tjbarney wrote: Yeah a long time to wait but already busy planning!  We live in McAlester, OK.  Just wondering, has anyone figured out what they will be doing in each port?  We have already booked with Harv & Marv in Juneau!

I have been twice and Bruno more than that.

My recommendations (JMO)

Juneau - Whale watch. We did Captain Larry last year and loved it. I did the ship excursion with Dolphin (I think) the first year and it was good. I have thought about giving Harv & Marv a try this year.

Skagway - We did the train the first year and rented a car and drove to Emerald lake last year. Both are good but I did prefer the car trip. If you do the train, I would recommend the Train & Bus combo that goes to Emerald Lake.

Ketchikan - First year did the city tour and lumberjack show. It was nice and my son loved the show. Last year we did the sea plane with Southeast Aviation to Misty Fjords. This was absolutelly amazing. I know some accidents happened this year but I felt completely safe on this.

Victoria - I like Butchart Gardens. Depending on migration for early season an Orca tour would be nice.

Glacier Bay - Set back and find a good seat for one of the best sea days you could possible have. So relaxing...one of my favorite days.

Jeff

Thanks for the info!  In Skagway I was thinking we would probably rent a car and do the drive to Emerald Lake from what I have read, how long does it take to get there and back?  Of course not including stopping for pics etc.  In Ketchikan we thought we might like to go salmon/halibut fishing.  We had talked to a couple on a past caribbean cruise that fished in ketch and then had their catch cleaned and sent to their house for them.  We love to eat salmon so thought, hey, why not catch it ourselves instead of buying it in the store?!  lol, we'll see if that is what we do here or not though.  As for Victoria, I thought about the Orca tour but then if I get lucky and see orca's on the trip in junea it might be a waste of money?  I thought the zodiac tour looked cool though through prince of whales, anyone done this?  We are booked in cabin 10058 balcony starboard side.  I was told this would be the best side during this cruise but then I have also read that port is the best?

I think it is around 70 miles to Emerald Lake. We left around 9am and got back around 4PM. We stopped alot along the way and spent some time in Carcross. You can print out murrays guide and it will give you a mile marker account of what to see. Make sure you book your car with Avis early. They opened up for booking last year around October.

People did get lucky last year and saw some transient orca's in Juneau, but from what we were told this is rare. The only problem with doing an orca tour in Victoria is we do not get into port until 6PM. It was too late for the zodiac tour I wanted to do. You almost have to do the ship tour.

As far as which side of the ship, everyone has a different opinion. Now that I have had an AFT wake facing room, that would always be my first choice. I would then choose port side just because of Glacier Bay.

Thank you for the link!  So....should I switch to port side then?  I am a picture freak ;) so I want to have the best side to be able to take good pics throughout the cruise.

That is a tough question because I think everyone has a different view on it. If one of the Aft facing BA rooms were available I would go for that...I just did a quick check and looks they are gone. I would prefer Port but be happy with either.

Maybe brunolvr will offer up her opinion.

I'll agree with Jeff that port side is preferred for Glacier Bay viewing.  Especially since the viewing starts pretty early in the morning, it's nice to be able to stay on your balcony and enjoy the scenery.  If it gets too cold, you can keep poping back in your cabin to warm up!  It's a good day for breakfast in your cabin (and lunch).  We didn't want to leave our balcony until about noon.

On our first cruise to GB on the Star, we had a port-side  Mini-suite; the second time we had an AE aft, but some new friends invited us up to their Garden Villa for Glacier Bay viewing and we couldn't turn that down!  Last year on the Pearl we were in a Deluxe Owner's Suite that looked all over!

Here's the pictures on Glacier Bay day that we took from our port-side mini-suite:

Thank you so much!! Great Pictures!  I will call tomorrow morning and try to get a good port side balcony on the 10th.  Does it matter where on the port side, as in front, middle, back?  Also for the rest of the cruise do you still get to see land and maybe some of the ports from the balcony on the port side?

I guess I would prefer mid to aft. I don't know why other than close to all of the food.:big grin:

By Monday around 2PM we will be in the inside passage with land on both sides. So normally you have a good view from both sides.

Hi McAlester.....I live in Broken Arrow and went on the Pearl in May this year with Jeff and Suzanne and some Longhorns and a few others that we met on CC.  I debated and debated about which side would be the best (we were booked in an AF).  We ended up in 11636 which is the last aft port side mini suite and it was a wonderful location (especially for Glacier Bay)......BUT, my brother and sister-in-law were on the starboard side mid and they actually saw more whales and porpoises, etc. on their side (they would call us whenever they thought their view was better......it became sort of a contest between us!!!).  We did spend some time on their balcony and they spent some on ours so we got the best of both sides.  I really think that either side is just about as good as the other because you see different things on each day.  I would never hesitate to book 11636 again.  I thought it was a wonderful location, just a few steps away from the stairs and one floor up to the Garden Cafe (which was great for getting hot chocolate on Glacier Bay day after being on the balcony for hours).  It was also very convenient for getting iced tea or juice all during the day.  I wouldn't fret about it.  I fretted too much and discovered that you really can't go wrong with a balcony because on GB day, the ship turns completely around so that both sides get a great view.  I do think being close to the stairs was a really great place to be.  We have booked an AF aft (wake view) for our next Pearl cruise in July because Jeff has convinced me that this is the place to be for Alaska.  I think you'll be happy either way.

