rec'd an email over the w'end:

beginning 6/29, the legend will offer open seating in the main dining room, in addition to the 6 and 8:15 p.m. traditional seating.

reservations are not required, but you may call ahead from your stateroom to request specific dining times for that night.

if you want to try the open seating, call to switch 2 weeks prior to sailing.  the email also states that you may switch once onboard.

does anyone know if other ships will be testing this format?

i am currently booked on miracle, destiny and legend, but have only rec'd this letter in reference to my legend sailing.

I'm not curently booked (as you already know t) so this is news to me. To be honest, I'm not really sure what to think about it.

Interesting. I've done the traditional dining on all of my cruises but one. That was on Princess. We were three couples who did their anytime dining, or whatever they call it these days, and always ate together. I actually liked it! That's just me though. I like having choices especially on port days.

That's kind of interesting Deb. We have never once gone to the Dining Room on Port days, on any cruise, mainly because we like the flexability that the alternate dining has to offer on those days. I don't know if this would change our ways any, but it sure would offer another option.

me too! on sea days i even feel a bit rushed b/c we always request early seating so the kids don't miss too many evening activities with camp carnival.  on port days, it's even worse.

i'm looking forward to trying this.

I found some info on Cruise Diva's site:

Miami, May 9 -- Carnival Cruise Lines will begin testing a new flexible dining option with the Carnival Legend’s June 29, 2008, departure that will enable guests to choose an open seating option for dinner. Guests who opt for flexible dining can dine at whatever time they wish between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. nightly in the ship’s main restaurant.

The new flexible dining pilot program aboard Carnival Legend will in no way replace Carnival’s popular classic dining system which provides a choice of either main or late seating. Under classic dining, guests dine at the same table with service from the same wait staff throughout the full voyage. Guests will be asked to designate either flexible/open seating or classic, assigned seating prior to departure and their choice will be in effect for the full cruise.

The new open seating dining initiative is the latest addition to Carnival’s Total Choice Dining and designed to provide guests with additional flexibility in their dinnertime options. Carnival will begin contacting guests sailing on the Carnival Legend’s June 29 departure and beyond to advise of the new dining initiative beginning later this month.

I really like the idea, unless you have a big group, then the wait can be long - at least on Princess.  With 2-4 it works fantastic.

Now that the entire plan has been released, I don't think it is a bad idea at all. Best of both worlds actually.

It really is. Too bad you can't do both on the same cruise, but it works well for a lot of people.

i was thinking about that too...thinking it wld be great to do traditional dining some nights, and open seating others.  but, i cld see how that cld become very difficult for the food service crew.

what will they do if nearly everyone chooses to try the option leaving the other dining room empty, save for a couple of tables? eek

I suspect they will limit the number of people who can choose each option. If they don't get their request in soon enough, they might get stuck with the other option.

Exactly.  That's how Princess does it and they've had both options for quite some time.

when we did princess the trick was to book traditional and then make your mind up when on board, more people wanted traditional so they get waitisted and they look for people to try anytime so it is easy to change that way but not the other from anytime to traditional.
