I need some advice for Barcelona and Venice. I'm compiling "short forms" now, to find a hotel and things to do.
Has anyone booked hotels in Europe online before? How did you make out? Were they what you expected or paid for?

| Sheila I am thinking the same thing at the moment. I can book any hotel in the US/Canada quite handily with priceline and all the rest, but I do not even know where to begin for Europe. I am thinking that I may let the cruisline book us pre cruise, only because others on my roll call have said they are finding hotels booked up already, For Sept 07? That is crazy!

| Sheila, I posted some links in the Europe forum about hotels. See if any of those are what you need. Some of them also have recommendations for things to do in several cities.

I've read tons of posts re people booking their own hotel, and excursions. And they all seem to fair really well. And then there's the folks that book drivers online from referrals of other posters ... now is that not a leap of faith?? Not only could the poster be a nut bar, but so could that so called great driver in Istanbul!!
My sister did this for her British Isle cruise, and did well. I hate the thoughts of the booking getting lost in translation! And I cringe to think that I'd get us in a sleezy part of town, just cause I thought it would be neat to live like the locals.
Have you seen the price of most of these hotels?? OMG how do people afford $495. pp per night and up?????? There's no way I'm paying that. I don't mind$250. per night.
Will try those links Deb.

| Right now the Euro is equal to 0.7823 on the U.S. Dollar and 1.42695 on the Canadian Dollar.

Well, sadly I must comment that if the price is in Euros, then you can almost double it as the exchange rate is terrible for us here in the US the last couple or more years. British Pounds makes it even worse. With the VAT they add to all hotels rooms over there, it really does make the price outragious for what you will receive.
We spent about $400 U.S. per night, actually it was a bit higher than that when we spent the week end in London post cruise last August.
Admittedly, it was at the Rubens directly across from Buckingham Palace, but it really was worth every penny. We had a suite that was two levels, bedroom upstairs with a very large bath and desk area (complete with all office supplies). Downstairs was a sunken living room with plenty of room for ourselves and friends that were also staying at the hotel and we could stretch out and relax in. I must admit, the TV that popped out of the upholstered type trunk at the end of the bed with the push of a bottom was really nice.
This is a small boutique hotel, but the service was top of the line and the hotel itself was charming. We even saw Prince Charles as he drove by in his royal car (of coarse he wasn't driving but in the back seat) on his way to a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Personally, if I was only going to spend one week end in London, I would try for a great room with a view. We visited our friends regular room and it was little more than a large closet.
You only live once, might as well live right. LOL

I booked the B&B Belgravia near Victoria Station. It's furnished with Ikea and I don't know if that's such a good thing. I paid just over $200 per night. (sigh)
I see GPS and I just double it to get the US rate. What a shame. Wasn't like this in the 60's! (grin)

It wasn't like that when I was there in the 80's either. If I remember correctly, the USD was worth 2 of the British pound back then.

Why aren't they on the Euro? Lucky for us Istanbul wasn't on the Euro, so we fared a little better there. We were WEALTHY when when the Lira was still around. Poor US dollar.
Go to China - they love our dollar!

Re: Barcelona Hotels Check out Las Ramblas Hotel on Ramblas 10 minutes from Ferry port 20 minutes from airport. Small boutique type hotel. Very comfortable!
