No luck with priceline. I went up to $100 on 3 star....Nancy, It looks like you timed it very nice.
For those looking to book a car with Avis in Skagway, they have opened up the rates for May 28. Make sure you book early.

I just went to Avis.com. I usually just book it online and then call them when it gets closer to verify it.
I did try a bunch of AWD codes but couldn't get any of them to work. If you have any luck with getting a discount code to work then I would be interested.Last edited on Mon Sep 17th, 2007 02:23 pm by AD Peterson

Thanks for the "heads-up", Jeff.
Do you mind telling me what rate you were quoted? It came up with a base price of $89 for me plus fees & extra liability was $114.41. That seems pretty high to me since in 2006 it was under $65!

Same problem with rate. I tried everything I could to get a rate reduction with no luck. I decided to just go ahead and book and see if some codes work later on.

I'm looking for codes right now, how can you tell if they work or not? On my screen it says it won't factor it in until at the rental counter?

I found some codes at mousesavers.com & flyertalk.com. From past exsperience, if the code applies it should show up online.
I am confused by the rental counter statement.

Jeff,
We have had this same problem with Avis. We have three free weekend rentals and can not use them because the codes will not calculate the rate if you need the car longer. They say it will calculate at the counter. I finally called the avis rental counter at our airport and managed to get the discounted rates from the counter person there.

Hi Linda:
Thanks for the information. I will try to find a good discount code and call them to see if they will adjust the rate.
You might of told me but have you decided what you are doing in Skagway?
Take Care,
Jeff

Craig is going to do the drive. His hobby is photography so he wants to stop and take pictures along the way. I am not sure what Alison and I will do. Sometimes I get sick on car rides like this and I do not want to ruin his day. He is perfectly content doing this alone. Do you have any suggestions for us.

The only thing I have done in Skagway is the train & car trip. Sandy might have done something else on one of her trips.
Craig will love the photo oppurtunities on this trip. Make sure he prints out Murray's mile-marker guide. I'm sure we will be running into him on this excursion.
Take Care,
Jeff

Hey nancyfancy,
I don't think anyone answered this question about what to do in Juneau so I will tell you what we did in May, our first Alaska cruise. We took the NCL Mendenhall Glacier/City Tour and loved it. Mendenhall Glacier was one of my favorite sights on this cruise. I thought it was just beautiful. This next year, we are going to take a whale watching tour based on recommendations from others so I doubt you will go wrong either way. Just wanted you to know that the NCL tour was great.

Hi Everyone,
Well, we now have cabins on the port side. Our TA messed up somehow, and now we have new cabins. I won't be unhappy with these, but it makes me worry about things with him.
Anyway, does anyone know why I don't get notification of posts on here like I do on cruisecritic? I know there is a place at the bottom of the thead to NOT get updates, but I don't get any at all. I have to come in here when I remember. Geez, not good for seniors, lol.
Talk to y'all again soon.
Katie

Hi Katie:
Sorry for your troubles with your TA. That can be fustrating. I am kind of a control freak and used to handle everything myself. Based on a recommendation from a good friend who I sailed with this year, I switched over to her TA. So far she has saved me some money and has been a pleasure to work with.
I have bugged her so much that she tried to recruit me as TA myself.
Not sure why you are not getting email notifications. They work very nicely for me. My first suggestion would be to check to make sure under my account->preferences that it is selected. If this is selected, then I would post your question in the technical questions area at: http://www.cruisetraveltalk.com/forum33/ I'm sure someone here will help you get that working.
Regards,
Jeff

Hey Brunolvr,
Just out of curiosity, what month do you feel is the most scenic as far as the Alaska cruises go. We went in May this year but are going in July next year because my brother and SIL think they want to see the salmon run. We've already booked it but just wondered which month was your favorite.

I can answer this for you. The absolute best time to visit Alaska is 05/25/2008. So get busy switching them reservations.

I've been trying to change everyone's minds (especially since it is about $400 cheaper).......but they're having none of it. Sorry bud. I keep reading about how the salmon stink and am wondering why we would want to partake of that!!

Hi Randie! As far as the "most scenic" time to go to Alaska, I'd pick late May or early June. There is still snow on the mountain tops and everything is fresh and new before the bigger crowds of summer arrive.
Our favorite time is the same time frame (late May or early June) as we don't want to wait until July or August to cruise! Also, the fares seem to be cheaper the earlier you go (unless you go late in September).
And you really can't count on what the weather might be no matter what time of the season you go. It varies so much from week to week and day to day, that it really depends on the "luck of the draw"!
The one time we went in July (July 3 - 10 on the NCL Spirit to Alaska), we did not see any "salmon run" in Ketchikan or elsewhere. If seeing the "salmon run" is the only reason your brother and SIL want to go in July, I'd try to convince them otherwise!
We've gone in mid-September, early July, early June, late May and this year it was mid-June because work wouldn't allow my husband to get off any earlier.
Late May is our preferred time for Alaska! -Sandy-

This will be my third trip but I have only done May so it is very nice to see how it compares to the rest of the season. Very nice break down of the seasons.
I love the snow capped mountains and really have only considered September just to have a better chance of seeing bear.

Nancy, we did the Mendenhall Glacier/City Tour/Salmon Bake excursion on our first visit to Juneau and we did enjoy it.
This year we went whale watching with Captain Larry and enjoyed that very much, but if you want to do something really spectacular and memorable, consider the Taku Lodge Flight & Feast, which we did last year. We are considering it again for next year. http://www.takuglacierlodge.com/taku-lodge-glacier-flight.html

Linda, I would seriously consider the drive to Emerald Lake. It's not your typical mountain-type driving (at least not what we see around here). It's a great, relaxing drive with fantastic scenery!

Hey Jeff,
I've tried but they insist on trying a different month and my SIL was so sick last year with bronchitis that she missed a couple of days sightseeing because she stayed in her room so I'm trying to accomodate them and give in. Maybe when they see that it's prettier in May with all of the snow, they'll see things my way and go back in May next time.
