I hope it's not too late to chime in, Coka!

I have an LG front-loading washer and dryer. MUCH greater capacity, and I'm not breaking my back bending over so much. (Get the pedestals.) Make sure you run it on the short cycle -- as someone else mentioned, regular cycle is over an hour, but that's just not necessary for most clothes and will prematurely wear them out. I ~especially~ like the "hand wash" cycle!!!

The only drawback is that I've had a problem with a mildew smell in the washer :vomit:; according to my web search, that appears to be a not-unusual problem with some front-loaders. I either add a little white vinegar into the bleach cup on each load, or make sure I swab out the detergent cups and seals real good after I use the machine, to make sure water is not sitting around anywhere. Also, leave the washer door standing opening after use until you're sure it's completely dry inside. Since I started doing all this, no mildew problem.

BeckyThane, I am learning it is never too late to chime in anywhere here!  LOL

Thanks for the information.  I read and heard about the possible mildew build-up.

At 5'10" I am definitely getting the pedestals...although my neighbors offered to give me handmade wood planks from their old set to use as pedestals.  My only issue is that the planks are 8 inches high and it might not be enough.

Hmmm, if 8 inches is not enough, then I definitely better cancel dinner with Bama...I have been hearing things...

I bought the Kenmore HE4 set last year with the pedestals.  I didn't buy the pedestals at first but went back for them because it's just too low without.  I NEVER buy Kenmore anything but I did a lot of research online and Consumer Reports also ranked this set very high.  Maytag almost went bankrupt due to the problems with their front loading series so I avoided them.

I really like mine.  Uses a lot less water.  Very gentle on the clothes.  High efficiency.  Very quiet.

By the way I'm not familiar with the Bosch washer and dryer but after much research I bought a stainless steel Bosch dishwasher last year.  Spent a freaking fortune on it and I'm really disappointed.  For the price I paid I should not have to rinse stuff like tomato sauce off the plates but I do.  Have to rinse everything.  Pisses me off.  Never had to rinse a thing in my old GE til it was about 10 years old.

I hate my front loader due to the mildew smell and I hate having to leave the door open to avoid it. If you are gonna get the front loader, definitely get the platform. I didn't and regret it.

I hear 'ya about the mildew. Once I get it, it seems to take FOREVER to make it go away. Lots of white vinegar in the washer loads seems to do the trick. I ocassionally add OxyClean to a load, and that may help, too?

Thanks for the tip!!!!!  I have been looking into getting a front-loader, but still haven't decided.  I'm a little concerned about the bending over loading & unloading.
And you have to leave the door open when not in use?  I'm not sure if I want to do that, either.
Tell me about the mildew problem!

What kind of machine do you have?

jc & Becky-----what kind of machines do you two have?

I have an LG washer and dryer.

The hand wash cycle has been a God-send! I am able to buy my prettier things and not have to worry about the hassle of hand-washing. And, there's a special rack to put in the dyrer so things air dry without being tumbled.

I have Maytag. I don't know why the mildew thing happens. But, I can tell you that after every load when I take the clothes out and turn the drum you can hear water rotating somewhere, but you can't see the water. Yes, vinegar helps but when it's bad, it's nasty.

Mine is a Frigidaire that we bought at 7 or 8 years ago.  We love it.  I have never had a single issue with it, and I have never had a mildew smell.  I do most of the laundry and dishes in the house, my wife does all of the putting up of laundry and dishes.  So, if mildew was an issue I would have noticed but I have a good nose for smell.

I need a new dryer, my old cheapie from 19 years ago is making all kinds of squeaky noises.  I was reading that LG can do a load of towels in 30 minutes.

Any suggestions?

So, to recap:

 Maytag and LG...........mildewy smell
And Old Fridigdaire...........no smell

I wonder if this is something with the newer machines, since jc's is 7-8 years old.

Is the big advantage to the front-loaders that it uses less water?  Does it wash the clothes better?  I would be very interested in a machine that does good with delicates.  Doesn't some of the newer ones have a steam cycle, too?

I have a new Fridgidaire stackable....and I LOVE IT.

The front loading washers do save water. Mine senses how full the load is and only uses enough water for that amount.

I have Frigidaire...I bought them 3 years ago.  I LOVE THE WASHER AND THE DRYER!!!

Once in a blue moon I catch a whiff of ??? - You know what a washer machine (or the clothes coming out of it) smells like if you forget to take a load of wet clothes out for like a day or so?  That is what I get, but not often and NOT a strong smell.

Mine senses the amount of water to the size of the wash load.  The dryer also senses for the drying time.  The clothes are much cleaner than they used to be.

I don't buy the High Effeciancy (HE) detergent.  I use Gain and use half of what you are supposed to use in a regular machine.  I was told that a tablespoon of detergent is enough.  I also use half the regular amount of fabric softener.  If you don't use the HE detergent, don't use Tide - Tide is VERY high sudsing.

Good luck with whatever you choose...definately get the pedestals - some of them can be used for storage too.

Wow, I have not seen this thread in a long time!

I love my Bosch front loader and dryer.  My hubby got a stand for both appliances and carpeted it.  It is about one year old now and I have no complaints.

After every wash, I take a paper towel and wipe the inside door and the rubbery belt in the front.  I use the paper towel to not close the door tight afterwards.  I thought this would be a pain in the rear every time, but now it is just a habit.  No mildew smell...no build-up.  The mildew gets built up on the rubbery belt...that is where a little water remains after each wash.  I have never cleaned the machine with vinegar yet.

Also...I bought one of those giant sized HE detergents from Costco...I am STILL on the same jug...almost gone though...a fantastic savings in detergent alone!

I have also saved money on electricity bill.

The only item I have brought to the dry cleaners in the last year is my winter coat.

The dryer sensors work great too.  I could have a cycle timed for 40 minutes, but the dryer knows if the clothes are dry before then and stops itself.

The only complaint I have is that all my other appliances crapped the bucket too...anyone want to know about Sears Kenmore Elite dishwasher (love it, made by Bosch company), SKE gas/convection stove (love it), SKE microwave/convection oven (love it), or a cheap Kenmore refrigerator (not too fond of it), then ask away!

I just bought a new W/D 3 weeks ago.  It's a Samsung front-loader in a beautiful shade of "candy red".  They are a lot bigger than my old W/D.  I am surprised at the small amount of water requred to wash a load of laundry!
I have been drying off the rubber seal also after each load wiht a towel and leaving the door open.  So far, so good!
