We bought an LG set when we moved. I LOVE these machines! Instead of 8-10 loads per week, I'm only doing about 3-4 now. I wipe the rubber seal and door down with a towel after use and leave the door open. The laundry room is downstairs and has a door so the appearance doesn't bother me. The time is great too. I use the "speed wash" cycle and can wash and dry a load in about an hour, 1.5 tops.

We got rebates from LG and from the electric company. The Energy Star guide says it costs $9/year to run the washer. We've saved about $120/month in electricity and water, but considering how much laundry we do that might not be as great as it looks! ;)

We got the green set for the price of the white one because the dryer was on backorder and we needed it ASAP because ours bit the dust. For the "inconvenience" they threw the pedestals in for free. I was ecstatic! I wanted the colored set but refused to pay the price for it.

Lora, it looks like you and I have very similar machines. We also have LG.

I'll echo what others have already said here and add a bit. I like that my washer uses so little water. Now I don't feel guilty not throwing everything in together on cold and can break up into smaller loads. :P Rather than doing fewer loads I'm actually doing more and smaller loads, but taking better care of my clothes and not using as much water. I also LOVE the Hand Wash cycle. I've been able to broaden the range of clothing I'll buy because I can throw the hand wash into the machine. As for the dryer, I'll second the statement that the sensor is a really great feature! Just right, every time.

Some day when the current ones die :rip: Not sure when that will be. I use a lot of water and electricity but the washer and dryer came with my first house. In fact the builder took them out of a house trailer on his lot.  Last May they celebrated their 29th birthday

My 1988 stove will go first - down to 3 burners and the broiler went last week. No replacement pats available :(  :big grin::big grin:

We bought a front loading machine a couple of years ago after DD #1 overloaded the old washer with DGS's jeans.  In hindsight, it turned out to be a blessing.  The new one uses only a gallon or two of water and spins the clothes to almost dry.  But the wash cycles take a lot longer to run.  We're saving a ton on our utility bills.   ;)

We are looking too.

AND are seriously considering a Steam dryer with a water hose hook up.  DW likes to throw things in the dryer to freshen them.  Esp some of those dry clean only items.

Yeah do they work, and what is up with the whole silver thing?

Those are very similar to mine although mine aren't stacked - yet.  DH decided to surprize me by installing overhead cupboards.  Ummmm, not what I wanted.  Once I convince him to take them out, I'll have a lot more room.  I'm working on him.

The newer dryers use a lot less hydro.  We couldn't believe the difference in the bill.  I don't know if it's because it's more efficient or because the clothes come out of the washer dryer.

If they're going to blow smoke up out butts they could at least check their ad copy... they've lost all credibility. From the web site, glaring error highlighted:

The SilverCare Samsung washer has truly revolutionized the industry. This Samsung line of washing machines is an environmentally designed with a beauty that rivals its technological advancement. The SilverCare washer system is the cornerstone of these units, created exclusively by Samsung in response to increasing consumer demand for energy saving products. The drum of the washer is equipped with 99.9% pure silver atoms, widely known for their antimicrobial properties, that are electrolytically stripped of electrons and injected into the wash and rinse cycles. This allows over 100 quadrillion silver icons to sanitize clothing without the need for either hot water or bleach. When tested with just cold water, the silver ions killed 99.9% of tested bacteria, sanitized clothes beyond the capabilities of a conventional washing machine. By enabling sanitation without high-temperature water, the SilverCare Samsung washer can reduce electricity usage by up to 92%. This stylish machine is available in either a silver or champagne finish and boasts an extremely quiet operating cycle. The price is from $1,100 to $1,400. Samsung.

So, to recap:

 Maytag and LG...........mildewy smell
And Old Fridigdaire...........no smell

I wonder if this is something with the newer machines, since jc's is 7-8 years old.

Is the big advantage to the front-loaders that it uses less water?  Does it wash the clothes better?  I would be very interested in a machine that does good with delicates.  Doesn't some of the newer ones have a steam cycle, too?

I don't think so.  We have a Maytag that's not quite 2 years old and have never had a mildew smell.  Honestly, this is the first time I've ever heard of a odour.

Maytag salesman told we they added some drain holes under the rubber boot to take care of most of this problem.  But to be safe leave door ajar and/or run bleach in it now and then..............

We have a 'silver set' made by LG, and we get the mildew smell if we don't leave the door open after using it.

The smell can be so bad, that it gets into the clothing, and I end up re-washing and adding vinegar to the load to get rid of the smell.

Quoted from the above thread from Samsung...........

I guess the .1% it did not kill must have been the mold and mildew strains?????????

OR they did not test it with those in the load??????

The silver colour does squat.  My laundry room doesn't get seen by anyone but me so basic white works for me just fine.   As to whether or not it's a gimmic...... I'm not willing to pay a few hundred $$$ more for a machine that does the same thing.  Remember avacado green or harvest gold.  Blech! :vomit:

Beth, it isn't a silver colored washing machine, but a silver plated machine that because the silver is in the process of laudering suppossedly kills germs...

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #c6e1d7"This combined with the comments of some of those owning it that they have mildew issues, convinces me that it is a gimmick, but I am actually ignorant on the topic and I am hopeful that someone will educate me!
