New York experts!!  I need help!  Multiple questions I need to get answers to before we leave in 10 days :big grin:.

1.  Car service or taxi from our JFK area hotel to the pier?  If a car service, any recommendations?

2.  How about post-cruise?  We're staying at the Embassy Suites post-cruise for one night (thanks, Shoreguy!!).  Do we want a taxi or a car service to get from the pier to that hotel?

3.  I'm scared to death about finding my way around NYC.  We want to do some of the typical sight-seeing type things on Sunday -- Rockefeller Center, Empire State building, probably Times Square.  Should we take the subway, or a taxi, or one of the hop-on, hop-off bus tours.  Neither of us have ever been to NYC before, and I have visions of getting lost somewhere and never being found again...:help:

4.  Monday morning we're planning on going to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.  Is it worth is to get the pass that goes inside the base of the Statue of Liberty?  Again, how to we get from the hotel to where the boat leaves from.  I realize it will be Monday morning, and would like to avoid as much congestion as possible.

Any other suggestions that would improve our short stay?  Other sites we should be stopping at?  Any restaurant suggestions -- particularly for Sunday afternoon/evening?

We always take a taxi to / from pier, to /from  Mahattan Hotels.

Hop on Hop off bus works for us.

Also the double decker bus night tour is worth a look.

Always dine at the Stage Deli :big grin:

Ferry Service from New York: Purchase round-trip ferry tickets at Castle Clinton National Monument in Lower Manhattan. Ferries from New York operate on a loop, stopping first at Liberty Island and then at Ellis Island before returning to Battery Park, New York.

From your Hotel you can walk or take a short cab ride

You can not get lost - get a map or print key one pagers from Google. Mid town NYC is a grid. Ave run north south (short blocks), St. east west (long blocks).  Low number ave south. Low number st. east.

Empire State 34th and 5th Ave

Times Square 49th and 7th

Rock Center 49th and 5th

Once you are in midtown you can walk to them all.

You can spend ~20 to have a cab drop you in midtown or the hotel staff can get you on the right subway for ~4

I agree with Cappy......a lunch at The Stage Deli is a must!  It's on 7th Ave at around 53-54th, I think.

Shop Macy's if you have time!  It's so huge, you won't beleive it.  It's on 34th St, I think....in Herald Square.  It's worth the trip.  Buses and subway stops right there.

New York is a walking city-----put some comfy shoes on and get out and walk!
If we are going too far to walk, we always take the subway or the bus. We never take a cab while we are in the city.

A taxi to/from airport is fine....or a car service. We usually use "Carmel" car service, or "Dial 7".....both are reliable and we've never had trouble with either of those companies.

One of the hop on/off buses is a great way to get "the lay of the land" so to speak. I'd recommend doing that first and then you'll know where things are.

Have a great time-----NY is a great city!!

That still exists

Speaking of shopping better then Macys - Century 21 3 blocks from the Embassy Suites. They run shopping tours from the UK just to take advantage of the bargains on top shelf fashions.

LOL.   That's ain't Macy's.   The private guide we hired to take us around NYC one day took us there.   The savings on my wife's shopping almost saved what the guide cost over buying elsewhere.

Yes, the private guide cost a good deal, but not only did we save when shopping, we saw more of NYC in one day than we possibly could have seen in three or four on our own.

Follow up questions:  If we're out late enough Sunday evening that it 's dark, are we safe to take the subway and walk back to our hotel (which looks like it's a bit of a walk), or will we need to plan on a taxi for that?

Shoreguy -- what's the going rate for tipping the concierge and/or the taxi driver?

We have walked all over the city after dark, ( the only time to go to Times Square )

and never had a problem, in fact never felt uncomfortable.  Then again I don't look like a tourist :big grin:

We're familiar with the city, so we never hesitiate to take the bus or subway. But, since it's your first time.....if you are more than a block from a bus stop or subway station, I would probably take a cab after dark.
During the day, don't hesitate to take mass transpo...it's fun and cheap and fast.

As in any big city, be aware of your surroundings. Wear your purse across your chest and hang on to it at all times, especially on a crowded street or subway.