O.K.  Time to hear from the Longhorns!!!!

We had a port balcony on the Pearl last year for Glacier Bay, and it was absolutely fantastic!!!  Like others, we stayed in our room all morning, took pictures and stayed warm.  However, because our Sooner buddy Jeff had such a good experience with an AFT last year, next year we have booked an aft balcony on the Pearl.  (Longhorns taking advice from a Sooner - who'd of thunk it!!!)

The big reason for booking a port or aft is the park ranger gives a presentation over the loud speaker and the room televions at each of the major glaciers and the port side usually is the side that is facing the glaciers during the presentation.  Then the ship is turned for the starboard side to view.  However, the starboard side never misses the gorgeous view.

Talking about port and starboard, I have to tell a story.  I was somewhat shocked the other night when my oldest son (36 years old) called to ask which is the port and which is starboard side of a ship.  I guess an honest question considering he's never been in the Navy or cruised; however, he does own a motorized bass boat and has entered many fishing tournaments.  :dangit:  And no, Jeff, he is not our son who is a Longhorn!!!!

Do you think I should be concerned about which son is going to pick my retirement home?!?!?!

HOOK EM HORNS!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Sandy gave me a heads up to come to this site to talk about our upcoming Pearl cruise.  Thanks Sandy.

There are 5 of us going on your trip.  Me, my husband Frank, my dad Tony, my sister Bobby Jean and her husband Ray.  We all went to Alaska in 2005 on Star.  Both times we booked starboard AF cabins.  We are so looking forward to this cruise.

We live in Florida, near Orlando as does my dad.  My sister and brother-in-law now live near Austin Tx, but are moving to Huntsville, AL in January.

I have talked to a few of you on the other board.  We still haven't made our hotel reservations for Seattle.  We are thinking of  the Residence Inn.   Does anyone have any suggestions?  We don't want to spend a fortune for a hotel as we are going to Las Vegas after our cruise.

Jeff, although I don't know you, I voted for your to be the leader for the Meet N Greet.  That too should be fun.

Talk to you all soon.

Katie

Hi Katie:

Welcome to CTT and another big thanks to Sandy. We are still along ways off but I am starting to get excited with all the people joining up. We should have a great M&G.

Thanks for throwing your vote for me as the leader. My friends set me up good. I prefer stirring the pot myself and having secret votes.:lmao1:

Hotels in Seattle, especially downtown, can be exspensive. What I have done the past two years is found the best deal I could get and booked a refundable room. When it got closer I used Priceline & Hotwire to book a room and then cancelled my backup.

I stayed at the Airport DoubleTree once and the Hilton downtown the other time.

I think I got the Doubletree for around $60 when the room was going for $130 through hotwire.

I got the Hilton for around $90 and the room was going for around $170.

Take Care,

Jeff

Hello from the far west CA :proud::proud:

We are torn about what to do in Junea.  We are thinking of the Mendenhall Glacier/City Tour or Whale Watching.  We have been whale watching a couple of times up in Oregon during the migration.  DH says we have already cried "There be whales".   Any advice on if the whale watching would be more intense up there.

We are thinking about the train ride in S.  Just deciding on whether to add on on bus ride to emerald lake.

In K. we will probably just wander around and visit the town.

Vic.  we will most likely do the gardens.  My friend just went up and they said the pub tour was the best.  Only problem for us DH is not 21.

As far as Seattle. I also investigated prices of hotels and then went to priceline.  Got a 3 star in downtown for 75 a night.  Feeling pretty lucky.  could not get that price for 3 days before the cruise only 2.  So, got one for after the cruise also, we just have to see the Museum of Flight. DH's history aviation buff.  Yes, we have seen flight musems in all areas we visited. :sleepy::sleepy::sleepy::sleepy::sleepy:.  For DS and myself we find a corner and a good book.

Since my nomination to head up the M&G on CC we have had a lot of seasoned cruiser's join up. If someone else would prefer to do this, I will be happy to go back into my usual role of being the instigator. If not, then I am more than happy to take care of things.
I just have to figure out :brightidea: on how to handle the CC part of it since this ADPeterson character went and got himself banned.

If you & Randie keep building my image up, then I will be doomed for failure.

I prefer it when people have low expectations of me, then I have a chance to pleasantly surprise them.

Do you mind me asking what 3 star came up for $75? I have checked hotwire and nothing good yet. I did not have any luck with priceline last year until March.

This year we are going to need 3 to 5 rooms for Friday & Saturday night. I need to get busy soon and at least book some refundable rooms.

Wow, Jeff!!!  I'm impressed!  Did you have to take your shoes off to do this?!

Jeff will make the best coordinator, Y'all!!!!  He is lots of fun!!!!:breakdancer:

Jeff, my brother can be somewhat of a bother, but he is still my brother! His name is Reg and his wife is Joyce.

No problem Jeff,

The hotel name is Renaissance Seattle Hotel.  I was surprised to actually get it at this price.  I tried to get another night last week and could not get that price for anything.  So, I had to settle for a 2 1/2 star for the Sunday night we get back.
