And here are the terms that indicate the type of sparkling wine ... these were posted at "that other place" by Dan40:
The sugar content of sparkling wines varies; starting with the very sweetest & proceeding in order of increasing dryness:
Doux (sweet)
Demi-sec (half-dry)
Sec (dry)
Extra sec (extra dry)
Brut (almost completely dry)
Extra brut/brut nature/brut zero (no additional sugar, sometimes ferociously dry).

Hey there! i know, i've been totally out of touch with everyone for a very long time ...
And, of course, it never stops ... we're moving AGAIN (married 5 years, this is move #4) ... i'm so overwhelmed this time i'm barely even trying to pack, preferring to revisit & reconnect with friends & obsessively plan our November cruise, which Timothy (baby brother) & Lee (one of the older ones) are going on too!!
OK, i'll admit ... having the groovey smilies RIGHT THERE is much too tempting ... i'll stop!

Yeah ... he ended up serving 60 days for that MJ arrest we'd tracked him down with when we saw you ... had i known, i'd have gone to visit him in jail, or at least sent you to make sure he knew how to reach me! Anyway, he'd dropped out 'cause he'd gotten himself hooked on meth, so in some ways it's better that we didn't find him back then, as it would have killed Mama to see him in that state.
Luckily, sometime around that arrest, he decided to straighten himself up, & quit smoking the stuff, quit making the stuff, & white-knuckled himself straight. He's been off the stuff for about a year now. I ended up hiring a PI to find him in Lakeland, as i wasn't sure what state we'd find him in, & after looking once in the trailer-park meth-Hell he'd been living in, i wasn't interested in playing Rockford Files any longer.
He can't drive, as a result of the MJ arrest (the only thing he ever got in trouble for, thank goodness!), so we made an unexpected marathon trip to Lakeland to get him to Mama's for Mother's Day, & i'm serious, the look on her face when he got out of the car was worth every hassle, every dollar spent, every mile driven ... all of it. Makes me tear up just thinking about it.
Anyway, he's working construction & doing his best to keep himself out of trouble & rebuild a life wrecked by 20+ years of drug & alcohol abuse, the last 10 of them on meth. I'm so thankful he never got caught doing anything dreadful, you know? Florida, & particularly Polk County, show no mercy to the cookers & dealers, & rightly so.
As for AllGeeteredUp's diary thread ... i'll admit i find her amusing, but am astonished it hasn't been relegated to the Floataway Lounge by now ... does seem unfair after the way they've treated our lovely Funnel Deck threads

Ah! St. Maarten ... Dutch or French side? We were booked to take my mother on a cruise that stopped there (she is a retired French teacher), but had to cancel because we're broke after 2 moves in less than 12 months, plus buying a townhouse in metro Atlanta, & Mama's health is not likely to allow her to travel next January
i'm planning to rebook sometime in 2010, i hope ... i'm gonna bug the heck out of you when you get back to hear all about it ... Mama won't fly, so i can't just take her straight there

Heatheranne, I am SO happy you found your brother! As I've mentioned before, I've already lost two, so I know how overwhelmed and happy your mother is, no matter what his faults. I hope and pray he continues to do well-
And I'm happy you're back and doing well! Yes, moving is horribly stressful-I don't ever want to do it again unless it is to a permanent place. I've been renting the same place for 10 years!
Thank you for starting this thread. I hope more people jump in here with good suggestions for wine and champagne. I know there's a fellow named JC who is pretty knowledgeable on this subject too, so hopefully he'll have some things to add-I think he is still on a cruise right now!
I prefer wine and chapagne that is light but not too sweet-however, a wine like Merlot is too "puckery" for me! Actually, I don't know if it's the dryness or the fact that it is rather strong that I don't like. I like wine such as White Zif, (I know-gasp!!!) or something on that order. Any suggestions for both champagne or wine? At least for starters. How do I know what is a proper wine to order with certain meals? I would hate to spend a lot of money on a bottle of good wine and then hate it. And I like wine that is served chilled or with some ice, not room temp-blech!
Living in Milwaukee, I was always a beer drinker, but I don't enjoy it like I used to-it doesn't always agree with me anymore. Hate that bloated feeling from drinking it! Although I love my gin and tonics, and vodka drinks, preferably with cranberry or lemon, (no rum and coke or whiskey 7's for this gal!) I'd like to start experimenting with more wine and champagnes!

