I don't think MAPQUEST will get us good driving directions to Valparaiso:big grin:.  Guess we need to start looking at alternate travel modes.  We could end up taking a wrong turn.

Nope, Google doesn't work either ... I have to figure out whether the flying distance is better from NY or San Diego (for semantics' sake for his nibs) as he can't fly for too long becuase of the blood clot he had in his leg. As a matter of fact, I'll check that out now ... I think a night at the Sheraton before the cruise is in order too. :yay:

It looks like we may be a couple of cruises behind you. Thinking of doing this route over Christmas/New Year's 2008-09.

We're booked on the Sun on the 23rd of November next year as well.

Flying from London via either Dallas or Miami (standby as I'm an airline employee) which is not going to be much fun.

Well shoot Cassie ... no, it won';t be much fun ... but I just found out that the airfare is going to cost be 2/3 the cost of my stateroom ! And is something horrific like 20 hours fly time each way. :shoot me::shoot me::shoot me: I can see trouble brewing.

I don't mind the standby so much (as long as we allow enough time) but my husband hates it!

We're cruising out of Miami this December as well but at least that's only one flight to cope with! (unless we don't get on the non-stop and have to fly via NYC - in which case I am not sure our marriage will survive until November 08 :roflmao:)

We booked this itinerary last Sunday, then began looking at the airfare. The cost for a balcony cabin was a very reasonable $1,900.  However, airfare from San Francisco is over $1,500! Well, we've already canceled the cruise and will wait for the Baltics/Med itineraries to open up next April. That's got to be cheaper, no?

Nothing was meant, just in shock!! We have to consider flying part of the cost of cruising. We live in MN and you can't get to any port without driving or flying. I am checking with friends that have recently traveled to South America and see what they know.

We're lucky that we don't have to worry too much about airfares (to the US and beyond anyway). We do pay a small service charge but the taxes out of the UK to the US and return alone are around £120 ($240) which is approx double the service charge.

We'll probably stay at the Sheraton for a couple of nights before the cruise as well. One disadvantage of standby travel is allowing extra travel days, just in case.

With some flex, we want to travel at least two days before we are scheduled to leave. Living in Minnesota, we are known for our weather to change within minutes. Clear skies to a blizzard in a short time.

Do you know anything about transfers from Santiago?  I was going to wait until much nearer the time to find out but wonder if you've done any investigating?

Nothing yet. Have had no time to truly investigate the cruise other than searching for flights. Heard from our daughter, they had friends do this cruise and said as we cruise around the Horn, we can see Antarctica. We are excited to do this cruise.

We can't wait to cruise around the horn - we have heard you can see Antarctica but l think it depends on the weather which can be very changeable in that area.

I'm hoping we don't get any rough seas (my husband however hopes we do!)

We talked to Captain Svodness, Master of the Pearl, in April and he loved this cruise. He has been the Captain on a ship that did this cruise and said they had 100 foot waves. Dave and I both are excited as we would love it.
