wine drinker - Cabs are my absolute fav!). Finding a white I actually liked was a challenge!

My number one rule for wine and food - if I like the way it tastes that's all that matters!
speaking of reds...I had some Santa Rita 120 Carménère last night...mmmmmmmmm
Paulie-what a surprise-I wouldn't have thought you to be a wine drinker!

Hee hee-I like your way of thinking! I feel the same way-I like it how I like it, not the way someone else says it's supposed to be enjoyed!
I always did like white wines best-but not exclusively! Just don't like it sweet-to me then it's like drinking a wine cooler, which I hate-

And I'm happy you're back and doing well! Yes, moving is horribly stressful-I don't ever want to do it again unless it is to a permanent place. I've been renting the same place for 10 years!
Thank you for starting this thread. I hope more people jump in here with good suggestions for wine and champagne. I know there's a fellow named JC who is pretty knowledgeable on this subject too, so hopefully he'll have some things to add-I think he is still on a cruise right now!
I prefer wine and chapagne that is light but not too sweet-however, a wine like Merlot is too "puckery" for me! Actually, I don't know if it's the dryness or the fact that it is rather strong that I don't like. I like wine such as White Zif, (I know-gasp!!!) or something on that order. Living in Milwaukee, I was always a beer drinker, but I don't enjoy it like I used to-it doesn't always agree with me anymore. Hate that bloated feeling from drinking it! Although I love my gin and tonics, and vodka drinks, preferably with cranberry or lemon, (no rum and coke or whiskey 7's for this gal!) I'd like to start experimenting with more wine and champagnes!
Always happy to oblige
Mama is delighted, & doing her best not to smother. Thus far it seems to be going well -- i'm taking him on our cruise in November, & our next closest brother, Lee, is coming too :) Mama isn't healthy enough to join us, but is vicariously delighted at the current unity evidenced by her offspring.
Moving sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux ... i'm actually considering paying the movers to pack my crystal & china, just so i don't have to this time. i JUST finished unpacking it all after our move in November! The fact that we're buying this place & it's bigger & all that should make me feel better, but right now, it doesn't ... i just feel sorry for myself!
Based on your stated wine preferences, i'd suggest you look for Lancer's at the grocery or liquor store ... it's nothing vintage or anything, & should be <$10/bottle, but it's yummy pink sparkling wine from Portugal & it's just delicious served nice & cold on a Summer evening with grilled chicken & some rice. It used to come in an opaque pink ceramic-style bottle, & is often stuck with the other "weird" wines at the grocery store (think Sake, Sherry, etc). The last time i was able to find it here, they had changed the packaging & it was more frosted pink glass than the original.
Also, Vouvray is a French varietal that is usually semi-sparkling & when it's labelled anything other than "Brut," you should enjoy it. We visited one of their vineyards many years ago when i was in France for a semester abroad ... imagine a bunch of 16-18 yr. old Virginia girls' school sillies getting hammered on samples of wine!
My idiot father lives in Milwaukee, but that's not your fault; he's a professor at the Tech School there ... very big into their wind-energy efforts
I will definitely check out that wine! And some of the others! I'm so glad people are getting in on this thread!
As for my name-it's Cindy Lee. No Cynthia here!

Viognier is my wifes fav wine....and I like you don't really care for white wine but I enjoy it too. In fact she just picked up a case of her favorite "V" this last weekend at our local vineyard when they had a huge party on the lawn to celebrate the ongoing construction of their new winery...actually it was called "Jazz in the Vineyards" event but I choose to celebrate the construction of the winery as it is the first in our county after the recent repeal of the draconian laws that forbade processing of the grapes in our county even though many good wines are grown here and it all had to be trucked outside the county to process the grapes..anyway..blah, blah, blah..If you want to try some awesome wines here is the web site......All of the reds are AWESOME and the "V" is great as well...

I don't know if they still have any of the 2004 Reserve Cab left but if they do, do yourself a HUGE favor and spend a few bucks and order some......and NO you can't have any of my 20 bottles I have stashed......but if you stop by I will share one with ya!
Wow, I didn't think anyone outside of Virginia knew abouit Viognier! This is our award winning wine:

If you have not had a great one, please visit northern Virginia and try one of ours!
(actually not one of my favorites -- I prefer a much drier Cab, but if you like a less-dry wine this has a huge following)

This info is great-keep it coming!
Most people think beer or dairy when they think of Wisconsin, but we have several nice wineries here, too! If I can figure out how to post links, I will do that, but check out Cedarberg, Wisconsin, or Door County, Wisconsin-both beautiful tourist destinations as well as having wineries that are popular!
