I am taking my tranquilizers and anti-anxiety pills with my wine (JUST KIDDING !!!) thinking about the airfare & airtime to have this beautiful opportunity. But as for rough seas, I get sick anywhere, anytime and sweat my Meclizine 25 mg 3-4 times a day starting a day before the trip (air, limo or otherwise). Getting your MD to Rx it is MUCH cheaper than trying to by Bonine OTC which doesn't work as well for me. Dramamine doesn't touch me.

We talked to Captain Svodness, Master of the Pearl, in April and he loved this cruise. He has been the Captain on a ship that did this cruise and said they had 100 foot waves. Dave and I both are excited as we would love it.

My husband (also a David) would love 100ft waves - I on the other hand would probably be confined to the bathroom in the cabin (I must remember to pack ginger capsules on this one :big grin:)

I'm not sure if they are available in the UK - most travel sickness tablets can be bought over the counter anyway.   I'll probably stick with the ginger and hope for the best.

I've not had any problems on any other cruises so I might be OK anyway. We're in the Caribbean at the beginning of December so I'll see how that goes (I have heard it can be suprisingly rough)

I buy meclizine, 50mg, over the counter in 100's bottle for under $7 at Wally World and Target.

Rough seas are pretty much guaranteed on this itinerary, particularly around the Cape. But if you're fortunate, it won't last long.

Flying from London via either Dallas or Miami (standby as I'm an airline employee) which is not going to be much fun.

Tell secrets please. Dave says it like paying for torturous treatment!

What do you mean?

Nothing was meant, just in shock!! We have to consider flying part of the cost of cruising. We live in MN and you can't get to any port without driving or flying. I am checking with friends that have recently traveled to South America and see what they know.

We're lucky that we don't have to worry too much about airfares (to the US and beyond anyway). We do pay a small service charge but the taxes out of the UK to the US and return alone are around £120 ($240) which is approx double the service charge.

We'll probably stay at the Sheraton for a couple of nights before the cruise as well. One disadvantage of standby travel is allowing extra travel days, just in case.

With some flex, we want to travel at least two days before we are scheduled to leave. Living in Minnesota, we are known for our weather to change within minutes. Clear skies to a blizzard in a short time.

I work with a number of people who travel to Santiago on business. It is supposed to be a spectacular city and area; hope you'll be able to spend some time there.

We were hoping to do this cruise after March 1, when the air miles required for South America drop from 60,000 to 40,000. But alas, that won't work with our work schedules.

Good morning Cassie, Sharon, & Dave and what a London-y kind of day it is here in Greenwich. I am feeling ague-y at the moment so will retire back to bed and put my neck in traction over a pillow. Boring. I'm sipping coffee. That's a liquid so I should start to lose weight really soon. Next up will be wine and that might be good for my heart.

Not sure what a London-y kind of day is but in London, it's bright, sunny and warm (unlike most of the summer!).

Hope you are feeling better - and yes, wine is excellent for the heart - think I might just open a bottle :big grin:

Itchy Feet ... forgive my inane stupidity but is that 40,000 1 way or round trip ? and is that March, 2008 ? and is that all airlines ? Thanks Tink

Tink - For AA, it's 40,000 miles off peak and 60,000 peak for economy roundtrip from US to (what is called) Deep S.America.

Off-peak is 01 Mar - 31 May and 16 Aug - 30 Nov. Can't comment on other airlines though.

Actually it's all on the AA website ;) but I don't think it's very user friendly.

Searching for fares today, I went to Delta, NWA, UAL, Air Trans, AA, US Air. Out of all of those the most user friendly was UAL.

Nothing to forgive! Others have already answered: it's round-trip on American Airlines, and I don't know about all airlines, but don't they usually have the same mileage requirements?

When we went to Brazil, we saved a bundle going from Chicago-Manaus and Rio-Chicago by waiting until after March 1. I think those tickets were about $1,500 each and we only paid a few bucks in service fees.

AA's website does suck. They could do a few minor things to really improve usability.

That's one good thing - I rarely use airline websites.  Our own internal system is far better.

Every time I look at that photo of your dog, Cassie, I just want to get on my knees and hug him or her.

Thanks - She's no longer with us unfortunately but I still miss her.  She was called Cassie which is where I got my login name from. :big grin: (I'm not really a Cassie). She loved cuddles and everyone loved her.

We don't have a dog at the moment which I hate but when we win the lottery and I give up work (or if I can persuade my husband to take a dog to his office) then we'll get another one immediately.

Can I join in please :flowers:  We're heading to South America in March 08 on the Dream so different ship but same ports of call.

Having read through this thread I would agree - cheap cruise, expensive flights.  We're flying with Air France from Scotland via CDG to Buenos Aires as we're doing an east to west cruise.  I haven't found a huge amount of info on CTT about South America but I have read that penguin tours book up very quickly so we've booked 3.  My thinking was - book all that are available - they can always be cancelled and ports are missed at times due to poor weather conditions.  I think all 3 might be a bit of overkill but I'll look more closely later.

That's a good point about booking the excursions early.  I can't wait to see the penguins.

I've seen the fairy penguins in Australia and they were so cute.
