All set to enjoy the beautiful Cane Garden Bay beach in 2 weeks, just found out they switched the port for Grand Turk.  So did we trade up or down???
I have been to Tortola, CGB.  Beautiful beach and cheap dranks.  Lovely island.  Short stay.  Should I be pissed, or grateful?

Hard to say..........I've been to Tortola once before, but never to Grand Turk.  I hear the Turks and Caicos are really nice & have gret beaches, so I bet you'll be OK.
Please let us know when you get back what you think!!

Tortola was lovely, but we were there from 7 am to 1 pm only.  GT is from 1 pm to 7 pm - same duration but better drankin hours.
Gotta do some research.  ;)

There's not a whole lot at Grand Turk, other than the cruise-line built port area (complete with Margaritaville :drink:).  The beach right at the pier is pretty rocky (beach itself is okay, but lots of uneven rocks in the water).  There are plenty of water activities such as snorkeling, though.

I'd say you'd have been better off going to Tortola, but Grand Turk isn't bad.

Tortola is nice, we really enjoyed it there but I would welcome going to Grand Turk as it costs a fortune to fly there. We have thought several times to spend a week (great snorkeling/diving) in Turks and Caicos but each time I have looked into the air it was absolutely insane. From what I read on the letter Carnival sent there is some engine problems which make top speed impossible. So better to have a port switch now then find out at the last minute that you can't get anywhere. I remember NCL swiched out st. thomas for san juan and cut the samana stop way down in time for the April cruise out of NYC. I would rather have Grand Turk over San Juan any day!

oh yeah also if you like body surfing/surfing etc I know they have a flow rider there (GT) although it probably will be crowded with the cruise ship in port but never know, it is something different.

I agree with Rich and Ann -- Grand Turk is a great port for water activities. Some of the best reef snorkeling we've ever done! The best snorkeling is reached by boat, not from shore, so if this floats your boat be sure to book a snorkeling excursion.

Sorry to hear about the port changes. CGB was a beautiful place to while away a few hours last October. A few of us from S&S (whatever number it was) spent some time there.

Remember, Google is your friend! Maybe you can find something of interest on Grand Turk or just find a good bar with good beer. ;)

Just back from Caicos, never been to Grand Turk. T&C is awesome.
Grand Turk is not as nice as Provo, but has shopping and a Margaritaville. It is being built up for the cruise ship business.
I didn't find it anymore expensive than Canada, but yes flights are costly!

I just found out about the change for our 8/13 cruise on the Miracle.

I was really looking forward to going back over to the Virgin Gorda Baths.  Although, being able to walk off the ship to the pool or the beach sounds great too!  Is there a charge to go to the pool or to the beach?  It does not look like it but I am not sure.

Alright, guys, now this is getting scary.
The biggest problem with Tortola is you eat up half the day going to-from the beach, so I am leaning towards just kicking with some brewskis right at Margaritaville.

That is good :big grin:

We are thinking about renting a cabana there.

From what I'm reading about the cabana rental, if you're thinking about it and there's still one available -- check under your sailing's shore excursions -- you'd better go ahead and book it NOW. They tend to get snatched up early.

K, I have heard of these things (cabanas), and seen pics, but I still don't get it.  What exactly is the draw?  My preconception is that they are just little rooms where you can hang out, which is definitely not what I want to be doing.
Can somebody set me straight?  Can I volunteer to be somebody's cabana boy and save some cash?  Does my CBG card get me a discount?
:big grin:

We are thinking about them because we will have our kids with us.  Our DD burns really easily even though we use heavy sunblock and she also has one of those swim shirts.  We thought that if we had a shaded and cooler area for her to be out of the sun for some breaks in the day, we could have a longer time out by the pool or at the beach and would not have to return to the ship so soon.

Having a private, fresh water shower is also nice.  The kids could get cleaned up and limit the number of people needing the shower when we were getting ready for dinner.

We would only consider it if the price was reasonable.

I'm totally with what you're saying. All someone has to do is say "beach" to me and I start turning red. I limit my exposure by trying to go out early in the morning, and even then lathered with SPF 1000 sunblock and wearing a swim shirt.

Have you looked at http://www.coolibar.com for sun-protective clothing? That's where I got my swim shirt, and I've got a shawl from them that I drape over my legs. (Yeah, I'm just a regular vision of beauty when I go to the beach. )

Good luck getting a cabana!

scott, you are going to love grand turk, it's beautiful.  i like it very much, as you know.

my problem is NOT that we are going "there" per se.  it's that it'll be (with my destiny sailing in november, us going there (almost -- a one cruise interruption without it, lol) 4x in a row.  it's a totally different issue for me.  but as i told you the other night, you are gonna love it.

the cabanas @ margaritaville finally appear to be finished, but you won't need them.  the ship is 2 steps away, lol.  and unlike HMC, they are at the pool, not the beach.  they are steps away from the lounge chairs too, so no real seclusion or privacy.

the flow rider is new.  i linked you by email and put the link in the fu thread showing UG riding it.

i was really looking forward to the different port of tortola.  i am disappointed i won't be going to CGB.  i was really looking forward to it, but whacha gonna do, right?  it isn't the first time they did this to one of my sailings, and i am sure it won't be the last, lol.  i usually cld care less, but in this case, i wld have preferred any port to grand turk only b/c of our RECENT (key -- if these trips were years apart no biggie)frequency there.

I can understand that. I'm beginning to feel the same way about St. Thomas. Seems like every cruise I've taken goes there. We're taking a different tack in August -- go straight to the jeweler (only one shop!) and up Paradise Point for Bushwhackers. That's it. We'll see how that works out, and maybe repeat for December. :big grin:

Thanks, sweetheart.  We missed you around here lately:(.  I bet I will like it, plus being there in the afternoon will allow me to have a drank or two and not be worthless by the afternoon. :vomit:

Maybe I can buy you a drink at Margaritaville to thank you
