She has seen a little bit but her 30 year old son has never set foot there.

Great suggestions ladies but I need more specifics such as restaurant names, shopping venues - I need the nitty gritty.

I have a feeling you will have to wait for Chrissy and Jim to give you some ideas.....I have always wanted to go in a horse drawn carriage

I'm a newby to the NYC area, but here are a few of the things I've treasured:
(1) Going to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island -- Ellis Island doesn't sound like much, but I can't believe how much I enjoyed it! I've heard others say the same.
(2) Times Square at night -- yeah, it's a nut house, but it's something to see, once in your life
(3) Take in a play
Dining: Ruby Foo's on Broadway (and 47th?) for Asian fusion, Akdeniz for Turkish

I can't help you Fil, but you might want to put out the information that your son likes photography.........maybe there is a great place to take pictures.
Also might want to mention that you are thinking of early September.....

1) As posted the ferry from Battery Park to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.
2) For Karl the Metropolitan Museum of Art - great photo ops
3) Top of the Rock or Empire State
4) The hole that was once the WTC - brings reality to a terrible day - I climb out of it every day.
5) Find a great restaurant. shows, or just enjoy the streets around Times Square.

Sounds super Jim. Is Karl allowed to take photos at the Museum ?
In Time Square please suggest a restaurant for dinner on Tuesday night.
Merci

Both of the places I mentioned are very near Times Square. There's also the Roxy Deli, a very expensive NY deli/restaurant, but their cheese blintzes are ~to die for~!!! I crave them.

I agree with the others - Ground Zero is a must see. It is very humbling and emotional to be there, but every American should visit this site. The church across the street should be visited as well.
The Stage Deli should not be missed.
The Jersey Boys!!
Funny you started this thread. I was talking to a good friend Friday night, and he is taking a business trip to NYC in Mid -Oct. and I will prolly go with. We were discussing all the things we could cram into 2 days, before we head to Boston for a conference.

I have been trying to line up some things to do myself, having never been there. A friend of mine who lives in DC area has taken trips up there and he recommends a
bus tour from Essex House, xcellant
Essex House overlooks Central Park and walking distance to Tavern on the Green

Fil if you do go to Ground Zero you could head down to South Street Seaport
Plenty of stores and places to eat. When I worked down there I would walk it but it would be a short cab ride.Gosh I still can't believe I was in those buildings everyday.
Anyway the Seaport is a nice place .Beautiful views .In fact my husband proposed to me there

Another good deal is the Hop On Hop Off bus. Get a 2 day all routes pass and you can get a nice overview of the city including a really nice night tour (goes over to Brooklyn so you can see the nighttime skyline). http://www.coachusa.com/newyorksightseeing/
Other places:
http://www.nycvisit.com/ convention and visitors bureau If trip is later, they have a nice free booklet you can order (or pick up at their site near Times Square)
http://www.playbill.com for shows (Christmas Show at Radio City starts 11/2 I think).

Fil so much to do and see .I was going to say since you are downtown a trip to Little Italy and Chinatown would be good. If you went to Southstreet and didn't eat there just shopped maybe lunch or have a drink or two then head down Have dinner in Chinatown and dessert in Little Italy .Some espresso and a few pastries YUMMY.
Wear comfortable shoes and you will be fine .Once you are down there you are much better walking around .The traffic is bad.I would tell you to shop on Canal Street but it may be a bit much If you saw Canal street you would know what I am talking about.
Whatever you decide to do I know you will have a great time.Enjoy
