I know someone here has a PBGV in their avatar (the dog looking thru the bars) but I can't remember who it is to ask directly so I figured this would get your attention.

My wife has discovered PVGB's and we will be needing a new companion for our 5 yo terrier mix (who actually looks a lot like a PBGV) because our 15 yo Sheltie will not be with us much longer.:(

I have a few questions....what price range are they in?

Do you know of any good PBGV breeders out west or Northern Cali specifically?:dogs:  I knew I would find a use for that smiley! LMAO!!

Are you a PVGB expert as in if I sent you a website from a breeder I found near me here in Cali could you look at the dog pics there and give me your thoughts?

Thanks...and I'm sorry I can't remember your screen name! :shock:   Bad on me! :sado1:

Dawson, you might want to send her a PM so she'll get the e-mail notice and know to come here. I don't think she's been reading here regularly lately.

Here I am - sorry haven't been on as much lately - DH tore ACL on trip to Hawaii, surgery on 5/14 - need I say more?!?! Between that and our Carnival cruise getting switched all around..

Anyhoo, I am no expert - we were lucky in that an excellent breeder lives near us when we were looking at that breed, so we have ended up with 2 very good dogs. I would be more than happy to give you her email address and you can "speak" to her directly. Yes I know there are breeders in Calif (the 2006 PBGV Nationals were in Sacramento as a matter of fact). I know some out there by reputation, both good and bad, so I think you would do better to talk to my person, she can steer you in the right direction. As a matter of fact one of her dogs is out there on loan to a Calif breeder, but I don't know the name.

I don't know if I am allowed to list all her info here, so PM me and I will send it to you - they are certainly a challenging breed (picture the intelligence of a 2 year old). We just retired our older one from the show ring and got him certified in therapy work, so he and I will be hitting retirement homes before too long. The other one (pictured in our avatur) is too much of a wing ding to pass any test that requires discipline, so she won't be coming with us!!

Mike,
Think of checking out the breed rescue groups!  You'll give a good home to a doggie that really needs one!

I had already checked those out before...problem is PBGV's are so new to the US that from what I've read there are only 3 or4 thousand of them in the US and none of the rescue sites I looked at have any..hell even all of the breeders sites I looked at don't have any puppies either..:shock:    Just my luck Gabriele decides to get the freakin hardest to find dog in the US..:P

I don't friggin believe this! I had just typed a long response and it has disappeared!!!!!!WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cliff notes: Not a huge rescue organization because reputable PBGV breeders want their dogs back if someone can't care for them. My breeder has one now that she took back after 4 years because the people didn't want her any longer (long story). So an individual breeder may very well have one like that that they would sell for less money than a puppy. Once you get the name of a reputable breeder, ask them what they might have available other than puppies.

As far as price - I would guess $800 and up, maybe higher on the West Coast, Juli can give you a better idea for that. Again it would depend on pet v. show quality.

Health issues you need to check parentage for - hips (dysplasia) and epilepsy and maybe elbows. If parents have OFA clearances, then you should be fine.

Lets see if I can post this without disappearing,grrrrrrr

Thanks again...I just got an email from the breeder:dogs:  in Sacramento. hahaha I used that smilie again!! woo hoo

They just had their 2 females bred last week so they are waiting to find out if they are PG...

I figured around $1000 or so and yes all dogs are more out here (WTF???) fortunately most of the breeders out here are not puppy mills though so maybe thats why we have to pay more...:flamin:

I was going to ask what a PBGV was, but you all answered my question. Nice pup you have there!

The call name of the female they have on loan out there is Bunny, so you can see if it's the same breeder. Sorry about the price, but as you said, there are only a few thousand in the country (with their howl, thank goodness it's not more!!!)

They will keep you entertained, that is for sure!!!

petit basset griffon vendeen

petit = small

basset = low to the ground

griffon = breed

vendeen = area of France they came from originally

since that is too much of a mouthful - PBGV or as my boss says, LPGA since he can't remember it
