Carnival Corporation & plc to Voluntarily Rescind Fuel Supplement for Guests Booked Prior to November 7, 2007
Monday March 31, 6:01 pm ET
MIAMI, March 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK) has announced a voluntary refund of the company's fuel supplement for applicable U.S. bookings that were made prior to November 7, 2007, under an agreement with the Florida Attorney General's Office.
The fuel supplement, announced November 7, 2007, was applied to all U.S. bookings for voyages departing on or after February 1, 2008, regardless of when the booking was made, for cruises on the Carnival Corporation & plc brands Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and The Yachts of Seabourn. However, this effective date allowed guests already booked at the time of the announcement the opportunity to cancel and receive a full refund.
The company will now refund the fuel supplement for those guests who were already booked at the time the supplement was announced. Refunds for affected guests will be implemented based on cruise departure date according to the following schedule:
-- For cruises departing on or prior to April 4, 2008, guests will
receive a refund in the same form they used to purchase their cruise.
-- For cruises departing from April 5, 2008 through June 23, 2008, guests
will receive an on-board credit.
-- For cruises departing on or after June 24, 2008, guests' bookings will
be adjusted to remove the supplement.
The fuel supplement remains in effect for all bookings made on or after November 7, 2007. The $5 per person per day fuel supplement applies only to the first and second guests in a stateroom and will not exceed $70 per person per voyage. Also, at the time the fuel supplement was announced, travel agents whose clients had existing reservations were offered $10 per booking in administrative compensation for notifying those clients of the supplement. Those travel agents will still receive the $10 per booking.

That should make a few people happy. Others won't be satisfied at all.
Honestly though, it had to have taken more time and energy to protest this in the first place than it was worth.

| This will cover everyone who booked before they announced the surcharge. Anyone who booked after this date knew about it, and if they weren't happy, they had the option not to book.

It is costing Carnival millions for this refund. Can someone say - the cost of cruising will now be increased for everyone..... I can see it now. Dumb chits who cry to "daddy gov" over a measly $5 per day "it's the principal". Now we will all pay dearly..... just like we did with the port charges.

That's the point I was trying to get across to the morons over on the RCCL forum at CC.
But, NOOOOOOO......they had to complain to the Florida AG and now RCCL is giving the $35 refund (yeah, that $35 will really make or break your cruise, I'm sure). Next time they want to book a cruise, they'll be complaining about the price increase.
DUH!!!!!!!!

Well, looks like we'll be getting our $100 back. Big F'ing deal!
I'd rather have them keep their little surcharge [which seems practical]
and keep the cost of my future cruise down!!
Denise, happy packing and happy cruising. It's nice to not bring any formalwear
on this cruise -- I seriously don't know how I'd fit it. Seems like I have enough
t-shirts and shorts and stuff to last a month.

I had to laugh at those folks Denise. They may have won a moral victory to get their five bucks a day back but if anyone thinks for a minute that the cruise lines are going to lose on this refund then I have some nice high and dry land in the southwest coast of Florida to sell them. You can bet that the bar prices changed almost over night along with the gift shop items and other on board expenses. What's also funny is that those same losers that were posting about the fuel surcharge haven't been back since. They were there to stir the pot and have now moved on. Jaxon was the worst along with that loser CruisinMike. Those were JC's buddies!!!!!
I was over reading the latest thread on the Carnival board about the surcharge refund. I really wonder about some of those folks over there. Kind of scary to think that they roam the streets free!!!!!

Oh yeah, CruisinMike was an asshole, for sure. And don't forget about my good buddy, MakinGold. He/she was a real gem, too! MakinGold was the expert on everything and always had to have the last word.........

finucane, pmshirl, floridagal###, and a few others. I remember saying over and over that the cruiselines handled it bad, but they insisted that they illegally instituted the surcharge. Many of them said that RCI had committed a crime. It was absolutely silly. But CrusinMike is my favorite buddy, he called me a troll in almost every single post and CC did nothing about it. Not that I cared, but it was a classic example of the double standard.

| It will be interesting to watch the responses when cruise prices go up to make up for the $40 million shortfall.

Are they refunding the money or giving you an OBC?

i have small balances due on both cabins. when i talked to my guy at ccl last night he said he expected that they wld adjust my invoice for final payment to deduct the $80 off each cabin.

Ahh...makes sense with an outstanding balance. Wonder how they are handling it for those who are paid in full.

yeah, except i have been wanting to make final payment for awhile, and held off when the news of royal/celebrity broke. i have been watching the fighting, following the threads which have recounted ccl's attys' position.
i figured i wldn't do anything until the dust settled. and now they have so many sailings to deal with before july, that i do not know how long it might take. i don't want to pay though until the invoice is corrected. just more room for error if i do (even if i pay deducting the 80 off each booking myself).
i think for those who have sailed, they are cutting checks. for those who have paid in full, they are refunding via the method of payment used. and, for those whose sailing are imminent, they are providing OBC.
don't hold me to this though...i read it on a message board, and well, you know how that goes...

Here's what they said on the press release:
-- For cruises departing on or prior to April 4, 2008, guests will
receive a refund in the same form they used to purchase their cruise.
-- For cruises departing from April 5, 2008 through June 23, 2008, guests
will receive an on-board credit.
-- For cruises departing on or after June 24, 2008, guests' bookings will
be adjusted to remove the supplement.

This is how they are handling any reimbursements: (again IF you booked before Nov 7, 2007)
- For cruises departing on or prior to April 4, 2008, guests will
receive a refund in the same form they used to purchase their cruise.
-- For cruises departing from April 5, 2008 through June 23, 2008, guests
will receive an on-board credit.
-- For cruises departing on or after June 24, 2008, guests' bookings will
be adjusted to remove the supplement.

I did not write the SG, either, but am getting a $50 refund on my upcoming cruise on Friday. Since the final payment was made, it will be in the form of an OBC. (this is on RCCL)

Enjoy that cruise. Sounds very nice. I am booked on the Brilliance for next June out of Barcelona for twelve nights. Can't wait. Will be interested in your comments on the Brilliance. Those Radiance class ships are some of the best looking ships sailing today IMHO.

Is this the cruise you had scheduled for last summer but had to cancel? We did the 7-nt Med on Splendour in Oct and really enjoyed it-----you will have a blast!
This will be my 5th time (I think) on Brilliance. I love this ship. I agree with you that the Radiance class ships are just lovely. I love all that floor-to-ceiling glass windows and the open, airy feel of the public rooms. The layout is easy to find your way around.....even my 76-yr old mother doesn't get lost on Brilliance!!!