Always happy to oblige
Mama is delighted, & doing her best not to smother. Thus far it seems to be going well -- i'm taking him on our cruise in November, & our next closest brother, Lee, is coming too :) Mama isn't healthy enough to join us, but is vicariously delighted at the current unity evidenced by her offspring.
Moving sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux sux ... i'm actually considering paying the movers to pack my crystal & china, just so i don't have to this time. i JUST finished unpacking it all after our move in November! The fact that we're buying this place & it's bigger & all that should make me feel better, but right now, it doesn't ... i just feel sorry for myself!
Based on your stated wine preferences, i'd suggest you look for Lancer's at the grocery or liquor store ... it's nothing vintage or anything, & should be <$10/bottle, but it's yummy pink sparkling wine from Portugal & it's just delicious served nice & cold on a Summer evening with grilled chicken & some rice. It used to come in an opaque pink ceramic-style bottle, & is often stuck with the other "weird" wines at the grocery store (think Sake, Sherry, etc). The last time i was able to find it here, they had changed the packaging & it was more frosted pink glass than the original.
Also, Vouvray is a French varietal that is usually semi-sparkling & when it's labelled anything other than "Brut," you should enjoy it. We visited one of their vineyards many years ago when i was in France for a semester abroad ... imagine a bunch of 16-18 yr. old Virginia girls' school sillies getting hammered on samples of wine!
My idiot father lives in Milwaukee, but that's not your fault; he's a professor at the Tech School there ... very big into their wind-energy efforts

Ahh, explains the avatar! DS and I rented a moped a few years back and explored the entire island ... what a beauty!
Have a great time there, CD. What stands out most for me were the topless beaches on the French side, and the obscenely low prices on Stoli near the pier. Both great reasons to go there. (Well that and being in paradise )

lol ... all sparkling wines from Italy are Spumante ... only those produced in the Asti Region are allowed to carry the Asti designation.
i'm not a fan of Martini & Rossi's Asti Spumante, which is what most people think of, but a good wine store should have at least a few decent Astis in the sparkling wine section ... and there are excellent Spumantes produced in the other regions of Italy as well

I would hate to spend a lot of money on a bottle of good wine and then hate it. And I like wine that is served chilled or with some ice, not room temp-blech!
If you like your wine chilled then whites are definitely the way to go - although a lot of people like their reds chilled. Merlots and Cabs just don't taste as good too cold however. We recently ran across a variety of white called "viognier" - not too sweet but very easy to drink. (you have to understand - I'm a red wine drinker - Cabs are my absolute fav!). Finding a white I actually liked was a challenge!

My number one rule for wine and food - if I like the way it tastes that's all that matters!

Viognier is my wifes fav wine....and I like you don't really care for white wine but I enjoy it too. In fact she just picked up a case of her favorite "V" this last weekend at our local vineyard when they had a huge party on the lawn to celebrate the ongoing construction of their new winery...actually it was called "Jazz in the Vineyards" event but I choose to celebrate the construction of the winery as it is the first in our county after the recent repeal of the draconian laws that forbade processing of the grapes in our county even though many good wines are grown here and it all had to be trucked outside the county to process the grapes..anyway..blah, blah, blah..If you want to try some awesome wines here is the web site......All of the reds are AWESOME and the "V" is great as well...

I don't know if they still have any of the 2004 Reserve Cab left but if they do, do yourself a HUGE favor and spend a few bucks and order some......and NO you can't have any of my 20 bottles I have stashed......but if you stop by I will share one with ya!
